Am I the only one who thinks Boyle didn't turtle, but got layed out by the second punch?
Why all the hate on Boyle? So what if he's 6'7" and can't fight, at least he tries? He's also a college player and while guys like Neil and Carkner were learing how to fight in junior hockey , Boyle was in class. I never understood why guys who aren't good fighters, but at least try get so much disrespect. There are alot worse guys in the NHL that need more mocking than Brian Boyle. He has fights against J-F Jaques, Matt Clackson, Ryan Flinn, Theo Peckham, Nicholas Blanchard, Matt Walker, Zenon Kenopka, Adam Mair, Jody Shelly, Tom Sestito, Wayne Simmonds and now Chris Neil. Not a bad fight card in my opinion.

Good post, but I disagree with you here. Carkner doesn't have to wait for anything - he (seemed to) ask Boyle to go, gave him a glove on punch before dropping the gloves, then forced the issue. Classic, old-school enforcing. Totally according to code as far as I'm concerned.

Probably some of the best enforcing I've seen in a long long time. Carkner was clearly instructed to take care of business and did so, emphatically. Well done Mr. Carkner.
I'm convinced that this incident has given the Sens life in this series.

The funny this is im FAAAAR from a Rag$ fan, (im a hater lol) but im still a 'hockey fan' especially when its good old school rough emotional hockey and this particluar game was entertaining and emotional right from the start! And il defend Boyle 1 more time --- the guy had a great game, was involved all night long from some body-hits/open ice checks, some fights, blocked shots, and scored a goal, he was all over the place last night on the ice How can ANYONE whos a fan of physical hockey not like that? i dont understand it, that was a very entertaining hockey game! ? |

This was an awesome game.
The Sens played a rather uninspired game 1, and during that game they happened to watch one of their star players in Karlsson get roughed up in a scrum by Brian Boyle. While notoriously not the greatest fighter for a guy his size, Boyle is a much more pugilistic player. The Sens were looking for something to rally around and they chose that. Even as a Ranger fan, can you blame them? If a guy like Zenon Konopka was roughing up Gaborik or Brad Richards in a scrum (which he did in game 2), wouldn't you want your team's tough guys to make him answer the bell? Carkner gave Boyle the opportunity to defend himself, he chose not to. I think Carkner's goal was to instigate the fight, not to end up with a total jump job that would put his team down a man for 5 minutes. Boyle stared back at Carkner, I guess figuring Carkner wouldn't start throwing punches, but he did. That's not a sucker punch, that's Boyle making the conscious decision to not defend himself and Carkner choosing to enforce to rally his team. You may not like Carkner continuing to pummel Boyle on the ice, but that's an effort to send a message. But what the hell is this talk of supplementary discipline for Carkner? It clearly wasn't a sucker punch, and even if you don't like it, when did it become a suspendable offense to keep punching a guy once he's down in a fight? He got 5 and a game, putting his team on a penalty kill for a major penalty. That's pretty harsh. What's this nonsense of calling for a suspension? Dubinsky did the right thing coming to the aid of his teammate. Unfortunately, followed the rulebook rather literally and gave him the boot for being third man in. Tough break and a very soft call in my opinion, but hey, at least it gives Dubinsky something that's actually worth complaining about! Anyway, Neil-Boyle was a garbage draw.
