I saw Lincoln over the weekend. What an amazing performance by Daniel Day-Lewis. One of the greatest actors of our time for sure.
I really liked that the movie kept up a good pace despite being a 2 hour, 30 minute political drama. I was afraid the movie was going to drag in some spots and/or get bogged down with way too much political drivel. Well, there is a lot of political dialogue, as the plot centers around Lincoln's struggle to pass the 13th Amendment. However, it keep up a good pace and remains more or less in layman's terms for people who don't follow politics too closely. The dialogue is witty in many spots and there is some decent humor, even if it has a 19th century tinge to it. I will definitely be buying this on video, and I recommend it to anyone who either enjoys American history, biopics, or great acting performances.

I missed all the orginal hype but I finally saw The Hunger Games. I liked it. I thought it was going to be another Romeo and Juliet when the two lovers were going to poison themselves. Bad guys get defeated as usual. I now wanna read the book.

Killing Them Softly
Saw it earlier tonight. Wasn't sure whether to put it in this thread or the 'meh' thread, but I'm not a tough critic so in here it goes. Brad Pitt was great, as was expected of him in a role like this. The violence was grisly and brutal (not Saw-esque, but it was pretty up there for an action flick). What I didn't like about it was that the whole movie moved very slowly. It wasn't even 2 hours long, but the scenes felt like they took forever. Another thing I did not like was the constant background dialogue of Obama & GW. I understand how it tied in with the plot of the movie, but they just overdid it. Every time there was a TV or radio in the setting, I had to listen to their goddamn speeches. Overall, I'd give it a B/B-.

Flight: first twenty minutes of the film is amoung the best I have ever seen in a movie.
but then the movie digresses into a movie designed to win Denzel an Oscar. so contrived and predictable. the usual bullshiit drama speech at the end. But overall a good movie. |
