Johan Santana wins AL Cy Young

Minnesota Twins left-hander Johan Santana has been voted the AL Cy Young award winner, the Baseball Writers Association of America announced Thursday.

Santana was a unanimous choice for the award -- the second time in three years he has won by a unanimous vote.

Sandy Koufax of the Los Angeles Dodgers is the only pitcher to win a Cy Young award three times unanimously, and he did it when it was given to only one pitcher in both leagues.

Santana was listed first on all 28 ballots cast by two writers in each league city to score a perfect 140 points and was the only pitcher listed on every ballot. The left-hander, 27, led the league in ERA (2.77), innings pitched (233 2/3), strikeouts (245) and starts (34). He was tied for first in victories (19) and for the longest winning streak (9 games).

Wow... big shocker here.

Great to see Johan get the award. Deffinately the best pitcher in baseball, and would be even better if he got consistant offensive support. Had a few bumps down the stretch, but overall, his year was incredible.

well deserved! By far the most dominant pitcher in today's game.

I was looking at his last 3 seasons and his numbers are similar to Dwight Goodens first 3 years except Gooden had a better era and it got me to thinking what an asshole Gooden was to snort his career away. Gooden was 58-19 with 744 strikeouts by age 21 and then pissed it all away. It also reminds me of Dennis McLain who was 114-57 at age 25 and threw it all away.
Santana seems to act responsibly so hopefully he'll stay healthy and can post some great numbers the next 10 seasons or so.

I don't know about that. The guy goes back to Venezuela in the offseason. Going to Venezuela isn't exactly the most prudent thing to do.
