2007-08 Grimson Award: Best Punching Power/Most Destructive Fighter

No one did anything too spectacular this year as far as punching power is concerned so this is a little bit of a reputation award more than anything

Nominees

Derek Boogaard
Struggled this year with injuries but we know what he is capable of from his past two years in the league. Fighters seem to shy away from trading with him, knowing what might be in store.

Donald Brashear
Still my favorite left in the game, which, when he opens up can be lethal. I still loved that gloved punch with which he sent Shane Hnidy sprawling this spring.

Colton Orr
Orr actually did make some early season contributions to the legend of his right hand. He dropped Jesse Boulerice and Andy Sutton in pre-season games. He also flattened Riley Cote with the first punch of a regular season fight. Cote got up before the linesmen arrived so the outcome was not a TKO win but the power was evident.

George Parros
I'll give Parros a nomination for a two TKO performance this season, dropping Jody Shelley while he was still a Blue Jacket and then nearly decapitating Riley Cote with a wicked uppercut.

My Pick

This is still a category that belongs to no one other than Derek Boogaard or Colton Orr. Boogaard had an off year (though no fault of his own). Colton Orr didn't have as big a power year as the previous two, but still added victims this year so he gets my vote.

Past Winners

2003-04: -
2005-06: Derek Boogaard
2006-07: Derek Boogaard

I'll go with Orr but it's mostly based on reputation... Simon would contend if he was an option

I still think Boogaard is the more powerful fighter, but he didn't get the chance to showcase it as well this year, so I'm going with Orr.

Not a good KO or TKO year for the heavies but I called heads for Colton and tails for Boogy and flipped a coin. Heads finally came up on my fourth flip so I went with Colton.

orr showed a bit more than boogy, although neither was too impressive in terms of tkos and kos.

Cant vote for Boogey this year as he was out the majority of the season with back injuries.

Orr wins this year, but both Boogey and Orr are on top when it comes to punching power.

Colton Orr gets my vote. Boogie just wasn't active enough this season even though it wasn't necessarily his fault.

Colton Orr gets my vote as well.

Overall, I'd say that Derek Boogaard is the biggest and most destructive power puncher in the league, because he is huge and nobody wants to go toe-to-toe with him, but he just wasn't active enough this year. He was hurt for a lot of the year and didn't fight a whole lot. So since this is based on purely this year - it's Colton Orr, who packs a very powerful punch.

Boogaard and Orr are the two hardest punchers in the league.

Even though Parros scored two TKO's this year, I've never thought of him as a power-puncher. It doesn't seem like he packs a very strong punch to me, so I was actually surprised when he put down Cote this season. Just my opinion.

Not casting a vote for this one. No fighter left a wake of destruction, or even had multiple TKO's/KO's.

No real KO specialists this year, somewhat disappointing.

I'l like to give this to Parros because, when provided with balance, he can send a guy's head into orbit, on top of that, he had the best KO this year, but the fact is, the guy is rarely if ever, provided with balance.

This one goes to Boogy if he wasn't injured for a large part of the year, so Orr gets this one, like someone said, because of the rep.

No disrespect to Cote who had a breakout year in the HW division but that punch caught both shoulder pad and the side of his face. I have often wondered what that punch would have done if it lands flush.
