Tigers sign OF Torii Hunter

Quote:
Free-agent outfielder Torii Hunter has reached agreement on a two-year, $26 million deal with the Detroit Tigers pending a physical exam, a baseball source said Wednesday.

Hunter, 37, is a .277 hitter with 297 home runs and nine Gold Gloves in 14 seasons with the Minnesota Twins and Los Angeles Angels.

He hit .313 with the Angels in 2012, but his five-year, $90 million contract expired after the season, and the Angels declined to make him a $13.3 million qualifying offer. That means the Tigers are not obligated to give the Angels draft-pick compensation in exchange for signing Hunter.

Tigers get even better with this trade. Two years deal is a good length for Hunter's age. As the article says, having Cabrera, Fielder, Martinez, and Hunter in the same lineup will make make them the second most feared team in the AL after the 27 world champions team...

Damn! Great pickup for the Tigers. I am sure leftie's happy with this. He's a solid player that will provide some good veteran presence in the dugout.

So this guy will make more than, say, Sidney Crosby ever has or will in a season - at 39 years old? Is there that much revenue in baseball, or is the system that messed up?

And, yes, it's rhetorical... I'm fully aware of how insane MLB contracts are. Talk about a sport that needs a good CBA, jeez.

Anyway, good deal for the Tigers. They are the new Yankees, their trades don't ever seem to pan out, but they can sure spend some money.

Yep I'm happy with Hunter but I think he might be a touch overpaid. Having said that he is a upgrade for sure. I watched him kill the Tigers for years wearing a Twins uni so happy he is wearing the old english D.

Hey illitch, start spending some friggin moola on that atrocious bullpen and I will be super h appy.
