Randy Moss: The Greatest of All-Time?
He says so, but what do you guys think?
While I truly believe he is the most physically gifted receiver to ever play the game (Megatron may have an argument), there is no way I can place him over Jerry Rice at No.1 - based on an overall body of work. I'd go: 1 Rice 2 Largent 3 Moss 4 Irvin 5 Alworth |

Absolutely not. I think that statement alone is laughable.

There's a whole heap of receivers that "could have been" the greatest. There's also a whole heap of receivers that were more talented than Rice. But he's on top of the mountain because of one thing; hard work.
1. Rice. 2-infinity. Everyone else. Moss was probably the best deep threat of all time if he really needs to be the "greatest" at something. |

BTW, Just for the hell of it I just look at Hutson vs Moss and what a joke that is!
Moss has 5 black numbers for leading the NFL in TD's 5 times in 14 years! That is it! He NEVER lead in catches! He NEVER lead in yards/catch! Now get this with Hutson! He played 11 years from 1935-45 and his numbers are so dominate! Most catches 8 times in 11 years! Most yards 7 times in 11 years! Most td's 9 times in 11 years! Hutson also found time to intercept 30 passes and kick field goals and extra point! The 3 years when he didn't have the most receptions he finished 2nd twice and 6th as a rookie! The 4 years that he didn't have the most receiving yards he finished 2nd twice, 3rd once, and fourth once! The 2 years when he didn't score the most td's he finished in 2nd place! Talk about dominance! Hutson scored 99 tds in 116 games in a run dominated NFL and the T-Formation wasn't really used until around 1939 or 1940 by the Bears! As great as Rice was he only scored 197 tds in 303 games! If Hutson had played in 303 games and kept his pace, he would of scored 259 tds! Don Hutson's numbers in his era were off the charts dominate! Randy Moss needs to bow to Don Hutson who had dominate numbers like Babe Ruth in baseball for chrissakes!

bigjack you forgot one thing: back when hutson played the defense was allowed to really defend. no PI calls if you touched the untouchable, no mel blount rule. Jerry Rice had the mel blount rule in effect for the whole of his career
i'd even put Lance Alworth in before moss, right after rice and hutson who are 1b and 1 a in my mind. i've watched quite a bit of Lance Alworth game film. he took some shots- had moss been hit like he did.... and numba 84, sterling sharpe is on my list too. i loved his play. his time was cut short

There was no dink and dunk and west coast offense in Sammy's day and he was almost 57% for his career! Mark Sanchez can't hit 57% now for chrissakes he is so bad! Imagine Tom Brady playing defense and being the best punter in the league also? Baugh averaged over 45 yards a punt over his career! The 1960's was vicious football but before that was really nuts with all the cheapshots and not being considered down until you were almost dead! Alworth played in the vicious 1960's and had great hands! It's why you can't look at today's numbers with the wideopen everything goes passing attacks vs pre 1974! It was a totally different game and the goal post at the goal line was used as a weapon and ploy to injure players! Joe Namath talked one time about how the defense could really manhandle the receivers all over the field and the QB was hit about 4 seconds after he released the passes! Art Donovan always told the story about hitting Van Brocklin in LA one time about 5 seconds after he threw the ball and the referee said Art you are getting close now watch it! Now you breathe on the QB and it's 15 yards!

Here is the Top 10 for Receiving TD's and every guy is a post 1974 player where they started to change the rules to open the game up except for Don Hutson who is still at number 9 and he only played in 116 games and also intercepted 30 passes playing defense!
