Blue Jays and Marlins Make Big Trade

Its hard to imagine that one trade could turn a team into a serious contender, but thats exactly what just happened.

Apparently a lot of other GMs are pissed at how much the Marlins just gave to Toronto. This trade is so big it will make things a lot more interesting in not only the AL East, but the entire American League.

WOW, the AL East just got even tougher. The Jays are gonna be contenders.

Jeffrey Loria is going to half to sell this team. I guess there are some pretty pissed off people in Florida and Loria is being vilified for gutting this team once again. Not to mention lying to the people who voted and paid for the largely publicly funded new stadium which has poor attendance this year and should only decline even more now.

F*ck sakes. Josh Johnson's agent (Matt Sosnick) making it sound like he doesn't want to play here.

"I feel like there has to be another piece to this trade. I’ve got to imagine that the players that Alex acquired have to be in play– it’s a lot of money he took on in salary in one shot. And there are so many teams that are interested in Josh Johnson that if the Yankees or Texas or some of these teams looking for a frontline starter wanted to give up a tonne, it would seem like it would be against the way that Alex normally does business to not listen and make a trade if he could acquire a bunch of top prospects for one of the players in this deal.”

Nothing Sosnick says makes sense there. Alex (Jays GM Alex Anthopoulos) took on a lot of salary in one shot to make this team a contender right now. Whatever prospects the Yankees or Rangers offer are irrelevant. Anthopoulos has been stock piling young players since he's been here so he could eventually make a trade like this one. Moving one of his important acquisitions for more prospects would be a step backwards.

I think there are one of two things going here. First is a case of the player speaking through the agent. Johnson made it clear to his agent that Toronto wasn't a destination of choice, and now his agent is saying as much, without coming out and directly saying it.

Or

Johnson and his agent are playing a game in an attempt to garner him a contract. He only has this year left on his deal and then he's a free agent. Either they're holding the Jays "hostage" and want a contract extension, or he doesn't think the Jays will be a good team and it will hurt his chances of putting up good numbers and getting him an expensive contract from someone else.

I hope something gets done here. I want Johnson on the team. I want this team to be relevant again.

Last week the Vegas odds for the Jays to win the 2013 World Series were 100-1, today the odds are 15-1.

The trade is "under review".

Apparently NBA commissioner David Stern has called Bud Selig about the trade. I need a rolling-eyes emoticon.

Also, Selig is said to be "unhappy" with the trade and feels bad for all the (2) Marlins fans. But he sees no basis to disallow it. But he's still reviewing it.

The mayor of Miami also wrote a letter to Selig, urging him to veto the trade. But I'm sure he was giddy with excitement when the Heat signed the Big 3.....

I have a feeling Selig will cancel it...

i don't think he will...he approved the dodgers-red sox deal during the season plus from two independent sources outside of baseball the marlins are getting good enough prospects in return.
