I love breaking bad but some of the stuff they do is ridiculous.

I've heard mixed reviews on the wire. apparantly as it goes on it's worse.

I've heard Homeland is great.

Wire has no bad seasons. 5th season is criticized more than others but it's still interesting. To make an analogy, Wire is the complete opposite of a show like Oz, where the 1st two seasons were amazing but then it just went off the rails and crashed horribly by the end of its run. Never watched Sopranos but the consensus among most people is Wire/Sopranos, 1/2 in either order.

Well the Sopranos was the greatest t.v. show I have ever seen hands down. and a lot of critics acknowledge that.
Never heard that about the wire though.
Maybe I will watch the wire and see for myself.

Like a lot of cable shows, which are mostly around 12-13 episodes, the first 4-6 are slow, and build the storyline for the rest of the season.

I haven't watched The Wire yet (it's waiting for me, I will soon), so I can't do a character comparison, [em]but[/em] the "absurd" storylines are the point of the show, to show Walter's transition/transformation. While I can't stand his wife (and don't know anyone who can), the rest of the characters are great and Gustavo Fring is one of the best 'bad' guys ever (because who's really bad now?).

This next 'season' is really just part one (8+8 episodes to end it), so I do wonder how they'll treat it.

There's a lot of good TV right now and IMO, this is the best show currently out there.

Best BB season for me was 1st and first half of 2nd. Didn't like 3rd season at all but 4th was much better.

Odd. I thought the first half of season 2 was probably the worst it was. Many people I know stopped watching at The Fly episode, but after that, it was solid.

canuck2 - haven't heard any critic say anything about the Sopranos in a long time. The Wire, Mad Men, Breaking Bad have all drawn them away from it. Plus, the show aged fast. I wouldn't be surprised to even see Deadwood, Battlestar Galatica and The Shield above the Sopranos on a critic list. I became less and less of a fan of that show as it went on. Moments of brilliance surrounded by drawn-out repetition and no likable characters.

Pauline walnuts was likable, that guy made me laugh even when he was wacking somebody. His fear of ghosts was hilarious

The show was all about characters and how zany they could be.

Chris with his temper. all kinds of guys who can be labeled "characters" including tony himself.

Breaking Bad is a excellent show in my opinion, I just started watching it recently and just got all caught up on it.

The Wire is known as perhaps the consensus best drama ever made. Critiquing other dramas based on The Wire is kinda stupid because a show could be really good, but it would take a lot for it to be up to that level. Especially on basic cable
