I can't really say I dislike the whole thing, because the NCAA is trying to set precedent, but is penalizing them the way they did really going to prevent another Jerry Sandusky from happening? No. Punish someone or in this case, a school, won't prevent it elsewhere. Penn State did deserve to be punished severely though. The $60 million fine thing, as jkidd said, is kind of a joke. The team generates that alone in a single season. The scholarship reduction is what is really going to hurt them. Penn State isn't going to be a powerhouse for probably a decade because of this, but everyone kind of predicted that anyway. The thing I find screwy, but I understand why they did it, is vacating 111 wins. I know it was done to further diminish JoePa's legacy and reduce him to 8th all-time in FBS wins,...but really? It's in the past, you can't change the games. The only place anybody is going to notice a difference is the record book. I was at the games and know the outcome, so do the players. So I don't getting the vacating wins thing. I don't get it here, or where they do it elsewhere (FSU for example). The games are over with, so in my mind nothing changes. Even for Paterno, the new number 1 in FBS victories will always have a "yeah he has the most wins, but not really." Penn State will probably suffer for a while, but I guarantee you the fans won't turn on the school. Come September 1st, Beaver Stadium will be packed with 100,000+ fans as always. Time to move on from all of this and rebuild what we once had.

its not just b/c of 2 or 3 guilty men, its b/c of the entire culture of penn state revolved around the football program.

I hear you, but you've got nail down the specific people whose actions created and/or propagated that culture. Then you put'em in front of a judge and a jury; prosecute them to the fullest extent of the law.

The school and the DA should get together and appoint a joint special task force to ascertain who/what/when/where/how. Then it should purge the implicated school and football admin members and/or indict them under the applicable criminal laws. Presumably, the football program would be crippled by the loss of key staff members. Same for the school. That should be it. That way, you punish the people responsible for committing the crime, and you don't punish people who have nothing to do with the crime.

I just think it's as much of an injustice to punish innocent people as it is to perpetrate crimes against innocent people. You disagree. I get it.

29th -

It really comes down to this with the NCAA, they took the easy way out - as they always do.

Option 1- Ban them from post season play and championship games. Very little work to do other than announce it.

Option 2- Tell them they can keep playing in the post season and championship, but they don't get any revenue for those games.

Option two requires a lot of work. A lot of work the NCAA doesn't want to do. To my knowledge, they didn't even launch their own investigation, they just went off the internal investigation from PSU.

So lazy they gave President Mark Emmert powers to personally levy the penalties rather than launch their own investigation.

IMO, that's what it comes down to.

I hate the NCAA, don't get me wrong, but I think Lazy is the wrong word here. I think they just wanted to distance themselves as much as possible from this mess...

I only know the basics here. Did a whole bunch of people know about what happened? Why are they destroying the program?

The ridiculous thing is folks around here (I live about 2 hours from State College) still seem in denial about Paterno, and are complaining that the penalty is too strong. It is all that is on the news as you can see below.

http://wnep.com/2012/07/23/strong-reactions-on-campus/

Who would want to admit that they go to school there, or worse yet, pay a couple hundred bucks to chant "We Are Penn State" at the games? I would be so embarrased to say I want to cheer for a team from an institution whose leadership supported a child rapist and covered things up that I wouldn't be caught dead wearing one of their shirts or hats.

I say shut down all the sports as no one who supports the school seems to think that the program got too big an powerful.

Everyone from Paterno up to the AD knew about it, and have systematically covered it up for over a decade.

Not to mention Mike McQuery obviously knew about it, plus whoever he might have told. Janitors walked in on this, so the janitorial staff knew and whoever they told. One of the instances was reported to the campus police so they had known something. It sounds to me that there were definitely a few powerful people covering this up hard core. But I think there was also a wider circle of people who knew/suspected/rumored as well. Overall not a good scene.

Punish the people involved in the coverup but why punish the kids now who are either students and or players? They had nothing to do with all of this crap and neither did the new coaching staff or all the small businesses that rely on alot of their revenue from Penn State!
Yesterday's ruling sucked!
They are hurting many innocent people and that is ridiculous!
Why not have a brain and make a policy that Penn State can play in Bowl games and that money goes to the victims?

sandusky ruined the lives of 10(and possibly more) innocent children, what a disgrace.

the NCAA ruling can ruin the lives of 10's of thousands of innocent people, also a disgrace.
