I think you mean Chris Wenke, White was only 23 when he won it. But you are right, it is never really the winners fault, especially with games available 24/7. At least back in the day voters could claim that they could only see certain teams. I also remember when Ed Marinaro who played for Cornell finished in the top 3 I believe. He was actually the runner up to Pat Sullivan, go figure. Was he the second best player in college football that year, no way.

I guess the issue is college football is much different from the NFL. Certain players can excel in the NCAA, but just aren't cut out for the pros. And the award goes to the best college player, not the player that will be best in the NFL |

Correct, I thought I edited my spelling but didn't, he also played in Super Bowls VIII and IX for the Vikes. I also saw after a little reading that also in the running that year was a guy named Johnny Musso of Alabama. I have memories of that season (1971) but being only 11 at the time they aren't too sharp and are kind of scattered.
