I don't see Sparty having a solid year through the Big 10. I see the defense winning a couple games for them, and I see Ball being able to run over a few defenses, but when it gets down to Ohio State, Michigan, Iowa, Penn State, Wisconsin and Nebraska - it won't be good enough (or whatever teams they play this year).
Let me get my homer goggles activated...

I mean I don't wanna paint a picture that isn't there but I wouldn't say it was luck. The only reason it was indeed close was because MSU shot themselves in the foot all game. That was a very one-sided affair. If Maxwell wasn't throwing behind receivers who thought they were vollelyball players it would've shown on the scoreboard.

Sure Bell and the oline won't behind to run downhill as easily in the Big10 and the passing game will need to step up but that defense is stout.

They're built right, just gotta work out some kinks.

And a side to the other Sparty fans here, is it just me or is MSU the only team in the world that can have an opening drive as clean and dominating as they had against BSU then do the exact OPPOSITE the next gazillion times they have the ball until like the 3rd quarter?? It's football, you do something UNTIL it doesn't work. Not once and say "What the hell? That worked well, but let's try something entirely different!"

He actually did have 44 carries. Time of possession was just so lopsided that even with that, Maxwell still had to throw 38 times. Even when he was throwing away it seemed to be wobbling all over the place. Granted it was his first start and I hated Cousins when he first started, which ended up pretty well.

While I don't think State will go 10-2 again this year, none of the other Big 10 teams scare me much, so who knows.

Florida State lost a potential All American defensive end in game 1. They've got amazing depth on the defensive side of the ball, but losing Brandon Jenkins is a MASSIVE loss. A guy that can change the course of a game all on his own with stuffing the run or the pass.
I'm so tired of hearing that Boise was young, inexperienced and small. That was a badge of honor when they were putting L's in the column of Geargia and Va Tech. Hogwash, State lost the winningest qb in sparty history, top two wr's, TE and a all world nose tackle.

Both teams were evenly damaged by the draft and state came out and got the win. Take it for what it is, Sparty dominated the game in terms of total yardage, forst downs and so on. 90 yards in penalties and some key turnovers made it close.

Really michigan, Iowa, Penn State....... take a look at what bell did in the conference games last year. He only averaged 5.4 yards per carry and scorched a few of those teams. Michigan is due for a win, but Sparty makes it 5 years in row this October 20th.

the only reason they beat vatech was because vatechs defense that year started nothing but freshman. since kellen moore and doug martin graduated i dont see boise doing anything for a few years. They do have great coaching tho

All sorts of things wrong with Wisconsin today. Danny O'Brien has a pick and a fumble. Not the best play calling either. Thank god for the little bit of defense they had. Ugly day...

Not sure if any of you have seen the video of the Tulane S, Devon Walker getting in on a tackle, and going top of the head into the forehead of a teammate. Broke his neck and collapsed a lung.

Might be in this link.

Wow that's just tough luck, a wrong place at the wrong time sort of football injury. I was all set to assume he injured himself trying to get himself on ESPN with a dangerous hit. Obviously not the case. Good luck to him in recovering so he can live a normal life. He may never play football again.

An Arkansas player also had a helmet to helmet collision and was taken off on a stretcher a little while ago.

Scary to see those plays happen and possibly put these kids in wheelchairs for life.

Tulane's Walker injured in collision, taken off field in ambulance

TULSA, Okla. (AP) -- Tulane safety Devon Walker fractured his spine in a head-to-head collision with a teammate during a game in Tulsa, the team doctor said Saturday.

Dr. Buddy Savoie said during a postgame news conference that Walker is in stable condition and will need spinal surgery in the "the next day or two."

"He was stable when we transported him," Savoie said. "I do not think, based on the information we have, his life was ever in danger."

Tulsa was leading 35-3 and facing a fourth-and-2 with the ball at the 33-yard line when the Golden Hurricane called timeout. Tulane then called timeout.

When play resumed, Tulsa quarterback Cody Green tossed a short pass to Willie Carter, who caught it at about the 28, and turned upfield. He was tackled around the 18-yard line, with defensive tackle Julius Warmsley and Walker sandwiching him and apparently smashing the crowns of their helmets into each other.

Medical personnel from both teams came out about 12:37 p.m. to attend to Walker as he lay on the field.

Savoie said after the game that Walker "actually never completely lost consciousness" and was breathing.

About 12:52 p.m., he was lifted onto a stretcher and loaded into a waiting ambulance about two minutes later. The ambulance drove off the field about 1 p.m.

FOX Sports reported a hush went over the crowd at H.A. Stadium as Walker was attended to on the field, and that several coaches were in tears. Spectators bowed their heads as someone on the field led the stadium in prayer.

The game resumed at 1:20 p.m.

Walker is a senior majoring in cell and molecular biology. His brother, Raynard, told The Associated Press that their mother was watching the game on television when her son was injured.

Tulane head coach Curtis Johnson said after the 45-10 loss that while Walker was on the field, Johnson told Walker that he was praying for him and that help was on the way.

He said the mood among players was somber, and called the day his most difficult ever.
