Mestis teams for 2012-2013
HCK, promoted from Suomi-sarja
Hokki
Jokipojat
Jukurit
JYP-Akatemia
K-Vantaa
KooKoo
LeKi
Peliitat
SaPKo
Sport
TUTO Hockey

And the probably the most interesting preseason roster move here in Finland was done by KooKoo as they signed former SM-liiga tough guy and a real cult player Matt Nickerson (193cm/110kg) to a tryout contract. The American defender has played last games in 2009-2010 when he played 19 games for Springfield Falcons in the AHL. He holds the records for most PIMs in single SM-liiga season with 236 PIMs (in 36 games) in 2005-2006. In SM-liiga Nickerso has 114 regular season games with 28 points (10+18) and 537 PIMs. In playoffs he has 26 games with 4 points (2+2) and 74 PIMs. He has also played in AHL (59. 0+4=4 141), ECHL (13. 1+1=2 73), QMJHL (48. 1+11=12 182), NCAA (38. 5+9=14 179), NAHL (94. 7+35=42 374) and Allsvenskan (6. 1+2=3 18). Nickerson has fought guys like Guillaume Desbiens, Kevin Cormier, Pierre-Luc Leblond, Pasi Nielikäinen, D.J. King, Eric Godard, Joey Tetarenko and Pascal Morency.

JYP announced three new contracts today. Forwards Joose Antonen and Daniel Stumpf are mainly signed for JYP's Mestis affiliate JYP-Akatemia. Antonen is born 1995 and comes from Ilves' juniors and Stumpf, the 21 year old Slovakian comes from Russian MHL where he played for Yunost collecting 43 points (22+21) and 34 PIM in 54 games. He has also 39 games in the Slovakian Extraliga with 5 points (3+2). His contract is for 1+1+1 years.

And now, the most interesting player signed is Canadian/British power forward Ramzi Abid who comes from Salzburg of Austrian EBEL. He is signed to a 1-year contract. Abid has played in NHL, AHL, QMJHL, SEL, KHL, NLA and EBEL. He more than 60 fights and has fought guys like Brett Scheffelmaier, Ryan Flinn, Dave MacIsaac, Shawn Thornton and Josh Gratton.
Stats:
NHL: 68. 14+16=30 78 (2. 0+0=0 0)

Pelicans just announced the signing of 23-year old Canadian center Angelo Esposito. The contract is for the 2012-2013 season. Esposito is Pittsburgh Penguins 1st round choice (20th overall) in the 2007 NHL entry draft but he has no NHL games so far. He has 124 AHL games with 38 points (10+28) and 64 PIMs and 3 ECHL games with 1 assist. He played junior hockey in QMJHL collecting 288 points (120+168) and 202 PIM in 208 games. Last season he spent mostly in AHL playing for San Antonio Rampage and Texas Stars collecting total of 21 points (7+14) and 27 PIM in 54 games. He also had a brief stint with Cincinnati Cyclones in ECHL.

Pelicans just announced the signing of Japanese born Canadian center Ryan O'Marra to a 1 year contract. O'Marra is a big (188cm/100kg) guy and former Edmonton Oilers 1st round pick (15th overall) in 2005 NHL entry draft. He has 33 NHL games with 7 points (1+6) and 17 PIM. Last season he split in NHL (with Edmonton and Anaheim) and AHL (with Oklahoma City and Syracyse). O'Marra has 286 AHL games with 84 points (30+54) and 279 PIM. He has also played in ECHL (24. 11+9=20 45) and junior hockey in OHL (234. 94+129=223 301) and OPJHL (9. 0+3=3 2). He has more than 20 fights in his career, one of the against Danny Richmond, another new Pelicans player

TPS has signed Canadian defender Travis Ehrhardt to a tryout contract. The 23-year old blueliner spent last season with Grand Rapids Griffins in AHL. He has 138 AHL games with 27 points (5+22) and 99 PIM. He has played 3 games in ECHL collecting 2 points (1+1). Ehrhardt played junior hockey in WHL collectin 119 points (20+99) and 311 PIM in 256 games. He has fought guys like Danny Bois and Derek Dorsett.

Ilves has signed big (194cm/93kg) Lithuanian forward Aivaras Bendzius to a 1+2 year contract. The 19-year old forward will most likely spent most if not the whole season playing for Ilves' junior A team. Last season he split with Energija Elektrenai in Latvian league (34. 21+17=38 22) and Energija Elektrenai-2 in Lithuanian league (15. 16+16=32 22)

Pelicans has signed defender Antti Jaatinen to a 1 year contract. He split last season in FEL (19. 1+0=1 10) and Mestis (20. 1+4=5 4). I really don't know why he is signed. He brings absolutely nothing to the game at the FEL level. He has 119 regular season in FEL games with 9 points (1+8) and 38 PIM along with 13 playoff games with 3 points (1+2) and 4 PIM.

HIFK has signed sniper Kimmo Kuhta to a 1 year extension. The 37-year old winger has been one of the best scorers in his team for almost past 10 years. Last season he had 40 points (14+26) and 26 PIM in 50 games.

Mestis team Peliitat has signed steady stay-at-home defender Pekka Saittakari to a 1 year extension. While playing for Fayetteville FireAntz in the SPHL he fought Mike Craigen, David Segal and Dan Buccella

Young power forward Niko Palonen has joined Mestis team TUTO Hockey on tryout. Last season Palonen played 14 games for Ässät in FEL collecting 4 points (1+3) and 58 PIM and had a nice fight with HIFK's Siim Liivik. He also played in Mestis for Jukurit and Hokki collecting 7 points (2+5) and 12 PIM in 24 games. He has also fought big Simo Pulkki. In FEL he has 47 games with 6 points (1+5) and 92 PIM and in Mestis he has 67 games with 21 points (5+16) and 104 PIM. Still hoping to see him in FEL the upcoming season.

And just as I was posting my previous message TPS announced another new defender as they've signed Hannu Pikkarainen to a 1 year contract. Pikkarainen spent last season with Skellefteå in SEL collecting 22 points (3+19) and only 4 PIM in 50 games. Despite his size (186cm/89kg) he lacks physical play and aggressiviness. He has played also in AHL, ECHL, KHL and Mestis
Career stats:
AHL: 7. 0+2=2 2 (3. 1+0=1 2)
ECHL: 10. 2+7=9 10 (1. 0+0=0 0)
FEL: 237. 21+59=80 166 (41. 1+4=5 12)
SEL: 124. 17+68=85 68 (25. 1+4=5 16)
KHL: 16. 0+5=5 2
Mestis: 2. 0+1=1 2

Jokerit's tough guy Semir Ben-Amor has returned to the ice after missing entire 2011-2012 season due injuries. He played his first game today against Swiss NLA team ZSC Lions in European Trophy.

JYP signed Czech center Petr Hubacek to a 2-year extension. Hubacek started last season with HC Kometa Brno in Czech Extraliga and finished it with JYP playing 30 regular season games with 14 points (5+9) and 6 PIM. In playoffs he played a key role as JYP captured it's second Finnish championship title collecting 7 points (1+6) and 2 PIM in 14 games. Hubacek has 6 NHL games for Philadelphia Flyers in 2000-2001 with 1 goal and 2 PIM. He has also represented Czech Republic 4 times in the World Championships (2006, 2007, 2010, 2011)

Blues loaned Swedish defender Jens Westin from Elitserien team MODO. The loan spell is for the games in tournament arranged by Dinamo Riga in Latvia. Hope Westin plays for Blues only in this tournament as he seems to be pretty useless player.

HPK has signed American/Italian defender Dan Spang to a 1-year contract. Spang is San Jose Sharks 2nd round choice (52nd overall) in 2002 NHL entry draft and spent last season with Texas Stars in AHL (70. 4+22=26 28). He has a total of 334 regular season AHL games with 140 points (30+110) and 143 PIM. He has also played in ECHL (17. 2+10=12 10) and NCAA (146. 20+50=70 62). During 2009-2010 he played in Germany for Nürnberg Ice Tigers in DEL collecting 14 points (4+10) and 45 PIM in 48 games.
