Alaska Acquires Corey Syvret from Trenton; Signs Jarred Smith

The Alaska Aces have acquired the rights to defenseman Corey Syvret (pronounced suh-VRET) from the Trenton Titans and signed rookie forward Jarred Smith for the 2012-2013 season, Head Coach Rob Murray announced on Wednesday.

Syvret, 23, is a third-year defenseman who was acquired for future considerations from Trenton. Last year with the Titans, the Millgrove, Ontario native had 10 points (4g, 6a) in 59 games. The 6'2", 200 lbs. Syvret also added 48 penalty minutes. Additionally, he appeared in three games in the American Hockey League for the Portland Pirates. As a rookie in 2010-2011, he appeared in 28 games for the Eastern Conference Champion Kalamazoo Wings. He played in four playoff games that season for the K-Wings, notching a goal and an assist.

Prior to turning pro, Syvret spent five seasons playing junior hockey in the Ontario Hockey League. He opened his OHL career with a season and a half with the London Knights, before joining the Guelph Storm where he finished his junior career on a terrific pace. In three and a half seasons in Guelph, Syvret appeared in 203 games, and registered 86 points (18g, 68a). In 2007 he was drafted by the Florida Panthers in the sixth round (181st overall) of the NHL Entry Draft. He made his pro debut as an amateur in 2010, playing four games with the Rochester Americans of the AHL.

Smith, 24, will make his pro debut with the Aces this fall after a four year career at Brown University. Brown played four seasons with the Bears, appearing in 125 games and totaling 30 points (15g, 15a). The 6'0", 200 lbs. Pepper Pike, OH native was a multiple member of the ECAC Hockey All-Academic Squad in college. Before attending Brown, Smith was a force with the Bridgewater Bandits of the EJHL. In his final two seasons, Brown was a point per game forward with 88 points (43g, 45a) in as many games. His final season in Bridgewater yielded 50 points (25g, 25a) and 47 penalty minutes in 44 games.
