2012-13 CHL Players of the Week

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Missouri Mavericks forward Jeff Pierce has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending October 21, 2012.

The Troy, Michigan native was a catalyst in the Maverick’s three point weekend recording six points (three goals and three assists), both games against the Denver Cutthroats. On Friday, the 29-year-old scored a goal with an assist in the Mavs 4-3 overtime loss and on Saturday, Pierce notched two goals (including the game winner) with two assists in Missouri’s 8-5 victory.

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Tulsa Oilers forward Gary Steffes has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending October 28th, 2012.

Steffes and the Oilers had a busy weekend, with three games in less than a 72-hour period. Steffes scored a total of five points with two goals (including one game winner) and three assists which greatly helped his team to earn point in all three games (2-0-1). He also carried a +4 plus/minus in the three games.

The Grand Blanc, Michigan native had a goal and an assist in both Friday’s overtime loss to Quad City and Saturday’s win in Quad City. He finished the weekend off with an assist in Sunday’s win over Fort Worth.

Steffes, 25, is in his third season with the Oilers and his seven points (3-4=7) and +5 plus/minus rating marks the best start in his pro career.

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Bloomington Blaze forward David Gilbert has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending November 4, 2012.

Gilbert and the Blaze are both off to great starts this season as the Chicago Blackhawks draft pick (seventh round, 2009 NHL Draft) has helped the Blaze to a 5-2-0 start and second place in the Berry Conference. The Chateauguay, Quebec native had points in all three games last week for Bloomington finishing with four goals and four assists.

In Friday’s 5-4 win over Quad City, Gilbert finished with a goal and three assists. On Saturday, the 6-2, 200-pound forward had a hat trick in Bloomington’s 6-3 win and then he had an assist in Sunday’s loss to the Mallards.

Gilbert played 28 games in the American Hockey League with Rockford last season posting a goal and four assists. This season, he has 11 points (4-7=11) ranking him fifth in the CHL in scoring.

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Arizona Sundogs forward Kyle Chipchura has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending November 11, 2012.

The veteran forward helped the Sundogs to a perfect 3-0 week with three straight wins over the Denver Cutthroats. Chipchura finished with two goals and six assists and was a +7 over the three contests. He started the week with three assists in a 5-3 win over Denver on Wednesday and then had one helper in Friday’s win and two goals and two assists in Saturday’s victory.

The Westlock, Alberta native leads the Sundogs in scoring with 13 points (2-11=13) and leads the entire CHL with a +11 plus/minus rating.

Chipchura is a veteran of 216 National Hockey League games and last season played 53 games with the Sundogs NHL affiliate, the Phoenix Coyotes, where he scored three goals with 13 assists.

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Fort Worth Brahmas forward Phil Fox has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending November 18, 2012.

The Stillwater, Minnesota native scored the game winning goal in each of the Brahmas two games last week, helping his team win on the road for the first time this season. Fox leads the Brahmas in points (11) and goals (6) and finished last week with a total of three goals and one assist.

In Friday’s win at Rapid City, Fox scored the game deciding goal in the third period helping his team to a 2-1 victory over the Rush. Then on Saturday, the 5-11, 205-pound forward scored two first period goals and assisted on a strike in the third period pushing Fort Worth to a 4-1 win in Denver.

This is the 28-year-old’s second season with the Brahmas, as well as second in the CHL and last year he put together a solid season with 19 goals and 24 assists in 59 games played.

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Wichita Thunder forward R.G. Flath has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending November 25, 2012.

Flath and the Thunder played in four games last week going a perfect 4-0. The Park City, Utah native scored goals in each of the Thunder’s last three games and finished the week with five points (3-2=5). The 5-11, 190-pound forward was a +3 for the week and currently leads the league with a +12 plus/minus rating.

This is the 28-year-old’s second season with the Thunder and he is coming off a solid season that saw him post 23 goals and 16 assists in 42 games last season. Last week’s effort also earned the forward a milestone with his 100th professional assist and he is currently sitting with 93 professional goals.

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Denver Cutthroats forward Brad Smyth has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending December 2, 2012.

The Ottawa, Ontario native produced five points (three goals and two assists) this past week, helping the Cutthroats to two wins in their three games. Smyth has marked points in each of the Cutthroat’s last six games (total of eight points), which currently has him riding the longest point streak in the CHL. The veteran has 11 goals and 12 assists (23 points) so far this season for the expansion Cutthroats.

Smyth has an impressive pro hockey resume, with this year marking his 20th pro season. Smyth played a total of 88 games in the NHL, hitting the ice for the Florida Panthers, Los Angeles Kings, Nashville Predators, New York Rangers, and Ottawa Senators.

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Missouri Mavericks forward Andrew Courtney has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending December 9, 2012.

Courtney, 27, has settled back in with the team he played his rookie season with a year ago. Last week, the Belleville, Ontario native helped the Mavs to four wins with four goals and two assists to go along with a +3 rating. The 6-3, 209-pound forward has goals in each of the last three Missouri games, the longest active goal streak in the league.

An all-star last season and a member of the 2012 CHL All-Rookie Team, Courtney began the season in the ECHL and then joined the Mavericks in early November. The forward was held without a point in his first six games with Missouri (team went 2-4-0) but has six goals and four assists in his last eight games and the team has gone 7-1-0 in those contests.

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Wichita Thunder defenseman Kevin Young has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending December 16, 2012.

Young helped his team to a perfect 3-0 week by scoring goals in each game. He started off his strong three game stretch with a goal and an assist in Friday’s win over Fort Worth. On Saturday, the White Rock, British Columbia native scored the game-tying goal in the second period of his team’s 5-2 victory over Tulsa. The Thunder trailed 2-1 before Young’s strike. Finally on Sunday, the d-man once again scored the game-tying goal with his team trailing 3-2 allowing the Thunder to ultimately extend their win streak to four games with a 4-3 shootout win in Fort Worth.

The 6-2, 195-pounder becomes the first defenseman to win the player of the week award this season. Young currently leads all defensemen in scoring with 24 points (10-14=24) and over his last 13 games has scored six goals with nine assists.

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Allen Americans forward Scotty Howes has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending December 23, 2012.

Howes was activated off the 7-day injured reserve just prior to Allen’s game on Friday night in Missouri and he looked as if he didn’t miss a beat scoring both of Allen’s goals in their 3-2 overtime loss. The second of Howes goals came with an extra attacker and with just over a minute remaining in regulation tying the game and ultimately earning a point for the Americans. On Saturday night, the Toronto native scored two goals again, and added an assist. His second of the night came in overtime of Allen’s 3-2 win over Wichita earning his club the extra point.

On the season, Howes leads the CHL with 19 goals and also leads the league with 10 power play goals. He ranks in the league’s top 10 with 30 points (19-11=30). The 5-11, 190-pound forward has scored goals in 12 of the 19 games he has played this season with the Americans posting a 9-2-1 record in games he lights the lamp.

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Missouri Mavericks forward Sebastien Thinel has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending December 30, 2012.

Thinel helped his team to points in all three of their games last week scoring four goals with five assists to go along with a +2 plus/minus rating. The St. Jerome, Quebec native’s least productive game of the week came on Wednesday in a 4-3 overtime loss in Quad City where he contributed on assist. In his other two games, Thinel had two goals and two assists in each contest which included two goals and an assist in the third period of the Mavs come from behind 5-4 overtime loss in Wichita and the game winning shorthanded goal in the Mavs 5-3 win over Tulsa on Saturday.

Thinel is the first CHL player this season to hit 50 points (15-35=50). The two-time CHL scoring champion leads the league in scoring and is tied for third with his +16 plus/minus rating.

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Arizona Sundogs forward Chad Nehring has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending January 6, 2013.

Nehring has an explosive offensive week scoring six goals and adding three assists in three games. He helped his team to wins in two of the three contests and scored the game winning goal in Monday’s 8-2 victory over Bloomington. Along with scoring the game winner, the Springsdale, Saskatchewan native finished with four scores, the most in a single CHL game this year. He followed that up with two assists in Arizona’s 4-2 win over Bloomington on Friday night and then had a pair of goals in his team’s 6-3 loss to the Blaze on Saturday night.

The 5-11, 195-pound forward has scored seven goals in his last four games and has climbed into a tie for second in the league with 20 goals on the season. Overall he has 34 points (20-14=34), tied for 12th in the league in scoring.

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Fort Worth Brahmas forward John Snowden has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending January 13, 2013.

Snowden has been fantastic since signing with the Brahmas just before Christmas scoring 11 goals with eight assists and a +14 plus/minus rating in 12 games played. During his time in Fort Worth, the team has posted an 8-4-0 record and have moved up to third place in the Berry Conference. Prior to joining the Brahmas, the veteran spent 22 games in Rapid City scoring twice with nine assists (11 points). Collectively, the Everett, Washington native has 13 goals and 17 assists in 34 games played.

Last week, the Brahmas won three of their four games and Snowden scored goals in all four games finishing the week with seven goals (including one game winner) and two assists. His seven scores accounted for 41% of his team’s goals during the week. Snowden scored two goals in three of the four contests and has done so in four of his last five games with a +12 rating over those five games.

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Quad City Mallards forward Mickey Lang has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending January 20, 2013.

Lang finished the week with three goals and four assists along with a +2 plus/minus rating. Most of the Hillsdale, New Jersey native’s damage was done in Saturday night’s 7-1 victory over Denver in front of the Flock’s largest crowd in a decade (9,347). In the game, Lang notched a natural hat trick and assisted on three other Mallards goals finishing the night with six points (3G, 3A). The total is the most in a single game this season and the most since February of last season.

On the season, the second year pro has already eclipsed his numbers from his rookie season with 22 goals and 25 assists in 38 games (had 19 goals and 21 assists in 61 games last season). His 47 points are tied for fourth in the league and his 22 goals are third in the CHL.

GLENDALE, AZ – The Central Hockey League announced today that Wichita Thunder forward Matt Robinson has been named the Oakley Central Hockey League Player of the Week for the period ending January 27, 2013.

After re-signing with the Thunder on January 11, Robinson has picked up right where he left off during the 2011-12 season when he was a league Most Valuable Player finalist. In seven games with the Thunder this season, the Surrey, British Columbia native has five goals and three assists. Last season, he led the team with 34 goals (58 points) including 10 game winning goals.

Last week, the 6-1, 185-pound forward scored four goals with two assists and a +5 plus/minus rating in two games. Robinson also netted the game winning goal in both of the Thunder’s games. In Saturday’s 7-0 win against Denver, Robinson’s even strength goal six minutes into the contest proved to be all his team would need. In another blowout win on Sunday, Robinson scored a hat trick with a pair of assists figuring in on five of the Thunder’s seven goals in their 7-1 win over the Cutthroats.

Robinson began the season in Alaska (ECHL) where he totaled five points (1-4=5) in 17 games.
