Giants trade for Phils OF Hunter Pence

The San Francisco Giants completed a trade Tuesday to acquire outfielder Hunter Pence from the Philadelphia Phillies, a baseball source confirmed to ESPN.com.

The Phillies will receive minor league catcher Tommy Joseph, outfielder Nate Schierholtz and Class A pitcher Seth Rosin in exchange for Pence, according to reports.

Seems like the Giants gave up nothing. Why would the Phillies even do this? Pence is a decent piece that they are just going to have to replace next year.

Schierholtz is a Northern California kid who was getting zip in terms of playing time with the Giants after the emergence of Gregor Blanco and the solid play of Angel Pagan.

Joseph was one of their top catching prospects, but with Buster Posey and Hector Sanchez ahead of him, he was either going to have to go somewhere else to catch or find another position.

I don't know anything about Babin, but I'd say the Phils got some future players for Pence, who has done pretty close to nothing since he got to San Francisco.
