NCAA College Football 2012

This is a pretty big deal although I doubt that the champions from each conference will actually meet up too often.

(AP) -- The Big 12 and the Southeastern conferences have announced a deal that will pit their football regular-season champions against each other in a New Year's Day bowl game for five years beginning in 2014, positioning themselves for the expected switch to a four-team playoff.

In fact, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive all but said it's coming in Friday's announcement of the agreement between two of the most successful BCS conferences.

"A new January bowl tradition is born," Slive said in a statement. "This new game will provide a great matchup between the two most successful conferences in the BCS era and will complement the exciting postseason atmosphere created by the new four-team model. Most importantly, it will provide our student-athletes, coaches and fans with an outstanding bowl experience."

If one or both of the league champions are selected to play in the playoff, another team would be selected for the Big 12-SEC bowl showdown on Jan. 1.

The move will establish the equivalent of the Pac 12 vs. Big Ten Rose Bowl, minus nearly a century of tradition. Those two conferences have pushed for a new format preserving that matchup for the Rose Bowl, which Slive has indicated he doesn't favor.

"Our goal is to provide the fans across the country with a New Year's Day prime-time tradition," acting Big 12 Conference Commissioner Chuck Neinas said. "This is a landmark agreement between two of the most successful football conferences during the BCS era to stage a postseason event. The creation of this game featuring the champions of the Big 12 and SEC will have tremendous resonance in college football."

Specific details for the matchup, including host sites, will be announced later.

BCS executive director Bill Hancock has said 11 conference commissioners and Notre Dame's athletic director will present a "small number" of options - two to seven configurations - for a four-team playoff to their leagues at conference meetings this summer.

SEC teams have won the past six BCS national titles, including Alabama's victory over LSU in January. The Big 12 and SEC have each had a top-four team in the final standings in 11 of the 14 seasons since the BCS was created, the most of any league. They share the top spot with 14 teams apiece finishing in one of those four spots.

Yeah SEC and Big 12 Champion would almost always be in the top 4 if the playoff route ends up happening. So this is basically the number 2 teams in each conference playing each other. Basically a glorified Cotton Bowl

Well it's official but looks like it will be two seasons away.

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Playoffs and tournaments long have determined champions of every college sport from baseball to bowling.

The exception was major college football.

That ended Tuesday. Come 2014, the BCS is dead.

A committee of university presidents approved a plan for a four-team playoff put forward by commissioners of the top football conferences.

The new system doesn't go too far, Virginia Tech President Charles W. Steger said.

"It goes just the right amount," he said.

The move completes a six-month process for the commissioners, who have been working on a new way to determine a major college football champion after years of griping from fans. The latest configuration is certain to make even more money for the schools than the old system.

"There were differences of views," Steger said. "I think it would be a serious mistake to assume it was a rubber stamp."

Instead of simply matching the nation's No. 1 and No. 2 teams in a title game after the regular season, the way the Bowl Championship Series has done since 1998, the new format will create a pair of national semifinals.

College football fans have been clamoring for a playoff for years, and the BCS has been a constant target for criticism. Lawmakers have railed against it. A political action committee was formed, dedicated to its destruction. The Justice Department looked into whether it broke antitrust laws. Even President Obama said he wanted a playoff.

Now it's a reality.

No. 1 will play No. 4, and No. 2 will play No. 3 on Dec. 31 and Jan. 1. The sites of those games will rotate among the four current BCS bowls - Rose, Orange, Fiesta and Sugar - and two more to be determined.

The winners will advance to the championship on the first Monday in January that is six or more days after the last semifinal. The first championship Monday is set for Jan. 12, 2015.

The site of the title game will move around the way the Super Bowl does, with cities bidding for the right to host.

if there was a playoff system this past season, my Pokes would've been National Champs.

Good chance that would have happened. We at least could have seen Alabama and LSU play against a good offense and see whether their D was as good as they said it was.

Until you realize that they influence the rankings througout the whole season...

Anyways, glad to see Notre Dame on there, as always

And I think Oregon is way too high, but we will see how they have reloaded.

Again, 5 SEC teams in the top-10, so they can tell us all how hard their strength of schedule is.

Very true.

Every year it's the same old same old. You know an SEC team will be near the top, if not the top and it's essentially the same 25 teams year in-year out.

I haven't been following college football too much, but what happened to Ohio State?

I remember hearing how they got in some trouble a while back (something to do with illegal gifts or money or something). Is that why they're ranked in the top 25?

I guess they just don't have a highly touted team this year. They got into trouble for some players trading football stuff for gifts..don't know if they got any bowl ban, but this is the AP poll, and would have them regardless (AP still had USC last year etc.).
