BCS recommends four team Playoff

This is big

HOLLYWOOD, Fla. (AP) -- College football is on the verge of finally having a playoff, its own version of the final four.

For the first time, all the power brokers who run the highest level of the sport are comfortable with the idea of deciding a championship the way it's done from pee-wees to pros. And the way fans have been hoping they would for years.

"Yes, we've agreed to use the P word," Pac-12 Commissioner Larry Scott said Thursday.

They want to limit it to four teams. That's for sure. Now they have to figure out how to pick the teams, where and when to play the games and how the bowls do or do not fit in. The new postseason format would go into effect for the 2014 season.

As for the 14-year-old Bowl Championship Series, it's on life support. Any chance that it survives past the next two seasons? "I hope not," said Southeastern Conference Commissioner Mike Slive, who pitched a four-team playoff four years ago but was shot down at this same hotel beachside hotel.

'Playoff'

Its still just the big boys making sure they are the only ones who can get in.

Yep, but still an improvement. They are ridiculous though. They are very much like the US government.

Oh definitely an improvement, no argument there! I just feel this is being thrown out there and will be their excuse to not have a real playoff, because they already have one! I didn't watch the 'championship' game this year, but I would have watched them if this was in place.

It's big.

But, it's not big enough.

Lets just go there.

An 8 team, or even a 10 team (two teams getting a bye in the first round), system would be perfect.

ACC
Big East
Big 10
Big 12
Pac-12
Southeastern

Then 2 spots for teams not from those divisions, and two spots for "selection" only spots from the AP or BCS computer rankings.

Don't the lower divisions have 16 team playoffs? Why not just go there already.

Damn! Even I would say that is a bit much for a football playoff!

16 is an ideal number. But, that's a lot of football for "students" and it does take away from the importance of the regular season games where 1 loss can literally cost you everything.

That part of college football, I want to keep intact. And that's why I think 10 teams would be perfect.

Yeah its a lot of games, but honestly it has nothing to do with being too much for 'students'. As is pointed out every other division in college football has even more than 16! Its about keeping 2-3 patsy games that will sell out the stadium and make big $$.

And I don't agree with you on the one loss thing, that is not true for any other sport, why so for college football? Though I realize this is just personal preference.

Plus 1, or four teams, is fine with me. I like the importance of the regular season.
