Fights in Germany 2011/2012

Here is a little look on the teams in the DEL 2011/2012. Part 1

Adler Mannheim
In Denis Reul the Eagles kept their impressive 6.4 226 lb Monster-Defender who had a great year by fighting Brett Breitkreuz and Jeffrey Szwez and doing well in both fights. He also has a good fight in the QMJHL by usually fighting the heavys and holding his own in all of his fights.

They also kept Mike Glumac who is a decent power forward and Craig MacDonald who plays physical and sticks up for his teammates. Glumac can hold his own while MacDonald is more of an punching bag.

Last year Captain Marcus Kink impressed me by edging out Clarke Wilm.
The years before he fought J.P. Cote and Pat Kavanagh.

This summer they went out and signed a great power forward in Ken Magowan.
He is much more willing and also the better fighter than Mike Glumac.
In his North-Amercia career he fought tough guys like Lane Manson, Jason Kostadine, Hans Benson, Mitch Love-
and beat tough customers like Ryan Donally, Malcolm MacMillan and Mitch Love. He also had at least one fight every year in Germany.

They also signed US Boy Jamie Sifers who is a phsyical Defender who will stick up for his teammates.
He fought Heavyweight Eric Neilson last season and will probably back up the Offensive game of Defender Steve Wagner, who has a good size and some fights on his own fightcard.

They look pretty good this year having Denis Reul and Ken Magowan along with some help by Glumac, Sifers and Kink.

They also added Shawn Belle, who is a another strong Defender. He doesnt fight that often but when he does he usually does very well.

Augsburg Panther
They were the toughest team last season and kept all their 3 Heavyweights in Peter Flache, the DEL Champ from 2009-2010,
Jeff Szwez and Sean O''Connor who were both pretty active last season.

O'Connor was leading the league in fights and had a season with 20 Fights in the WHL. He has names like Derek Boogaard, Dary Hordichuk, David Kaczowka, Riley Cote, Mitch Fritz, Josh Gratton and Raitis Ivanans in his career. His best moment last season was when he jumped into the Ingolstadt Bench to fight Bob Wren.

Jeff Szwez has also fought several heavyweights in his career like Benn Olson, Ryan Jorde, Jimmy Bonneau, Matt Kassian.

Besides the 3 Big Boys they will have a decent middleweight in Chad Bassen.

DEG Metro Stars
They have Andrew Hedlund who is a big Defender with some middleweights on his FightCard who can usually hold is own. He could be more aggressive.
They also have Jason Holland who barely fights but if he does he can hold his own as well. Same goes for big Center Justin Kelly who doesnt play physical at all. Daniel Kreutzer is a solid middleweight who can be an aggressive leader.

EHC München

Their main Fighter will be Ryan Ready again.
Ready's biggest succes ever was a draw against the NHLHeavyweight Matt Carkner. He also fought Jean-Luc Grand-Pierre Joey Tetarenko, John Erskine, Shane O'Brien and beat Louis Robitaille, Jay Harrisson and Aaron Rome.
He will get help by the big Defender Dave Reid and the gritty little german Martin Buchwieser, who also played and fought at the leafs prospect camp this year. Buchwieser also had a great fight against Darin Olver last preseason. Reid doesnt fight a lot but is a big, strong guy.

Iserlohn Roosters
They lost a lot toughness in Jimmy Roy, Cam Paddock and Pat Kavanagh.
Their new Enforcer will be Jeff Cowan, who had a lot of heavyweights on his card. He isnt the best fighter out there but should be very well in Germany, considering there arent any real heavyweights. He is also a decent Player.

They also have big J.Cullimore, who isnt much of an fighter but still impresses with his size.

In Christian Hommel they will have an german fighter for the 4th line who plays an aggressiv style of hockey and also has one or two fights every year.

Eisbaeren Berlin
not much to say here. Barry Tallackson has a good size. He and his small Center Darin Olver are first line player but can also defend theirselves a bit. Darin Olver had an great kd win over Benedikt Schopper last season.
Another new guy Julian Talbot also has a bit of an fight card.
In Weiss and Bielke they have a few fearless germans who will fight back but arent any competition for legit fighters like Cowan, Flache and co.
Richie Regher throws some hard hits and is good for one or two fights a year but again he isnt looking for any fights.
Denis Pederson , who is a great warrior, might return after his horrible injury but even if he does he isnt the fighter ( at this stage of his career) who Berlin needs!

They need a fighter!

Nurnberg IceTigers
Another soft team who is definitly in need of an fighter. Sven Butenschoen is a great teamguy and has tons of good fighters on his fightcard, but it also seems like he has every single fight in his career. Rob Leask, in prolly his last career year, might has a bit physical spirit left in his tank but no one will fear him.
Brad Leeb can hold his own for beeing a first line player but he didnt look interested in fighting.
Jan Benda is a strong Player and youngster Alex Oblinger will try to make him self with his physical game but both guys are no solution to the other teams tough guys.

They should sign a tough player like they did last season when they signed Jan Platil late in the season.

Hannover Scorpions
In signing Jeff Hoggan and Eric Regan they get two decent fighters. Especially Hoggan is a physical player with experience in dropping the gloves.
They also kept their leader Chris Herperger, who will fight if the teams needs it.
Also young defender Stephan Daschner has shown that he will drop them to earn himself a rooster stop. He is a lightweight.
Paul Manning and Sascha Goc arent fighter but will at least add some size.

They arent a tough team by any means but at least arent the weakest team in the league.

Straubing Tigers
They have a great small but very fiesty line in Carsen Germyn ( good fighter) Ryan Ramsay (decent fighter) and Karl Stewart ( good hitter, not a good fighter). They also have Rene Roethke who is a decent fighter for german standarts. In the defensive they will have Bruno St.Jacques who is a physical defenseman with a good fightcard. Andy Canzanello might have one or two fights as well. They have a gritty team and will do well.

Kölner Haie
They are one of the toughest teams in the league. They have a lot of big guys like Andre Lakos who is 6.7, John Tripp ( who doesnt go that often but if he does he is still always dangerous for everyone) or Charlie Stephens ( who plays tough at good days). They also have their enforcer in youngster Brett Breitkreuz who was a decent light-heavy in the whl.
Bjorn Krupp, son from Uwe Krupp, can also fight a bit. Matt Pettinger will fight as well and even hard working Jason Jaspers will fight if the team needs it.
And in Moritz Mueller and Thorsten Ankert they will have two german defenders who will fight as well. Especially Mueller can really hold his own against nearly everyone. He took some boxing lessons as a kid and fought Jimmy roy last season from what I remember.
One of the toughest team with a lot of big guys and guys who fights.

Erci Ingolstadt
They have a highly skilkled team and will be protected by Jeremy Reich, who should be a top 3 fighter in the league, and their hard working Captain Tyler Bouck. Prestin Ryan, who is always willing to fight and Kris Sparre might fight too. They also have Luciano Aquino who plays an dirty, gritty style.
Reich and Bouck will definitly keep care of the team.

Hamburg Freezers
They doesnt have one enforcer but overall a fairly tough team.
Colin Murphy is a great fighter for his size and his partner Brett Englhardt a physical guy. Brendan Brooks is a good fighter as well for his small size. Even their top center Rob Collins has shown that he will fight for the team. David Wolf is a young german who always tries to fill out the enforcer role. He fought Ken Magowan last pre season and jumped off the bench to join into the brawl against Augsburg. He is a big guy and not that bad of an fighter.
In the Defensive big Traverse is a decent fighter, if he really goes which is rare. Charlie Cook also fights from times to times.
They have a depth team toughness and will do fine when it comes to fighting.

EHC Wolfsburg
They lost all their fighters in Ken Magowan, Jeff Hoggan and Chris schmidt.
In Naethan Paetch they brought in a tough Defenseman, Benedikt schopper plays physical too but isnt the best best fighter. In their offensive Norm Milley, is their star player who fought from time to time in juniors. He also had a good bout last season winning vs Paul Albers. John Laliberte, P.Davis will add some size but doesnt fight that often.
Matt Dzieduszicky is good for some fights and usually does well when he does. David Laliberte is a power forward and might fight from times to times too.

Krefeld Pinguine
Lawrence Nycholat and Ben Ondrus will do the fighting for them. Pascal Trepanier and Roland Verwey add a bit depth toughness.
with their late signing of Ondrus they should do well now.

Reul didn't fight any of the top guys when he was in the QMJHL. He avoided them.

Very average fighter, albeit with little to no experience when he came over. He lost most of the six fights he had and didn't win any.

He didn't go anywhere near Ashton Bernard, Brett Gallant, Travis Stacy, Mike Thomas, Kalin Paul etc.

From their fightcard guys like Matt Boland who had 19 fights the year he fought Reul,
6.3 215 lb Ryan Jasinsky , who had 12 fights in only 42 games 08-09 and Kelan Herr who had 22 fights 08-09 winning most of his fights.

I am sure he ducked some guys but when he fights he is usually fighting the big guys and doing pretty well.

Boland and Herr may have fought a lot but weren't great. Maxime Mathieu fought a lot too! Jasinsky was probably the toughest guy he fought.

Herr only ever won against non fighters, who he was quick to jump. He usually got destroyed when he went with anyone legit and he didn't win most of his fights. Not even close.

But the top guys he wanted no part of and this wasn't even the era of Tremblay, Cormier, Neilson, Bellemare, Hand, Doyle, Starenky etc.

This is four years ago when he wasn't much of a fighter.

Reul's biggest attribute was his physical play and hitting, not his fighting. Had the size but lacked the knowhow. He was one of the best hitters during his time in the Q.

But when I think of fighting I just have the memory of him getting destroyed by Justin Pender, who was by no means one of the top fighters.
