Anyone Watching the Spengler Cup?
Saw Canada versus Czech yesterday. Wondering if anyone else is watching too.
Saw Alexandre Daigle on Team Canada. Made me laugh. But his regular team is HC Davos, so I'm wondering what's happening today. What team does he play for come game time? |
I don't think Spengler Cup has ever been on tv here.
If it has it must have been sometime in the nineties. |

And by all over, I mean if there isn't a curling match or Junior Under 18 game, they might show it. :D |
It may be because Team Sweden isn't participating.
I don't know if it is because of the olympics or if they have stopped playing in the Spengler Cup altogether. |
I'll watch it if no other hockey is on.
|
spengler cup is just ****ty canadians playing euro hockey
|
I found the games on Eurosport...:)
|
the lock-out year when rick nash played for HC Davos ,
did he stick with his club team or make the switch to Team Canada ? if i'm in withdrawal from hockey, i'd put in a classic game over watching a current Spengler Cup match anybody wearing a team canada jersey that looked like a billboard ad may get smacked at random in malls |
Traditionally the Spengler cup consisted of the Hosts HC Davos, Team Canada (Based on Canadian players who play mainly in Switzerland or maybe Germany Italy or Austria) A top Swedish team, top Russian or Czech team and tope German team. Since this year, Swedish teams opted out as 4 games in 5 days or possible 5 in 6 if you reach the final is actually ridiculous in the middle of your regular season, playing for nothing more than a presitge trophy. From next year, the Russian league had also opted out which has forced the Spengler cup hierarchy to plan a 6 team tournament from next year - probably meaning 2 groups of 3 then a semi final and final - teams therfore playing either just 2, 3 (inc 1/2 final) or maximum 4 if you reach the final.
It's a great tradition and is a fun time to spend between Boxing day and new year, and it gives Swiss fans a chance to see a top Swedish, Czech or Russian team play live. The Swiss league itself is not far behind those leagues, and Zurich actually amazingly won the European Champions league cup in 2009! It may be because Team Sweden isn't participating. I don't know if it is because of the olympics or if they have stopped playing in the Spengler Cup altogether. It's never TEAM SWEDEN or the CZECH TEAM, just normally the champions from that league so the Olympics had no bearing on them not being there. |

It's two years later, and I think I'm STILL the only one on here watching the Spengler cup...:B)
I don't care what anyone says, I still like it better than the world juniors! |
I might watch it tonight ( or is it tomorrow? ) on eurosport since I am sick anyway and wont go out tonight.
Its not bad.. but with european trophy its a little bit in the background. |
Canada sucked this year. Marty Turco was there goalie too.

2012!
Welp, every single year I bump this thread. Maybe with the lockout, it'll be more than just me and two other people on here watching it. :D
I'm just not an *enormous* junior hockey fan; I'll admit I'm more looking forward to watching adult wash-ups play in Switzerland, take what you will out of that. This year, Ryan Smyth is going to be the Spengler Cup captain. Possible NHLers that could play for Team Canada include Michael Del Zotto, Jason Spezza, and Jonathan Tavares. I think it's actually going to be exceptionally watchable this year, so we'll see who else is tuning in on boxing day! :) |
