I guess two Gold Gloves in the last three years is slightly above average defense now?

Kevin Youkolis went longer than he did. In the same two seasons. By almost 50 games.

I think he meant second basemen. But regardless it's an impressive feat.

We picked up Ross Gload to round out the bench. He killed us a couple times on the Marlins this year. So that's Schneider, Castro, and Gload replacing Stairs, Bruntlett, and Bako. Considerable upgrade I would say.

Also, according to the little pecker Ken Rosenthal, Ruben is looking at Brandon Lyon for long relief.

Roy Haladay sweepstakes are back on, he'll have a new team by the beginning of the year, or else he'll nix any deals afterwards.

Apparently Phils are stil front-runners, but now they are asking for Happ and Brown or Taylor, what do you guys think?

To many lefties. We are going to have to get rid of one of them, might as well get A great proven righty in return. My only consern is parting with Brown.

I thought Ruben said the Phillies weren't persuing Halladay? Or that it wasn't a reality for Halladay to come to Philly? Something along those lines.

Either way, I'm not sure I like picking up Halladay. It just seems like the Phillies have everything to lose by trading Happ and Brown/Taylor. We're not going to be able to keep both Lee and Halladay after this season, so why trade our best young pitcher and best outfield prospect, on top of whoever else Toronto demands? We're going to need Brown and/or Taylor within a year or two to replace Ibanez. No doubt Halladay would be a great addition, but this seems like it would backfire. Happ did a hell of a job this season, and lost out on rookie of the year by what, nine points? Say we trade him for Halladay, then Roy leaves next winter to persue big money that isn't available in Philly. We are out Happ, Halladay, and a blue chip outfielder. At LEAST.

Edit: good move since Halladay signed an extension through 2013, possibly 2014. Can't wait to this guy pitch.

I guess Phillies fans should get used to hearing this during the season but I'm tired of hearing reporters bring up Matt Holliday and Jason Bay when they ask Jayson Werth what he's going to do after his contract expires this season. Jayson has been mum on the issue and has said he loves playing here. These f*cking reporters are asking if he'll test the open market at the end of the year, citing Bay and Holliday's new contracts this year. Okay...Bay and Holliday were both grossly overpaid and the Mets and Cardinals are going to have those bums and their contracts hanging around their necks for years. I don't think it's fair to the Phillies or Werth to be using those two guys as examples for how much money Werth could fetch on the market. Werth is a very important part of our team but it's assinine for these press morons to essentially tell him he could get a 7 year, $120 million contract from some poor sucker team with sh!tty fukkin management.

If somebody convinces Werth that he deserves more than the grossly overpaid bums Bay and Holliday, the likelihood of Werth playing elsewhere next year is extremely high.

If Werth leaves Philly there is no doubt that his numbers will drop. No doubt that Citizens Bank Park has helped Werth boost his numbers. Just look at how his numbers shot up in Philly.

I just want to say I don't want Cole Hamels to make any more stupid remarks and I also want to see the guy get his fastball and change-up back to what it was before last year!

Werth has been battling a wrist injury most of his career. He really didn't get a chance to play full time until he got to Philly.

I think barring injury Werth is good for at least 30 home runs a year playing on any team. He's got mad power, I remember Ryan Howard saying Werth was hitting the slide in the Brewer's stadium in BP. Citizen's Bank is obviously a hitter's park but Werth knocks the sh*t out of a lot of his homers, I recall a ton from last year were to straight away center.

Woah!

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4994845

Quote:
It's the sort of thing that is much more likely to happen in fantasy baseball than in real life, but according to sources, an idea has been kicked around the Phillies' organization internally, with discussions about proposing a swap of slugger Ryan Howard for St. Louis superstar Albert Pujols.

It's not fully clear whether the Phillies actually have approached the Cardinals with the idea, and even if St. Louis were to seriously consider such an offer, executives with the Cardinals would have to swallow very hard before dealing Pujols, a player widely regarded as the best in the sport.

Phillies general manager Ruben Amaro flatly denied that the internal discussions have taken place. "Lies," he said. "That's a lie. I don't know who you're talking to, but that's a lie."

The talk may well echo, in the end, another blockbuster deal that was discussed but never consummated many years ago: Executives of the Red Sox and Yankees once famously discussed a trade of Ted Williams for Joe DiMaggio.

The logic for a Howard for Pujols swap, as discussed within the Phillies' organization, could fall along these lines: Pujols, 30 years old, is eligible for free agency after the 2011 season, and early conversations about a contract extension have not led to any long-term deal. The expectation within baseball is that Pujols may ask for a deal that would rival, in annual value, the record-setting 10-year, $275 million deal that Alex Rodriguez negotiated with the Yankees in fall 2007.

If the Cardinals were to decide, at any point, that they could not afford to sign Pujols, they could consider dealing him, in the way the Toronto Blue Jays traded Roy Halladay, or the Minnesota Twins traded Johan Santana.

And Howard, who is just a couple of months older than Pujols, would not be a bad alternative. In the past four seasons, Howard has hit 198 homers and accumulated 572 RBIs, and has finished in the top five of the NL MVP race.

Here's the public relations kicker: Howard was born in St. Louis, and is regarded as a hometown kid in that city.

Howard is under contract for each of the next two seasons as well -- for $19 million in 2010 and $20 million in 2011 -- as part of a three-year deal he signed last year. He would be more expensive than Pujols in each of the next two seasons, but on the other hand, he probably will not be as expensive to sign as Pujols in his next contract.

Pujols is a right-handed hitter who would help to balance a Philadelphia lineup that has been very left-handed, and he is regarded as a superior first baseman, as well as being the best hitter in the sport.

Pat Gillick, who preceded Amaro as general manager and is currently serving as an adviser, knows something about making out-of-the-box blockbusters.

Twenty years ago, as general manager of the Blue Jays, he stunned the baseball world by trading stars Tony Fernandez and Fred McGriff to the San Diego Padres for Joe Carter and Roberto Alomar.
