Agree with most of the ones mentioned already. Another couple good ones are Blood In, Blood Out and Animal Factory.

There's a few foriegn ones on my "to watch" list like A Prophet (un prophete) and The Hole (Le Trou). But I can't attest to their critical acclaim until I've seen em.
I kind of thought the Last Castle was one of the worst movies I've ever seen.

That's why it's a "guilty pleasure". I know a lot of people thought it was just plain awful. But I really liked it for whatever reason.

Decided to check out Midnight Express today, good film! I wouldn't tie it with Shawshank personally, but I really enjoyed it. Good lookin' out!

Yeah you're right. I dunno what I was thinking there. Shawshank is a much better movie. Alot more going on in Shawshank with sub-plots, epic dialogue and twists and turns.

I think it was just that I saw Midnight Express when I was a little kid, so that shyt hit me harder. Shawshank, I was a grown-up when I saw it for the first time so I was alot more mature and could handle the subject matter. Plus it helped that at that point, I had already had personal experience with prison sex. Frosty and I did a 2 year bid together.
