Oilers Name Ethan Moreau Captain

The Edmonton Oilers have named Ethan Moreau as their new captain, making him the 12th player to wear the C since the team joined the NHL in 1979.

The 32-year-old left winger is entering his 12th NHL season and his ninth with the Oilers. Joining the Oilers on March 20, 1999 in a trade with the Chicago Blackhawks, the 62, 2002 pound native of Huntsville, Ontario has scored 84-75-159 with 548 penalty minutes in 475 career games as an Oiler and has NHL career totals of 117-107-224 with 832 PIM in 685 regular season games.

Oilers coach Craig MacTavish says the decision to name Moreau the Oilers new captain was made after careful consideration. MacTavish says, Ethans leadership at this stage of his career is highly developed. The intensity and physical play that he exhibits every shift is a great example for everyone. Its his voice in our dressing room that has the most impact and at the end of the day, Ethan was an obvious choice.

Moreau said, "I'm extremely honoured and consider it a priviledge to be named captain of the Edmonton Oilers. I have a tremendous amount of respect for the organization and will continue to strive towards bringing the Stanley Cup back to Edmonton."

The Oilers have also named four alternate captains. Ales Hemsky and Shawn Horcoff will wear As for home games and Steve Staios and Jarret Stoll will be alternate captains for road games.

Moreau joins Ron Chipperfield (1979-80), Blair MacDonald (1980-81), Lee Fogolin (1980-81 to 1982-1983), Wayne Gretzky (1983-84 to 1987-88), Mark Messier (1988-89 to 1990-91), Kevin Lowe (1991-92), Craig MacTavish (1992-93 to 1993-94), Shayne Corson (1994-95), Kelly Buchberger (1995-96 to 1998-99), Doug Weight (1999-00 to 2000-01) and Jason Smith (2001-02 to 2006-07) in the succession of Oiler captains.

Great choice; the obvious one.

Ales Hemsky should not be allowed to wear and "A" until he does something significant here by sticking up for someone (or getting better-than-decent point totals). Not a leader in my eyes.

P.S.: I didn't know that Ethan had been packing on the pounds lately...

Definitely should have been a no-brainer for the Oilers to make Moreau captain. I also question Hemsky wearing a letter. I don't see why so many teams don't just do 2 alternates all the time.
Steve Webb for Commissioner.
