2011-12 Team Fighting Report Cards
Haven't seen anyone do this yet so I'll get it started.
Habs: Ryan White - 7 fights. Unfortunately he missed most of the season with a sports hernia but he came back quite nicely. Started out with a pretty good tilt against Adam Macquaid in what I thought would be a mismatch in the Bruins' favour. Looked out of his league against Erik Gudbranson a week later taking a loss, had a fun night against the Wild when he fought Stephane Veilleux off the opening draw and then later attacked him, gloves off, after he took a few pokes at a loose puck around the Habs net. Had a pretty good tilt with Matt Martin of the Isles and followed that up with a tilt against Chris Neil which he looked to bail out of when Neil was ready to get going. Finally finished up the season with another loss to Gudbranson which apparently concussed him and put him on the shelf. Loved the enthusiasm he showed and spark he provided the Habs in a 6 weeks of action but he may have to pick his spots a little better if he wants to stick around as he is not a very big guy. Grade B+. Brad Staubitz - 6 fights. A trade deadline day acquisition via waivers, Staubitz gave the Habs a pretty decent light-heavy/heavy for the first time since Laraque(if you can even count him). Started out with a win over Pierre-Cedric Labrie in a pretty good tilt and then beat out Mike Brown in what Jim Hughson called a 'scary fight.' Both guys were throwing with evil intentions. Next up was another good win against a willing rook in Zack Kassian followed by a loss to Chris Neil. Finished off the season edging out Cody McCormick and Zenon Konopka. Like White, Staubitz made the Habs watchable in the final month and a half of the season. Hope they bring him back next year but I could see the Habs actually upgrading on him based on the coaching they are bringing in. Grade A. Travis Moen - 3 fights. For the first two thirds of the season Moen was the only person on the Habs with any fighting ability and he didn't do it too often. Although he did play some of the best hockey of his career and was a key PK'er for the Habs. Unfortunately once the Habs got him some help he was out for the year with injury. His three fights were pretty uneventful ones with Cody McCormick, Shawn Thornton and Stu Bickel. Another guy I hope the Habs re-sign but not with the expectation of being the best fighter on the team. Grade D. Other fights: Petteri Nokelainen - 3 fights. Did ok in a fight with Michael Sauer but took losses, as expected to Andre Deveaux and Jared Cowen. 3 more fights than most fans expected from him. Stood up for himself when needed. P.K. Subban - 3 fights. Had a hilarious fight with Brad Marchand and two other fights against Blake Wheeler and Colin Greening. Will never be a good fighter but can expect 3-4 fights per year against other non-fighters. Max Pacioretty - 2 fights. Nothing fights against Brian Lee and Chris Kunitz. A good example of the new definition of power forward. 'Big and scores goal with some hitting.' Not the old definition. Big, hits lots, fights and scores. One fight each Rene Bourque - Pretty easy win against Matt Hendricks in his first game as a Hab. May as well become a fighter because he doesn't do much else out there. Michael Blunden - Loss to Ryan Callahan. Would like to see more out him as he probably doesn't do enough other things to become a full time NHL'er. Great skater and hitter for a big man which means he can punish D on the forechek if he wants to. Josh Gorges - Loss to Pavel Kubina. A heart and soul, warrior of a player but not much of a fighter. Hal Gill - Dropped the mitts with the Jets Chris Thorburn but made no effort to throw punches while holding off Thorburn. Team score. Was a tale of two seasons as the Habs finished with 28 fights (tied for 21st most in the league) but probably 16-18 of them came in the final 6 weeks of the season. Final grade C-. Paul Bissonnette - 8 (1 playoff)
Eight fights for the team's main fighter is a pretty low amount. It had to do with the combination of the lack of game's dressed and his desire to drop the gloves. However, his play on the ice likely contributed to not playing many games. According to the voting on this site, he only won two of his eight fights (against Tim Jackman and Brandon Bollig). Grade: D Kyle Chipchura - 7 (1 playoff) This man was a nice surprise to the team adding toughness and playmaking ability as the fourth line center. As a fighter, he's won half of his fights and settled himself as a solid middleweight fighter in this league. I definitely see him being re-signed as our 4th line center again. Grade: B Raffi Torres - 5 Torres is the exact definition as a player you would hate if he's not on your team, but absolutely love if he was. He's grown into one of my favorite players, as I really adore the big time hitters. As for his fighting, he actually surprised me how active he was. However, none of his fights were anything special. Grade: C Other fights: Shane Doan - 2 Rostislav Klesla - 2 Gilbert Brule - 1 Martin Hanzal - 1 Taylor Pyatt -1 Chris Summers - 1 Keith Yandle - 1 Team Grade - D Man, doing these are not fun anymore unlike when I used to do these with guys like Carcillo and Gratton. |

New York Islanders
Matt Martin- 15 fights- Martin was pretty much the only brightspot in an absolute cluster**** year for the Isles on the fighting front. Buffalo seemed to draw out the anger of Martin as 4 of 15 were against Kaleta, Finley, Weber and Kassian. I found that to be pretty funny and two of his best fights were the ones with Kassian and Kaleta. His most decisive win came against Wayne Simmonds but for the most part, most of his fights were pretty average. The fact that he is one of the most physical players in the league makes up for that. Martin's an RFA, he's really the only other guy on the team with any heart so it would be tragic to see him go anywhere else. I'll give him a B. Mike Haley- 7 fights- 14 games played, 57 PIMS: I love that stat. It's disgusting that he wasn't up with this team more. The likes of Rolston, Reasoner and Pandolfo sucked his playing time down the drain, and with that went any entertainment this team had outside of Martin. I think it's safe to say that Haley is one of the most entertaining, old-school type players to lace em' up right now. It's brutal that the Islanders don't value that after the spark he provided last year. His highlights include being in Stu Bickel's nightmares and one of the best fights of the year with Janssen. He get's an A for his time here, the team however....well, **** them. Other: Hamonic- 2- He took a slapshot to the face so fighting was out of the question for him most of the season. He had one crappy one against Upshall and another against Evander Kane. Mottau- 1- No comment, **** him. Staios- 1- Retirement should be in his future.....very near future. Reese- 1- Good kid, managed to piss off the whole city of Philadelphia by fighting Giroux. Trevor Gillies- Played in a few games at the beginning of the year, never found a fight. Overall: The Islanders couldn't figure out that they were soft as ****. They let the old guys clog the fourth line and prevent Haley from seeing the NHL this year. Several shots were taken against them, nothing ever came out of it. Garth Snow and his cronies get a D- for this disgrace they put together. It made it even worse considering they were one of the toughest teams in the league the year before. They sure have alot of things to do before next season.

Buffalo Sabres
The Sabres were a surprise this season, finishing in the Top 10 in FM's (40) despite not carrying anything close to a HW. Leaders: __________________________________________________ _____ Cody McCormick - 8 FM's Opposition: Travis Moen, Cody Bass, Tim Jackman, Tanner Glass, Zenon Konopka, Mark Stuart, Shawn Thornton and Brad Staubitz Record::3-1-5 Highlight:: A dandy T2T with Tanner Glass Grade:; B. Too many short draws and only 1/2 as active as last season. __________________________________________________ ______ Mike Weber - 6 FM's Opposition:: Braydon Coburn, Jason Chimera, Shawn Thornton, Matt Martin,Ryan Getzlaf, Shawn Matthias Record: 1-1-4 Lowlight: Took a beating at the hands of Thornton. Granted, that's to be expected, and Thornton did come off the bench and get the jump on him, but as a Sabres fan it was demoralizing. Grade: C. Weber played with more of an edge this season, but he really needs to work on his pugilistic skills in the off season if he's going to continue to drop the gloves. __________________________________________________ ______ Paul Gaustad- 4 FM's Opposition: Tim Gleason, Matt Bradley, Milan Lucic, Brandon Prust Record: 2-2-0 Grade: D-. Gaustad donned a visor this season and deservedly took some heat over it... as well as taking a ton of heat for not addressing the Lucic/Miller hit on the ice when it happened. A lot of hockey fans felt that having no repsonse started the skid that led to them missing the playoffs yet again, and caused a rift in the lockerroom. Be that as it may, he tried to man up and take on Lucic but it was too little too late. Grade would have been an F had he not had decent showings against Gleason and Bradley. Can't say I'm sad to see him on another team..... __________________________________________________ _ Patrick Kaleta- 4 FM's Opposition: Steve Downie, Cody Bass, Matt Martin, Milan Lucic Record:2-2-0 Grade:C -. Kaleta had another injury plagued season and was suspended for questionable hitting. took a beating from Lucic . Injuries and being gun shy about hitting showed in his game. It's a shame because he has been known to have some decent fights, just not this season. __________________________________________________ ___ Robyn Regher -4 FM's Opposition:Raffi Torres, Zdeno Chara, Corey Perry and Shawn Thornton Record: 1-2-1 Grade: F. probably the biggest disappointment for me this year. Certainly didn't live up to the rugged Dman rep he came in to town with. Barely fought, and when he did he looked like crap. __________________________________________________ _____ Joe Finley - 2 FM's Opposition: Matt Martin, Ryan Reaves Record:1-1-0 Grade: C. Finley was brought up to tray and add some toughness.... and proved that he wasn't really up to the task despite being 6'7" and 250 lbs. He handled a much smaller Matt Martin, but the Finley experiment came to an end courtesy of RFOTY candidate Ryan Reaves. __________________________________________________ _______ Zack Kassian - 2 FM's Opposition: Matt Martin, Tom Sestito Record: 1-0-1 Grade: C .Kassian never really developed into the Lucic-type power forward he was billed as here in Buffalo. I was not happy to see him go, but the reality is that the mgt here had beat the toughness out of him with their pussified system and philosophy. Good luck to him elsewhere. __________________________________________________ _______- Corey Tropp- 2 FM's Opposition: Zac Rinaldo, Matt Belesky Record:1-0-1 Grade: B. Had a good win over Rinaldo. Wish he would have been called up more. Good little sparkplug. __________________________________________________ ________ Christian Ehrhoff - 3 FM's Opposition: Colin Greening, Troy Brouwer, Kris Versteeg Record: 1-0-2 Grade: B. Ehrhoff played with more of an edge than I tought. Not great fights, but at least he came with aome heart along with that HUGE contract. __________________________________________________ _________ Rounding out the FM's with 1 apiece: Matt Ellis Marcus Foligno_ really like this kid. Beat the snot out of Matt Frattin after a great hitting shift. This is the power forward the Sabres wanted KassiaN to be. looking forward to seeing him next season. Brayden McNabb- another kid I really like, went with Jay Rosehill. Didn't win, but didn't embarrass himself either against a damn good fighter. Tyler Myers- Not a fighter, never will be. Travis Turnbull- another spirited youngster that I hope sees some time with the big club next season. __________________________________________________ _______ Overall- D The non-response for the Lucic hit was inexcusable. The only thing keeping it from being an F was that they actually cracked the top 10.

I don't blame Snow. Snow is a very fiery guy. I blame Wang. Isles had a tough team the prior year but after a 100k fine from the league do you think Wang wanted a tough team again? No. |

HE signed Jay Pandolfo, Marty Reasoner and traded for Brian Rolston. I don't think Wang knows enough about the sport to even know who they are. Wang might micromanage so it's not totally Snow's fault but he's the GM and he just hasn't done his job.

Buffalo Sabres
Cody McCormick: McCormick earned himself a contract and full time employment in the NHL last year after a strong 2010-2011 campaign in terms of both fighting and on the score sheet. He led Buffalo with 16 fighting majors and provided some much needed toughness. This year was a different story. McCormick battled injuries this year including 2 concussions which limited him to 50 games. He only fought 8 times this season. McCormick is forced to be the policeman on Buffalo due to their lack of toughness and I appreciate the fact that he tries very hard at it and has little support. That being said, he did not do a very effective job this season as Buffalo was pushed around far too much, especially by Boston. Grade: C Mike Weber: Mike Weber stepped up his physical game this season and also dropped the gloves more. While I was happy to see that as a Sabres fan, the simple fact of the matter is Mike Weber can't fight. Weber did not win any of his 6 fights and most of them (his fight with Thornton being the exception) were boring wrestling matches. Given how weak Buffalo is, I do have to give Weber credit for being willing to mix it up and fight even though it is evident that he has no skill. Grade: C Paul Gaustad: Gaustad's nickname while he was in Buffalo was the Goose. After the way he played this season, his nickname should be the chicken. I have always disliked Gaustad for several reasons. I feel his reputation for toughness is undeserved and I also felt he did not do enough on a soft Buffalo team. Needless to say, this season proved all of those things to be true. Gaustad started the season by wearing a visor. Later on he completely failed his team and his goaltender when they needed him most. When Ryan Miller was run by Lucic, Gaustad (and the rest of the Sabres) failed to respond. A week later Gaustad dropped the gloves with Lucic to save face (and got his butt kicked in the process) but it was too little too late. The damage was done and Buffalo's season was over as far as I'm concerned at that point. After the Lucic fight, Gaustad kept his gloves on for the rest of the season as he only had one more fight. He ended up being traded at the deadline and as far as I'm concerned he deserved to be. Good riddance!!! Grade: F Patrick Kaleta: Kaleta struggled with injuries this season (what else is new). In spite of this, I believe that he really stepped it up this year. For several seasons he was criticized for taking cheapshots, turtling, and not fighting anyone tough (and much of this criticism was deserved). This season Kaleta only fought 4 times. However two of his opponents were Milan Lucic and Matt Martin. Both of those guys are way out of Kaleta's league and weight class and he took them on anyway. That takes a lot of guts especially considering Kaleta went toe-to-toe with Lucic. He deserves a lot of credit and he impressed me this year. Grade: B Robyn Regehr: Regehr was brought in to toughen up the Sabres and he did provide a physical presence. He only fought five times (his fight with Malone isn't on here because they got roughing minors). However I thought Regehr did a solid job as he was one of the few players to stick up for his teammates. I also have to give him credit for tangling with Zdeno Chara. Overall, a decent job done by Robyn Regehr. He doesn’t fight much but he did step up at times. Grade: B- Christian Ehrhoff: It is not Ehrhoff’s job to fight and I was very surprised to see him fight at all. But considering he was one of the few skill players on Buffalo who wasn’t afraid to get involved or stand up for a teammate, I have to give him credit. Grade: B Zack Kassian: Only fought twice and did not provide enough of a physical presence. However he did drop Sestito and go toe-to-toe with Martin so Zack didn’t do too bad. I was not happy to see him get traded. The fact that he didn’t get involved as much as he should’ve does lower his grade. Grade: C + Joe Finley: Huge defenseman but his fighting needs work. He beat Matt Martin but lost to the smaller Reaves. Has to improve if he is to be the enforcer for the team. Grade: C Corey Tropp: Went toe-to-toe with Rinaldo and took it to him while standing up for a teammate. He only got into one more fight but Tropp did provide a spark when in the lineup. Grade: B Summary: The Buffalo Sabres have let many cheapshots go unaddressed for several seasons now. It finally caught up to them. The Lucic incident exposed how weak and gutless this team truly is. They have some tough players in the system (Foligno, McNabb) and just drafted more. But as for the present time, this is a weak and cowardly team that can be intimidated and that is why this team either misses the playoffs or loses in the first round year after year. Team Grade: F On a side note, the fact that a team like Buffalo actually cracked the top 10 in terms of team fighting majors really demonstrates how soft this league has gotten!

Montreal Canadiens
__________________________________________ Ryan White - 7 FMs Opposition: Adam McQuaid, Erik Gudbranson, Stephane Veilleux, Stephane Veilleux, Matt Martin, Chris Neil, Erik Gudbranson Record: 1-4-2 Highlight: First game he plays in months and has a good fight against Adam McQuaid. Lowlight: Being TKOed by Erik Gudbranson? Grade: B Heart, team-first player, brought energy, and fought a lot over his weight class (McQuaid, Gudbranson X2, Neil). But he remains a human punching bag. _____________________________________________ Brad Staubitz - 6 FMs Opposition: Pierre-Cédric Labrie, Mike Brown, Zack Kassian, Chris Neil, Cody McCormick, Zenon Konopka Record: 5-1-0 Highlight: T2T with Mike Brown Grade: A Great mid-season pick-up by a team that desesperatly needed it... him and Ryan White gave the Canadiens a boost in the FMs department... _____________________________________________ Travis Moen - 3 FMs Opposition: Cody McCormick, Shawn Thornton, Stu Bickel Record: 0-0-3 Highlight/Lowlight: None? Grade: C Could have been more active, but he has been injuried since january. He was on pace for his usual 5-7 fights per year which isn't enough from a guy like him. ____________________________________________ Other players: P.K. Subban - 4 FMs - Funny fight against Brad Marchand, but he's no fighter. Just a pest. Petteri Nokelainen - 3 FMs - Willing to stand up for himself even if he knew he would take a beating (against Andre Deveaux) but he shown he was tough for an Euro because any other Euro would have faked an injury after being freightrained like that. Max Pacioretty - 2 FMs - Meh, nothing fights against Chris Kunitz and Brian Lee, perfect example of the "new-NHL powerforward"... over 200lbs, scores, and doesn't hit or fight. Rene Bourque - 1 FM - Lazy ass motherf*cker has beaten Matt Hendricks up. That proves how much of a coward he is, he knows he can fight, he knows he can beat up a middleweight like Hendricks, but never does. Michael Blunden - 1 FM - Loss to Ryan Callahan after he layed a big hit. Typical Randy Cunneyworth type of 4th line plug, doesn't do anything on the ice but is willing to hit and to take a beating. Josh Gorges - 1 FM - Warrior who is going to block a shot with any part of his body, but eh, he's not a fighter by any means. Sacrificed himself by taking a beating to Ryan Malone after a head-shot on Chris Campoli during a pre-season game. Loss to Pavel Kubina in the regular season. Hal Gill - 1 FM - Yup, one fighting major. Gentle giant didn't want to hurt Chris Thorburn so he did absolutly nothing. Team grade: C Could have been worst, but Brad Staubitz saved the day... |

Totally missed this thread! Usually Merlin puts this up at the end of the year.
Anyway, I'll do the Devils' Fighting Report Card. New Jersey Devils - 39 fights Hooray for a small increase in fights! Eric Boulton (9 fights) Boulton started the season off with a bang with the 1 punch TKO over Douglas Murray. However, that punch probably ended hurting Boulton more since he was sidelined for over a month with a broken hand. He eventually returned to the line-up in late November, but had some trouble finding a fight. It wasn't for lack of effort though. The one game I went to this year, he challenged Brandon Prust to a fight off the opening face-off, but Prust decline because of a bad shoulder. Anyway, the second part of the season was better. He got into a great fight with Chris Neil and picked up victories over Prust, Shelley, and Jackman. I liked him this year, it was a shame that he had a bad break with the hand injury though. Grade: B. Entertaining fights, but wish we got to see him fight more. Cam Janssen (9 fights) I was very happy to have Cam back in NJ this year and loved that he was part of the 1-2 HW punch of the Devils along with Boulton. Janssen started the season off strong with a great marathon bout against McGrattan. With Boulton getting injured, Janssen managed to play quite a number of consecutive games which allowed him to have entertaining fights with Micheal Haley twice and new teammate Krys Barch. Janssen also started a rivalry with ex-teammate Mike Rupp in those oh so fun Battle of the Hudson games and he re-kindled a rivalry going all the way back to their days in the OHL with Brandon Prust. Grade: A-. Didn't have the best record, but I don't think he was ever outclassed or pummeled in any of his fights. I also found Janssen to be more entertaining this year. David Clarkson (7 fights) It's weird seeing David Clarkson playing a full season and not even breaking the 10 fight mark. Under most circumstances I'd be disappointed in this lack of activity from him, but this year is an exception. Clarkson turned into a power forward this year with 30 goals and left the fighting to Janssen and Boulton. I firmly believe that Janssen and Boulton were brought in to take the load off Clarkson's shoulders. Instead of Clarkson fighting everyone, he was able to fight guys more his skill level. His one stinker of a fight was against Wayne Simmonds were Clarkson got knocked down and then sort of thrown around, but his one fight that he really enjoyed was against Dion Phaneuf after Phaneuf laid a huge hit on Parise. Grade: B. There was a huge drop off in fights for Clarkson this year, but he actually made the most of his extra time on the ice not fighting by becoming a 30 goal guy and he still stuck up for teammates. Ryan Carter (5 fights) I didn't know what to expect from Ryan Carter when NJ claimed off waivers. I figured he'd fight once or twice and that's it. I was wrong. The fight that we really made me like him was his one against Brandon Dubinsky after Dubinsky called out Clarkson in the media. I like anyone who sticks up for players on my team and that's what Carter did. Also, I loved his fight against Stu Bickel. Even though he lost and knew he'd probably lose going into it, he hung in there and give him all he could handle. Lastly, the dude is clutch in the playoffs and is a Ranger killer. Grade: A-. Loved him and glad he's coming back next season. Others: Mark Fraser 2 fights. I liked him on defense and liked his physicality. Best of luck in Toronto. Brad Mills 2 fights. Really liked him in the pre-season and was a decent scrapper. Too bad that he couldn't stay up full time. Adam Henrique 1 fight. Took on the veteran Iginla. Props for dropping them. Ilya Kovalchuk 1 fight. I love him forever for that TKO on Schenn. Rod Pelley 1 fight. Liked that he stood up for Volchenkov. Tim Sestito 1 fight. Uhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Alexander Urbom 1 fight. The big Swede isn't afraid to fight! I'd love to see him in the NHL full time. Overall team rating: One of my favorite seasons ever. With the run to the Finals, beating the Rangers in the ECF, the opening face-off scraps against NYR, etc. this was definitely a great season. I loved how NJ went old school and had 2 HW's on the roster with Clarkson being the support guy. Team rating: B+
