2008-09 Worst Enforcing Team

Nominees

Carolina Hurricanes - 26 fights
Started off ok with Dan Lacouture and Wade Brookbank. As they slowly peeled away the fighters from their team they gave all those Southern fans a good reason to stay away.

Detroit Red Wings - 11 fights
They win. Eleven fights. Most from an early season tease of Darren McCarty and a late season fight of the year by one-game-wonder Aaron Downey. They fought so little that their fights/game in the playoffs is actually higher than their regular season mark. Bad. Plain bad. But in the new NHL is works for them. I'm still waiting for the day when a team realizes they can just run them out of the building when the score gets lopsided. Until that happens, they have no reason to change. Dont blame Detroit--blame the system.

Florida Panthers - 34 fights
Once they got rid of heavyweight Wade Belak there was left over just a bunch of middleweights who couldn't really fight. Another season of mediocrity in every way. How long will hockey stay in South Florida? It's ok Panther fans, as we enter a new decade next year you can take solace that you still had (by far) the nastiest most ridiculous fighting team of the last decade back in 01-02. 117 regular season fights! Unbelievable.

My Pick

Detroit won this the first three years we did it. Then they got an enforcer and played tougher. And they still won (unfairly, but what can I do). I guess that pissed them off and they figured they'd win the award no matter what they did so they went back to carrying no toughness at all. Detroit... in a run-away

Note: I could have added more nominees here but what's the point? We know who will win. I was going to put in Ottawa but left them off the list in deference to Chris Neil.

Previous Winners

2003-04: Detroit Red Wings
2005-06: Detroit Red Wings
2006-07: Detroit Red Wings
2007-08: Detroit Red Wings (for once, this was completely undeserved though)

I'm with both of you. Detroit wins running away.

Detroit and it's not even close. I long for the days of the 01-02 Panthers. 117 regular season fights is unbelievable.

Paul Laus, Peter Worrell, Jason Wiemer and Brad Ference... what a group of fighters!

Amazing that its down to... Greg Campbell, Nick Boynton and Nathan Horton?

Gotta hand it to Detroit. At least Florida had Boynton and Carolina had Gleason, who will never hesitate to step up for their team.

LOL.

This goes to Detroit again. That's the only team you see under "past winners". This team has been weak for a long time.

They are disgusting to watch...

For a stretch late in the season, with Lilja injured and Detroit allergic to dressing anything resembling toughness, the only player in the Red Wings lineup who had received a fighting major all season was...Marian Hossa.

That should say all you need to know to cast your vote.

Carolina had a mix of Brookbank, LaCouture, Conboy, and Gleason throughout the season.

Florida had Belak as their enforcer but now they go to Nick Tarnasky as their toughness and some of their other players can handle themselves like Boynton, Ballard, Allen, Horton, Campbell.

Detroit=LOL
