i'll had the tv component when it gets finalized

the Province is offering a 40th anniversary season tribute book for 20 bucks

you can order it online, too

global tv had a full hour season re-cap post riot

but they focussed on the good, not great , season our squad had

certainly one of the best ever in every category, but everyone feels one game short of the prize

and that's from everyone starting with franco and all thru the dressing room

we have a real chance at bieksa staying, and ehroff will get a premium offer ,

but no one is ever getting brian campbell money again

who are your fave free agent prospects?

lotsa talk here about eric cole being a perfect example of what the Nuckleheads need

but he's played in the east his whole career and some of those types never get over the bitching about extra travel miles and days

everyone is seeing smyth with the oil or even flames next year

we would give team canada's spring leader in games played a real shot at a Cup before he's done

tell smyth to forget mentoring those kids on the other side of the rockies

come to the west coast as a gun slinger mercenary for a transparent last chance

anyone hate the idea of ryan on the wing with either the twins or kesler ?

these are the best bet for us to take over a rival barn during warm-up and anthems

so many of those season ticket holders get out of town for the holidays, they seem even easier tickets for us to get our hands a few

and the boys are home for christmas, playing the 23rd n 26th at Rogers

this sunny set will grab a few golfers desparate for warm golf

You know, this year I just might try to. Haven't been to a Canucks/Flames game at the 'dome since 2007 - and I've had a personal boycott and vendetta against the Flames since 2008. But, they're showing signs of change now and they've finally shaken up their gay core group, so I may relax on my laurels this season and look into seeing a game or two. No promises though....

Boys, we lost Barry Wilkins today, the first ever goal scorer in Canucks NHL history. Only 64 years old, died of lung cancer. I believe he was at the opening ceremony of the Canucks first game last season when they honoured the 1970 originals....

Sad, but he'll always have a place in our hearts and history. He even has a spot on my ipod, in a line from that Kyprios Canuck playoff song:

"We'll be going in first like Barry Wilkins"

RIP Barry

Quote:

VANCOUVER -- Barry Wilkins, who scored the first franchise goal for the Vancouver Canucks, has passed away of lung cancer at age 64.

Wilkins spent five seasons with the Canucks, scoring the team's first goal on Oct. 9, 1970.

The Toronto native broke into the league with Boston during the 1966-'67 season, but played just eight games with the Bruins through three seasons.

Wilkins moved to Vancouver for the 1970-'71 season before being traded in 1974 to Pittsburgh for two seasons.

"We are saddened by the recent news and on behalf of the entire Vancouver Canucks organization, I would like to extend my sincere sympathies to Barry's family," Canucks general manager Mike Gillis said in a statement.

The five-foot-11, 190-pound blue-liner had 27 goals and 125 assists in 398 career NHL games.

He also spent one season with Edmonton in the WHA, and later retired in the AHL in '79.

Also - good to see Bieksa re-signed, if a little rich (not much of a hometown discount there) and with another NTC - but he's a big part of the team and its good to see we have him back.

Pretty much shut the door on bringing Ehrhoff back though - apparantly the Canucks offered him the exact same contract as Bieksa's but 'Hoff turned it down. Looks like he knows he could fetch upwards of 5 mil a season on the open market. He had a good two years here, hopefully his offensive presence can be replaced ether by someone in the organization, or on July 1, but d-men with skills like that don't grow on trees.

Could be a huge hole on our PP if both Ehrhoff and Salo don't come back...

And, for better or for worse, Lapierre will be back too...

GIANTSFAN 06-28-2011 09:54 PM

Not sure who Gillis thinks is going to take the place of Ehrhoff, a solid #2 or #3 dman. You can never have enough depth on the backend, & the Nucks just took a huge hit. Ehrhoff was a solid player, & Bieksa goes back to his usual mixed play, the Nucks will be relying on Luongo a lot. Gillis has made some huge mistakes like signing Luongo to that stupid NT deal, the Sundin fiasco, the Ballard for Grabner & a pick, & now not bringing back arguably their 2nd best dman. Retaining Lapierre is also a stupid move for a guy who had 12 pts & is an embarrassment around the league. For some reason, he got GM of the year. I guess they felt sorry for him & for not winning the Cup so they gave him this award. Honestly, he's got a lot of learning to do because the way he's going, this team isn't gonna win anything with Gillis running the show.

FurnaceFace 06-28-2011 11:46 PM

I expect to see Kevin Connauton make it to some games this year, a young guy Ian Saab looks good, maybe we sign someone new to shore up the d. hopefully get a fighter to help out Rick Rypien, definately need to get rid of tanner glass otherwise he needs to play meaner. glad errorhoof is gone, not enough size to him. gimme more size and toughness.

Then you better follow another team because Gillis has made it clear that they are modeling themselves after the Wings with their pp as their enforcer.

GIANTSFAN 06-29-2011 06:27 PM

The Vancouver Giants selected goaltender Jonathan Iilahti with the 39th pick in the 2011 CHL Import Draft. The 19 year old from Vaasa, Finland played last season for the Espoo Jr. Blues. The Vancouver Canucks selected him in the 6th round, 175th overall in the 2010 NHL Entry Draft.

Hopefully he's better than the last Giants import goalie, Marek Schwarz. :B)

Can't be any worse. It'll be interesting to see if he steals the job away from Jensen.

NOOOOOoooooooooooooh :B)

but wait, there is no pp on a fight minute fighting major. i want to see a more aggressive road team, anyway you have it.

stevecanuck16 06-29-2011 07:36 PM

I'm back! I usually like to avoid hockey media for awhile after the end of a season, and this season more so than others. But thanks to our short off-season, I've been dragged back in by the draft and pending free agency, so I thought I'd share my thoughts on both.

As the disappointment of Game 7 has slowly faded, it has dawned on me how impressive last season was and why we have every reason to be optimistic. The core of the team will stay intact. There is room to improve the team, especially given the increase in salary cap. The team has experienced the highest highs, and lowest lows, and hockey history is littered with teams who had to lose big before they could win it all. We've seen firsthand what it takes to win the Cup, and I don't think any of the Canucks have given up that dream.

First off, I was very pleased with the draft. I can't say I've seen much of Nicklas Jensen's play, but I hope he brings Jannik Hansen's Danish work ethic. Most of the stuff I read had Jensen ranked a lot higher than 29th, so I think we got good value for a low-end pick. He's playing for Denmark in the World Juniors in Canada's pool, so we should get a good look at him come January.

Don't know too much about the later picks, but they have some promising attributes. Notable is Pathrik Westerholm, who was actually eligible last year along with twin Ponthus. From what I've read, both twins will be attending our camp, and I don't think I need to point out why the prospect of another set of cycling Swedish twins is exciting.

As for our moves so far, I'm satisfied. I wasn't expecting Ehrhoff back, as he's definitely going to chase the money. I really hope Keith Ballard can step up and fill some of that role. I believe we are going to re-sign Salo at a cheaper rate, and we have Rome and Alberts signed as depth guys, so there's still a spot open at #6. I suppose Tanev might get a shot there, but if we want a veteran presence I'd fully support the return of Ed Jovanovski on a hometown, Cup-run discount.

Up front, there are holes on Kesler's wing (with Raymond out and assuming we don't re-sign Higgins), on the third line wing (assuming we don't re-sign Torres), and one on the 4th line wing (assuming Glass, Tambellini, etc aren't re-signed). Hodgson is a candidate for all positions, but I think he's on the outside looking in initially. I'd love for them to find a real playmaking winger for Kesler. For that 4th line spot, I would love to sign Mike Rupp. He's the closest thing to a "Shawn Thornton" type, meaning a tough guy who can also contribute. Unfortunately, their kind is few and far between. I'd throw a million at Rupp, easily.

canuckfan 06-29-2011 09:04 PM

Rupp is a guy I was thinking about too, Steve - good to see you back, btw.

There's a couple other guys out there I think the Canucks should take a hard look at.

For that second line, I'd rather we try to find some more size and toughness than skill, but if we want more of the latter, maybe a guy like Ville Leino would be a good option. Michael Ryder could be had a decent price, and Scottie Upshall could be an interesting addition. Maybe Torres will come back too.

On the fourth line, how about Matt Bradley? Aaron Asham is available once again, and although he's older, I've always like Chris Clark. Brad Winchester is another big dude he could be brought in for cheap.

Unless Gillis is planning to move Ballard - which will be a tough sell considering the season he had and the pricetag he carries - it looks like the blue line is pretty much set. The only question I have is will Sami Salo be brought back for one more year, or will the Canucks try to find younger, more healthy depth players for that blue line? But I have a feeling what we see back there right now is what we'll get come September.

I was really hoping the Canucks might be able to take a run at Brooks Laich or Chad Larose, but as expected they didn't last long enough to hit the UFA market.

Regardless - its not a strong FA group, but the good news is the Canucks just need to make some minor adjustments to a couple of their lines, and there are options out there. Don't expect a crazy busy July 1, but a couple strong additions should be made nonetheless.

GIANTSFAN 06-29-2011 09:18 PM

Sounds like Salo & Tambellini will be back. I don't know why anyone would want Jovo back? He's always been terrible in his own zone, has zero physical play in him & he's injury prone. Some bad GM will offer him a few million, & he's not worth more than 1 dollar. The guy was done in his last season in Vancouver, & he's not the answer. I loved Jovo when he was here, but his best days are almost 10 yrs ago.

stevecanuck16 06-29-2011 10:31 PM

Is this the worst free agent crop in years or what? Having a tough time remembering one this dull. It's going to be funny watching them try to fill 12 hours of coverage on TSN.
