Fighter of the Decade

Hello all,

This is James O'Brien, contributor to the blogs Battle of California/Cycle like the Sedins. I'm posting here today regarding a special section on Cycle like the Sedins: the All-Decade team.

In this case, my goal is to name the Greatest Pugilist of the '00s. While considering this it came to me that, frankly, I don't have much of a clue. Sure, I could just guess and throw in Laraque but that just doesn't seem interesting or informed.

Which is where I need your help. Please inform me of some good candidates for Fighter of the Decade and why so. A modicum of actual hockey ability never hurts, but ultimately this is about the last guy you'd ever want to meet in a dark alley or after boarding a 100-point player.

Feel free to either respond to this post or leave comments on the blog. Warning: what you say may be held against you in a snarky NHL blog (or immortalized ... yeah, that sounds much better).

-James

i'd say donald brashear. maybe i'm not thinking about it enough though. reason would be he is and has been the toughest hockey player in the league for a long time now. if there is anyone whos hand is feared, it is his barrage of lefts.

i would probably say brashear too. there is nothing wrong with saying laraque obviously, the guy barely loses. but he doesnt have as much as a mean streak as brashear, so if you saw laraque in an alley he might give u a lecture, while brashear is going to break your face with a left.

great idea james!

Thanks guys, definitely enjoy the explanations. Keep 'em coming.

Also, feel free to throw in a guy who maybe the common fan wouldn't think of. (Particularly if there's a fighter who was a big-time menace who maybe struggled to stay at the NHL over several years)

Donald Brashear

He has been arguably the champ for the past decade. He has been more active than Georges Laraque who is also arguably the champ. He can flip a switch and can be downright nasty if he wants to, and can also beat on the leagues other heavyweights. He rarely loses, has an old school enforcer mentality and does what he wants on the ice.

Brashear beat your favorite fighter. Undisputed top 5 all time.

well it depends.
If you want the dominant fighter, I'd say Laraque.
But if you want a testiment to the fighters of old.
I'd say Orr or Godard.

Laraque could be the only comparison. I think Brashear takes the cake out of these 2.

You would honestly say that Godard or Orr could be the fighter of the decade over Brashear?

Without a doubt, Donald Brashear, beating the biggest and toughest guys in the past 10+ years. I find Brashear to be the meaner fighter between him and Laraque, especially when he was younger (MTL/VAN), even after guys would go down he'd be throwing.

That's just the way it's going to go."

Brashear is tops, but a great honorable mention would be Dennis Bonvie. A hard working, well respected enforcer, a leader, and a guy who continued the good fight in the AHL even as he knew his short stints in the NHL were over. Plus, he was a 5'11, 200 pounder fighting 6'4+ heavyweight monsters night in and night out.

Big Georges Laraque in my opinion.. he has been the most dominant winning about 99% of his fights plus he contributed in edmonton's playoff run.. he has protected crosby.. he has fought them all and beat them all
