I don't think he did. I for one find it refreshing that SOMEONE in sports will tell it as they see it. Is Dana White always right? No, of course not but at least he doesn't hide behind stupid cliches all the time. Do you see anything wrong with what couture did?

Well if in fact there's some, or even a lot, of validity to what Dana said Randy did, then sure. Hell yes even.
Trust me, I'd be the last person to give Randy a free pass for the rest of his life because of the accomplishments and contributions he's made to the sport. At some point accountability has to kick in, no one should be exempt from being called on their ****. Randy Couture is not a God. He's not Royce Gracie....but he's sure as hell not Frank Shamrock. In all likelyhood Dana will welcome back Randy in 5-10 years, as even a guy like Tito Ortiz has recieved numerous second chances. Maybe Randy felt there were just too many restrictions being placed on him. Who's to say Bellator doesn't become a contender....then again Randy did get involved with Affliction and Bodog fights Dana constantly wants to sing the praises and celebrate Chuck "The Iceman" Liddell the fighter, not to mention the 'company man' attitude he brought to the UFC. But who were some of Chuck's most lucrative and most entertaining fights? Tito Ortiz and Randy Couture. Mostly he just smashed guys. That is until he became punch drunk, or Just Drunk, and then started getting KO'd at a drop of a hat. That said he'll have a job with the company for the rest of his life. That also probably applies to guys like GSP, Rich Franklin, Forrest Griffin, Kenny Florian and even a guy like Stephen Bonnar. Last edited by Humpzilla; 02-05-2013 at 02:31 PM. |

Alright, let's get this Randy discussion going...
Was Dana a little harsh? Definitely. Regardless of what happens, Couture is a hall-of-famer. One of the best of all-time. Left us with countless memories over the years. His suplex of Chuck at UFC 43. Him dropping Tim Sylvia in the first 15 seconds at UFC 68. You can go on and on. Here's where it gets tough. Dana slammed Randy as a person outside of the cage. However in the cage, he said he has the utmost respect for him. Randy outside of the cage - not the best. Dana's right. And I hate to ever talk bad about anyone, but this stuff is already out there anyway. Also, for the record, I'm not defending the UFC or Dana. I have my own opinions about Dana. While I respect him as a promoter with an edge and everything he has done for the sport, I disagree with his lack of professionalism and comments at times. Let's not forget about what happened in '07 with Couture trying to leave the UFC just because he wanted to fight Fedor. Same thing happened in '98 when he realized that Japan was where the money was. He's been divorced three times. He wasn't a major part of Ryan Couture's life until the past few years. There's a reason why Evan Tanner left Team Quest and a reason why Dan Henderson left to start his own gym in California. There's a reason why a mass exodus occurred at Xtreme Couture over the past year. As a fighter, Randy is one of the best to ever compete. As a person, I'm certainly not one to judge, but from what I've heard and read over the years I've been in this thing, he's not so much.

I think a lot of people are quick to defend Randy because of the "Captain America" moniker and the fact that on camera he comes across as such a good guy.
After watching him on UFC broadcasts, interviews and on TUF he really seems like a good guy. Dana is a dick, but at least he doesn't pretend to be anything different.

The UFC Hall of Famer’s contract is with Spike TV, and just happens to include being a coach on the “Fight Master: Bellator MMA” reality show. In fact, all of the coaches’ deals are with Spike TV.
“I have to clarify that because my deal is with Spike. It’s for TV shows, both scripted and unscripted potential shows. I’ve never been to Bellator. That was the first time I’ve ever met Bjorn (Rebney), was at the press conference, so I’m not involved in any way, shape, or form with Bellator, just to clarify that,” Couture told Knockout Radio, an MMAWeekly.com official content partner. “My deal is to train athletes for this reality show that will get the opportunity to fight in the tournament for Bellator, and that’s about the extent of my commitment, at least at this stage of things, with the organization and the promotion of Bellator,” Couture added. “I think that is a distinction that is largely misunderstood and maybe lost on Dana (White). He’s not one for details. But at the end of the day, that’s the reality of it.” |
