Ice Flyers Sign John Dunbar
Pensacola, Fla. - The Pensacola Ice Flyers have announced that head coach Gary Graham has signed rookie forward John Dunbar for the 2012-13 season.
The Calgary, Alberta native joins the Ice Flyers after a very successful junior career, where he started with his hometown Calgary Canucks of the Alberta Junior Hockey League (AJHL) and finished with the Fort McMurray Oil Barons of the same league. As a 17-year-old, Dunbar scored 27 goals, added 27 assists for 54 points in 62 games. He increased his point production the following season, scoring 28 goals with 52 assists for 80 points in just 56 games as an 18-year-old. "I'm very excited to be given the opportunity to play professional hockey in Pensacola. I have heard nothing but wonderful things about the fan support and tight-knit community that surrounds the Ice Flyers," Dunbar stated. "I'm eager to bring in my creative offensive abilities and competitive edge in order to help the Ice Flyers to a championship this season." He earned a Division I scholarship to play for Quinnipiac University of the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC), and after two season there, he returned to the AJHL and the Oil Barons to finish the season. Dunbar had 38 points in 41 regular season and playoff games while helping lead the Oil Barons to the 2012 AJHL Enerflex Cup Finals. "John is an electrifying hockey player that has game-changing speed in the open ice and tremendous creativity with the puck," Graham commented. "He has a knack for scoring and setting up big goals. I see John playing in a variety of situations this season, especially with an extra attacker."
