I like Midway, all-star cast, but a little like a documentary.

Lots of good WW2 movies that have been mentioned, but I think the best "modern"war movies are Black Hawk Down and The Kingdom.

The end of The Kingdom is ****ed but the whole movie is wicked IMO.

THIS! Can't explain that enough! The Pacific I thought sucked ass in comparison. The war scenes were good in it, but the whole thing over all doesn't compare.

Loved the movie "THE BLUE MAX" .

Sink the Bismark was another good one .

I like the movies based on fact , like To Hell And Back , Sargent York , the Alamo , Patton , they make the best watching if their is a bit of truth to the story ..

I definitely share your opinion on these movies. I always wondered in to hell and back how much what happened was real? I mean, it was Audie playing the role, so any sort of hollywood enhancement would be something I assume he would go against...right?

You would think a lot is based on fact , after all Audie was the most decorated solder in the history of the US army , but nothing that comes out of hollywood is the exact happening , if they didn't dress it up some no one would ever go to the movies , nothing anyone can do to change that .. ..

Two more movies that are based on fact was THE DEVILS BRIGADE , and THE LONGEST DAY .
The Devils Brigade was based on the forming of a special attack force of American and Canadian forces that never retreated once in their history of combat , quite a story when you read their history ..

Thats what I mean, hollywood dresses everything up, but in this case you have the actual guy. I obviously don't know how modest he was, but I could see him refusing to do some scenes which were over the top...It just makes me belive (rightly or not) that this makes To Hell and Back a very honest depiction.

The Devils Brigade did their training in Helena, MT where my Grandfather was out of and lived. My Father has told me stories that were told to him by my Grandfather who served in the great war about the two groups of men, The Canadian's sent their best and brightest while we sent our flunkies. My Grandfather said he was real impressed with the way the Canadians acted and carried themselves and id really helped the Americans. He did note that the Americans were a pretty rowdy bunch. My Grandfather never talked about the war but did talk a bit about training and before he was shipped over to the ETO.

I had three uncles that where with the Brigade (two where killed) , the third one would sit and talk to me about his experiences with the Brigade because I was also a member of the special forces when in the army , funny thing , I was the only one he ever told anything to .
He also told me the Americans picked for the training half of them came from various stockades where they were serving time for a variety of crimes , the brawl with the lumber jacks in the movie was all BS , the brawl did happen , but it was with local toughs , it was started by the Americans and finished by the Canadians , that brawl did bring both forces together as a unit ..
