The better team did win but sadly, the way they won is pretty nauseating. The style of play, the positional, possession type game is not very fun to watch. Add in that they have no real enforcer, no fights in the finals, etc and it's pretty dull to watch.
Sure, it was fierce competition but Detroit just grinds you down, plops in a goal or 3 and wins more often than they lose. It's like a high percentage way of playing hockey. Yuck. I don't know that there is anything that can be done about it either. Illegal defense like in basketball? Get rid of the blue lines? They were supposed to have fixed all that trap crap by getting rid of the red line and calling obstruction. The hand check is still the easy way to slow down an opponent and that was supposed to be gotten rid of and it clearly hasn't. A player skating full speed need only be checked with a hand to the shoulder, face, arm, whatever and it slows him down enough for the 2nd dman to retrieve the puck. This is so obvious. Next preseason, they will start calling it again and gradually swallow the whistles but will still call the mysterious hooking where player X touches the thigh of player Y and up goes the arm. Get it right Campbell and Buttman! Let the players fight for christ sake and get hockey back to it's real glory of the 70's and 80's. Fast hockey and no instigator. |

Wings were the better team. I hate their style of play though.
Unfortunately a Euro team winning this season cancels out the progress to tougher hockey from a North American style team winning last year. 08-09 will look like 05-06 rather than 07-08. |

I can understand a non-Wings fan hating the team, they are the New York Yankees of the NHL and a guy like Maltby is so easy to hate, when you're not a fan of them and enjoying their success I can understand them being disciplined gets irritating, watching the 3rd period of 4-0 games with no hopes of a brawl breaking out, but welcome to 2008 where hockey (and sports) has evolved and teams are finding better ways to win games and championships, from an entertainment stand point it sucks but how can you act like the Red Wings are a disgrace to the game of hockey when the Islanders are even softer and they can't even make the playoffs? You post in EVERY single Red Wings thread EVERY day, stop being so fukking bitter. |

From 2005-2007 if the argument was made that the team was a joke to hockey I wouldn't even try or want to argue against that... the transition from last year to this year was huge for the organization and fans, much room to improve from a fight fans point of view but the teams not even comparable to last year.

I can't wait til next season. McCarty will actually have time to get in shape, Abdelkader will get a decent shot at making the roster, Downey most likely will get re signed. Who knows if Drake will retire. Kopecky will be fresh again. Jim Nill said he wants to re sign Stuart. Even before the July free agency starts, this team is looking good as far as toughness goes.

I know the Islanders suck btw, read the Isles thread, every Isles fan on this site thought they were a disgrace. Bash them all you want, Ill probably just agree. I will disagree with saying Detroit is tougher than the Islanders. Their final lineup had: Brennan, Jackman, Fata, Spiller, Guerin and Comrie, with Witt and Sutton out of the lineup. Most of the year they were a disgrace. So lets say your four against them, I doubt Detroit would "take all 20+ players". The middle/Beginning had Simon, Jackman for some, Sutton, Witt, Guerin, Comrie. Not saying this is at all great but we had 29 fights this regular season and 23 in pre-season compared to 4 in pre-season and 21 in regular for Detroit. The Detroit organization doesnt have much toughness, same for Grand Rapids. Its a known fact and your all up in arms over a quote in a fellow Detroit fans signature. They are the best at what they do, some people arent going to support it, I support a terrible team but you cant moan and groan over something facts. The fact is: they may be tougher than last year but that doesnt mean they are tough. The new NHL isnt always an excuse, 10 fights last year? 6 the year before? They dont support rough hockey, thats all Im saying. Respond by PMing me, Im not gunna jam up the thread.

Ummm...that would be the Montreal Canadiens. The Red Wings are the Dodgers of the NHL. Trying to say Detroit is tough is a farce. They aren't. Check the attendance, people don't like the way they play hockey. Detroit is a tough town, they want Kocur and Probert. Ok, they are long retired, get someone like them. Downey and McCarty aren't going to cut it in that city. They are likeable players, sure but they aren't enforcers, they don't scare anyone, they don't intimidate. 47 fights since the lockout? OMG That is so pathetic and what's wrong with the NHL right now. The NHL is turning into the world championships or Olympics and I think it sucks the sweat off a cows balls! It's definitely not the sport I grew up with and with Detroit/Sweden winning the Stanley Cup, other teams WILL copy that style and that is BAD for the NHL. I guess it's great if you're a pussified Euro who hates violence but most of us like it. |

Talk to any Detroit native here, or elsewhere, and they have nothing good to say for the city, economy wise and how the ****ty the job market is. You'll also hear great things about their grand ole' mayor Kwame Kilpatrick - but thats another thread.
