The Future with or without Weber

regardless of if we get weber or not we should make the playoffs this year. the lines look much different with jagr and others gone. my guess on the lines.

hartnell-giroux-briere
fedetenko-schenn-simmonds
vorachek-couterier-read
rinaldo-wellwood-talbot
shelley/sestito

timo-coburn
grossman-schenn
gervais-mezaros
lilja

bryz
leighton

where things will get interesting is after this season. we have over 15mil coming off the books as UFA (hartnell, fedetenko, shelley, timmonen, lilja, leighton) simmonds, wellwood and rinaldo are the onlyRFA we would need to resign.

this is where i really like the weber offer. IF we do get him, the cap hit will be much easier to deal with after next year. I honestly think timo is done after next year which gives us over 6mil in cap space and i know some of you might disagree here but if the young kids have a great season, hartnell is let go after the season too. that would be another 4mil.

another twist for after next season could be corey perry and ryan getzlaf. both are UFA and i think either of them would look really good next to giroux on the top line. Fuk rick nash and bobby ryan, wait a little, keep the young guys together and pay a ****load for 1 of them.

now look at my line up again and put weber where timo is and perry/getzlaf where hartnell is. i know there will be some tinkering to that cause homer always is trying to make the team better but i think a core group of giroux, weber, perry or getzlaf plus the kids is gonna be a really good team and a force in the east for years to come.

the thing is if we end up w/ weber we'll most likely trade at least 2 roster players. my hope is read and voraceck are enough, but realistically i think couturier and voraceck get moved.

id keep simmonds, briere and schenn together. if voraceck stays i think he takes jagrs spot w/ g and hartnell. if couturier is here he should anchor the 3rd line, if not id put read or talbot in the middle.

if we do get weber our d is gonna be stacked. id pair him w. either grossmann or timonen, and then have coburn and grossmann/timonen w. meszaros and schenn on the 3rd pairing. thats a stud d corps.

any combo of read, vorachek and mezaros for weber would work for me.

but we dont have to give up any roster players. The offer is made. IF Nashville doesn't match it we give them 4 first rounders. We would realistically just have to move guys to free up cap space in which case getting rid of Read who only makes 900k next year and 1 million the next is a bad move. If I am reading the cap correctly it appears that when Pronger's contract comes off and if Weber becomes a Flyer it leaves us with around 4.5 million for the year and we would have to sign Voracek + Sestito. Burying Lilja gives us an extra 700k. Am i calculating that right?

im all for burying lilja even if we dont get weber. we would need to sign vorachek and sestito before the season starts which is when prongers cap hit comes off. burying lilja gives us enough for sestito but we are gonna end up moving a roster player or 2 before all is said and done.

this may all be a moot point though since the CBA is up and the current salary cap is part of the negotiations.

i am not sure of the timetable, but i thought you were allowed to be 10% over the cap during the offseason. i believe the LTIR relief would go into effect the same time that 10% is taken away although i am not sure. This would allow us to resign Jakub and Sestito. Also gives us time to shop Mez for pick(s) and cap relief.

EDIT - it appears the LTIR relief doesnt kick in until regular season so you are correct.

I think the Flyers will make the playoffs this year regardless of whether we get Weber or not, but if we do get Weber I think it propels the Flyers to possibly favorites out of the east along with the Rangers. We all saw how losing Pronger affected the defense, and if we can get a solid replacement back there we could be set.

Lines without a Weber deal:

Vorcek Giroux Hartnell
SImmonds Briere Schenn
Feds Coutier Read
Rinaldo Talbot Wellwood

Sestito, Shelly, Holmstrom

Timmonen, Grossman
Schenn, Coburn
Mez, Gervous

Lilja, Gust, Bourdon, Manning
--------------------------------------------------
Lines with a Weber deal; Read, Mez, Vorcek going?

Schenn Giroux Hartnell
Simmonds Breire Wellwood
Feds Coutier Talbot
Rinaldo Holmstrom Sestito

Timmonen, Weber
Grossman, Coburn
Gervous, Schenn

All for fun and barring any other deal, which i think they would still try and make.

switch out bourdon for gervais and that would be a legit lineup. only problem is your missing talbot. if we land weber AND doan i say we are the easy favorite for the east to make the finals this year.

bourdon is better then gervais, as long as he isnt part of trade if it takes place

i agree with bourdon being better the gervais but unless they decide to bury lilja i see gervais playing a majority of the games and bourdon starting the season in the AHL
