New Jersey Devils Official 2009-2010 Thread

Well it seems like it's time to start off a new thread for next season as free agency has gone underway. Despite losing Gionta, Madden, Rupp, and Clemmensen, this team still looks pretty good.

Elias-Zubrus-Rolston
Parise-Zajac-Langenbrunner
Shanahan-Pelley?-Clarkson
Pandolfo-?????-Leblond?

Oduya-Martin
White-Salvador
Greene-Mottau

Brodeur
Weekes?

I would like Lou to obviously get some sort of center who can work the PK, kind of like a John Madden except obviously cheaper. I actually the Devils are fine with the scorers as the ZZ Pops line is still there as is Patrik Elias. I expect Brian Rolston to have a bounce back season too. Hopefully Leblond gets a shot to play full time this year.

The defense is ok. The top 4 guys are fine, but it just seems like the Devils are missing something. I do hope that Corrente is able to make the team.

I'll make some corrections to your lines there based on what I've read.

Elias-Rolston-Bergfors

Parise-Zajac-Langenbrunner

Pandolfo-Zubrus-Clarkson

Leblond-Pelley- ????

Shanahan could come back and play the 4th line and the PP and a little PK if need be. I'd like to see a center so Rolston or Elias don't have to play it, but the Devils may be stuck. The D isn't bad and I think Corrente has a good chance at making the team as 6th-7th D man.

Right now there is a chance Frazee will back up Brodeur next year.

I've been hearing that Frazee did well in Lowell last season. It's a shame I can't see any Lowell games because I'd like to know how good these prospects are. Do you think Corrente is better than Andy Greene or Mike Mottau?

I also keep on forgetting that Bergfors is in the system.

I too would like to see the Devils get some sort of center but I don't know who is still available besides Saku Koivu.

I really thnk he is going to make a big trade for a big name defenseman.

I know, you'll think I'm crazy and it might be pie-in-the-sky, but I think He might trade for Phaneuf. Calgary cannot keep all of its players right now. their salary is ridiculously high. There are 11 defenseman on their roster right now.

If we got Phaneuf, it would be huge.

No way are they going to move Phaneuf. He is the future of that team. Not a chance at all they'll move him. Calgary would be more likely to get rid of Robyn Regehr before moving Phaneuf.

I thought Iginla was still leading the team? You see?

There is Kiprusoff, Iginla, Regehr, and Phaneuf. If there is a team ready for a trade, its Calgary and we seem to have a rapport with them right now(whether it is amicable or not is still up in the air). I mention Phaneuf because He is a fearsome protector in his own end and we need that in a defenseman. He also just had his worst season of his career and his ally Keenan was run out of town.
But then he is awfully expensive.

Maybe Iginla? That would be choice..

The Flames do need to make some cap room, but they are absolutely not going to move Phaneuf or Iginla. D-Sutter would find himself out of a job before the fax was even done being sent to the league to file the trade papers. They may move Regehr as NJD said but right now with what they have in their top 4 defensemen they're solid. I think they may try and move Olli Jokinen though which could help solve our problems at center as much as Regehr might help on D.

Let's remember though too that Koivu is still out there as is Jordan Leopold.

NJD I haven't seen a lot of Corrente, and I know he had a tough year in Lowell but got better as it went on, but he can definitely throw 'em and play physical which I think is something the team needs in a 6th or 7th guy. Rotate him, Mottau and Greene if they don't make a trade or a signing.

Also, no one is going to be excited about it, but I think this Ilkka Pikkarainen signing could be cool. He had 24 goals and a 149 PIMS in Finland last year. So apparently Ilkka Pikkarainen is Finnish for "David Clarkson." It looks like he could add some size and some hands to the 3rd or 4th line. I like that.

No.

Look, the guy is renowned as a cheap shot artist and an agitator. One who can't back up his behavior with real fighting skills. Clarkson is not in that mold at all. He seems to be a european Bobby Holik type player.

There are very few players with the grit, skill, and balls combination that Clarkson brings to the Devils.

You just live to piss in people's Cheerios don't you? I'm not saying he's exactly like him. I'm saying they're similar. The Finns that have seen him says he's a cheap shot artist, no wonder, you can't fight there. The people that saw him when he was in Lowell say he hits hard and agitates and can score some goals. Either way I'm excited to add an agitator/pest type guy who can chip in on the 3rd/4th line.

By the way did you look up the difference between a free agent signing and a trade yet?

I thought Bobby Holik was European?

We can argue all we want about who this guy is most similar to, but the bottom line is that this guy seems to put up some decent numbers and $hit gets started when he's on the ice. Me likey!

Thats not it at all - i'll be honest with ya. I practically worship David Clarkson. So I'm bound to correcting and making discrepancies when comparisons are made to him.

Alas, in today's NHL there are so few middleweight brawlers that score, agitate, fight like him and as often as him.

Clarkson fanboy I am.
