MacDermid is an early surprise for Bruins

Less than a week into Boston Bruins training camp, Lane MacDermid ranks as one of the biggest surprises, based on his strong play in the intrasquad scrimmage in Providence on Tuesday and the preseason game in Ottawa on Wednesday.

Not known for much more than his physical forechecking and his willingness to fight during his first two seasons in Providence, the rugged left wing has displayed growing confidence and an improving pair of hands in the first few days of camp.

The 22-year-old scored a goal on Tuesday night at the Dunkin Donuts Center and was plus-three, then added another goal on Wednesday night in Ottawa.

Can't say I'm as surprised as the writer is. I've been pumping MacDermid's tires since he went pro. Work ethic goes a long way.

I called at some point last year that he will get NHL time this upcoming season. I'm still sticking by that opinion.
