Well, if after a bad start, Dickey decides to forsake his knuckleball and start throwing only fastballs, I agree he'd be in a world of trouble.

Dickey has agreed to a 2-year, $25 million extension. Once he passes the physical, the deal is done.

Official: Mets trade Dickey, Thole, prospect to Toronto

TORONTO -- The long-rumoured deal that would send 2012 National League Cy Young Award winner R.A. Dickey from the Mets to Toronto is finally complete.

Toronto officially acquired Dickey, catcher Josh Thole and Minor League catcher Mike Nickeas in the seven-player trade that was announced Monday evening. The Mets received top catching prospect Travis d'Arnaud, right-hander Noah Syndergaard, catcher John Buck and Minor Leaguer Wuilmer Becerra.

The two teams came to terms over the weekend, but the deal was contingent on the Blue Jays and Dickey being able to agree to an extension. That happened Monday morning, when Toronto tore up the final year of Dickey's contract and signed him to a three-year contract valued at $29 million plus a club option worth $12 million in 2016.

"Now that it's official, I want to say that I don't have the words to express how grateful I am to you for the steadfast support and encouragement I received from all of you," Dickey wrote in a message to fans on Twitter. "I've always felt that there was a connection beyond the uniform.Thank you for making me feel wanted."

"Now that it's official, I want to say that I don't have the words to express how grateful I am to you for the steadfast support and encouragement I received from all of you," Dickey wrote in a message to fans on Twitter. "I've always felt that there was a connection beyond the uniform. Thank you for making me feel wanted."

Rumors surrounding the Blue Jays' interest in Dickey date back to the Winter Meetings, but really began to pick up steam Friday morning. That's when reports first began to surface that Toronto was willing to part with d'Arnaud, who previously had been viewed as being off limits.

Those rumours continued to swirl and the framework of the deal was leaked late Saturday night. Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos prefers to operate in the shadows but in this situation, he was forced to operate under the public spotlight as the merits of the trade were constantly debated all over social media.

The acquisition of Dickey continues a complete rebranding of the Blue Jays this offseason. Toronto, which is coming off a disappointing 73-89 season, recently made it a top priority to acquire a pair of front-line starting pitchers in order to become relevant in the American League East for the first time since 1993.

Not only did Anthopoulos achieve his goal, but he has now officially surpassed it. Dickey will join fellow recent recruits Josh Johnson and veteran Mark Buehrle, along with incumbents Brandon Morrow and Ricky Romero, to form one of the best rotations in baseball -- at least on paper.

BLUE JAYS OFFICIALLY ACQUIRE KNUCKLEBALLER DICKEY

Quote:
TORONTO -- The Toronto Blue Jays have officially acquired Cy Young winner R.A. Dickey, adding the 38-year-old knuckleballer to an improved starting rotation.

The New York Mets traded Dickey to Toronto for a package featuring prized young catcher Travis d'Arnaud.

The Blue Jays then signed the pitcher to a two-year contract extension for US$29 million, with a $12-million option for the 2016 season.

Dickey was already signed for US$5.25 million next year.

The Blue Jays also acquired catcher Josh Thole and minor-league catcher Mike Mickeas, while the Mets received catcher John Buck, minor-league right-hander Noah Syndergaard and minor-league outfielder Wuilmer Beccera.

I'm really pulling the Blue Jays to not only make the playoffs this year, but to win it all (even as a pseudo Yankee and Met fan). RA Dickey is one of the good guys in sports. I was really glad to see him have the success he did last year and I hope he can continue with it in Toronto.

It stings to lose him as a pseudo Met fan, but I'm happy he's going to a team that seems to be very serious about becoming a true contender.

The final tally, including backup catcher Josh Thole who was part of the Dickey deal, saw the Jays add eight players to their 25-man roster with three will be in the every day lineup and three in their starting rotation. What an offseason, hopefully this translates to wins on the field.

the jays made a big upgrade with the trade for johnson, buehrle and others, but this is dumb. a 38 yr old whose had one great season after years of sucking and now they're gonna overpay for him to throw a junkball which is the only reason he is in the majors, because he couldn't cut it as a real pitcher the prior 10 years.

if some pitcher has to change to a junkball, he's not good and is only winning by tricking hitters with a pitch that takes no effort or skill to throw. that's not a pitcher imo.

this is not gonna help the jays compared to the move they made earlier this offseason. they have plenty of good/better than average starters that they don't need him.
Wow, look at all these late entries for dumbest post of the year.

Your arguments are ridiculous and you've made a fool of yourself by posting them.

Damn! the Jays are loadin' up. I'm going to have to dust off my Joe Carter jersey.

His knuckleball is sick! It ain't as easy as it looks to throw. I think it is a lost art, and I am glad Dickey is keeping it alive and remaining relevant. He extended his career by changing his approach. I think its a great move.

Red Sox have Steven Wright who'll be in AAA or MLB. Very similar mechanically to Dickey, solid numbers in AA and AAA last year.

Me too. Love his droll delivery.

But, can he go 9 innings if needed, and can he make the pill dance?

Totally impressed by the Jays off season pick ups. Scary! Great staff, scary line-up. My poor Bo Sox have bargained shopped this off season and have guaranteed themselves of another 5th place finish in the A.L. East! Jays haven't made this much noise since the early to mid 90's!
