I'm way behind. I used to be on top of things about 10 years or so ago and then just stopped paying attention. The more I get back into the latest technology the more useless or silly I think most of it is, for me anyway. Probably a sign of getting old.

It's always been called hash key/hashtag.

Not in the US, it has always been called a pound sign as long as I can remember. Even at my job when trying to enter a conference call the prompt tells you to "state your name and press the pound key when finished". But what you say makes more sense since the rest of the world probably has always called it that.
