some teams have more than 2 tough guys, and then like jack schitt said there are the ones at the top that don't use any, i also think this league is going soft, the tough guys that do play are seeing 2 minutes a nigh i that. you can't tell me there are fans who want a softer, nice, no-fight league!!???

The pussification of the league is reaching full force. Is it a coincidence that 7 out of the top 10 teams in the league are also in the bottom 10 league wide in FM's?

On the flip side, half of the bottom 10 in the standings are in the top 10 FM's.

The Pens, Sharks and Avs are the teams that have the best balance of toughness and winning based on statistics alone....
You are right, but actually I think it has been the case also 10-20 years ago that the bottom teams had more FM's then the top teams. Not sure if it really was like that also in the 80's, but in the 90's most teams sitting on the bottom of the standings did also fight more then the top teams.

Your Boston Bruins led the league in FMs in 1987-88, and went to the Stanley Cup Final. The Flyers were top-10 in 1986-87 and took the Oilers to 7 games in the Final. Calgary was top-5 in FMs when they went to the Final in 1995-86. Even Edmonton had a lot of FMs in the 80s during their Cup runs compared to what you'd expect from a talented team like they were. It was pretty consistent in the 80s that many of the better teams in the league also were among the league leaders in fights. Of course, the reverse is true today.

Spot on. Back in those days, two players racked up more FM's than entire teams do now. On the B's team you mentioned Miller and Byers combined for 59 fights. Add Neely and that's 70 .... which was less than 1/2 the team FM's! Over 20 players on that roster dropped the gloves that year. While they had the most, they weren't unique ... the Habs, Whalers, Nords, Sabres etc.. followed suit.

Man, I miss those days.

EDIT: McLaren vs Bickell - Win McLaren
(sorry for derailing the thread... I musta thought I was in "Remember when").

Terrible camera work by Versus. There's a huge scrum on the ice, so let's show about 4 instant replays before cutting back to live action when a fight has already started. Brilliant! From what we were lucky enough to see, the fight was pretty much all McLaren as he picks up the win over Bickell.

Win McLaren. He seemed pissed and intended to really hurt Bickell.

WTF was Versus doing right there?

I like how Colin Fraser got double teamed for seemingly no reason at the beginning of the clip haha.

I was wondering when someone would mention this.I was screaming at the TV,knowing there was something going on,as you hear the crowd getting louder.Just terrible, the Camera director,or whatever his title is,has no hockey sense whatsoever.

As far as the Hawks,I hope the Sharks are eliminated by the time we would meet them in the playoffs. This of course,if the Hawks survive the 1st round.

At least us Hawk fans know we're missing something by the Drumming of Frank Pelico's organ over the PA.

Haha yeah, even if the drum noises can be annoying at times, at least it lets us know something is going on when Versus sucks too much to actually show us.
