IndyCar anyone?

Racing is finally coming to Baltimore in the form of an open-wheel street coarse and I couldn't be more stoked. As old as this city is, it's never seen 2 dozen vehicles approaching 200MPH on it's streets. The event is scheduled for Sept 4, and there should be a ton of things happening that (Labor Day) weekend. The only problem I have is that I know very little about the modern racing series. Luckily I have time to learn, but any advice/info from youse* guys would be appreciated.

I was a volunteer for four molson indy's in Toronto. An absolute blast and the passes I got where all access. I could go between the fence and the Jensen barrier where the trackworkers are. Take pictures and video where the media holes are in the fences , the cars would come around corners and the rubber coming off the tires would bounce of my back and arms, amazing experience. These cars can accelerate!!!! The smell of the fuel, sound of the engines just a great time. Enjoy!!!!!

Watched some of the race this past weekend. Kind of fun these guys having twenty 'boosts' for twelve seconds. I'd rather watch NASCAR though because rubbin is racin.

I'm not sure where I'm going to position myself on the track, as there are a whole bunch of places to view from. There are so many tall buildings (not really skyscrapers) that line the route, there's gotta be some "rooftop parties" going on during the race, but being down on street level is my goal. Volunteering is an excellent idea BTW. Thanks!

I was able to catch the rough beginning (9 of the first 13 laps under caution?) but it's the start of the season, so I think the drivers were a bit rusty. I'm going to watch as many races as I can, but between nice summer days, hockey playoffs, and a rejuvenated Orioles club it may be difficult.

Mojo Pockets, if you should happen to gain access to the pits on race weekend, could you snag me a pair of Danica Patrick's panties? Thanks, in advance.

If possible, but she might be a bit difficult. I may have to set my sights on Simona de Silvestro - she may not be the media icon that Danica is (yet), but I hear she's "faster" (see last weeks race results), and she already likes Bawldimore.

That broad can drive, I was impressed last week. Too bad Milka Duno didn't get a ride this year, Love her rack, can't drive for **** though.

I've never been in person, always wanted to but never had the chance, but I watch it whenever I get a chance. Franchitti is the ****, also watch for Will Power, Tony Kanaan, Castroneves and Ryan Briscoe. ALL those guys can drive their asses off.

Best thing Indy Car and CART did was merge. Since then the racing has been much better, the talent is better, the stands are fuller. The sport is back on the upswing as well. Looking forward to the 500, that is going to be an incredible race this year.

Wow, what a horrible accident in IRL today. I hope Dan Wheldon is ok, tarps coming out are never good, no matter what happens though that was the worst accident I have seen in any racing series ever. Even tops any NASCAR wreck, even Dale's death.

EDIT:
Quote:
Details are still fuzzy, but it appears Indy 500 winner Dan Wheldon has been badly injured in a crash on Lap 10 of the 2011 IZOD IndyCar Series finale at Las Vegas that involved between 14 and 15 cars.

It is believed that Sam Schmidt Motorsports/AFS Racing driver Wade Cunningham triggered the crash after making wheel-to-wheel contact with Marco Andretti. Cunningham spun and collected Charlie Kimball, and with cars sliding broadside at over 200 mph, major crashes, cars going airborne and big fires filling Turn 2 and the back straight, the series threw the red flag to tend to the injured drivers and commence the big cleanup that's necessary.

James Jakes, Vitor Meira, Wade Cunningham, JR Hildebrand, Townsend Bell, Jay Howard, Tomas Scheckter, Charlie Kimball, Paul Tracy, EJ Viso, Dan Wheldon, Alex Lloyd, Pippa Mann, Will Power and Buddy Rice were all taken out in the crash, with Wheldon's condition being the greatest concern amongst the drivers.

"I saw two cars touch in front of me and couldn’t slow down," said Tracy. "Dan [Wheldon], from what I saw, came over me. It was a horrendous accident. It’s going to be a long recovery. It’s a bad situation."

Team Penske's Ryan Briscoe, who wasn't involved in the wreck but drove through the carnage the following lap, was startled by what he witnessed.

"It looks like a war scene from Terminator with parts of cars on fire not attached to anything," he said.
