2007-08 Fight of the Year
As I always say, this is the most prestigious award of them all. The best fight of the year!
Nominees Brian McGrattan vs. Colton Orr Oct 13, 2007 Georges Laraque vs. Donald Brashear Oct 20, 2007 Riley Cote vs. Shawn Thornton Oct 27, 2007 Eric Godard vs. D.J. King Nov 25, 2007 Darcy Tucker vs. Jarkko Ruutu Jan 3, 2008 Brad May vs. Krys Barch III Jan 15, 2008 My Pick First off, there are certainly a dozen more fights that could have been nominated and probably half a dozen from Riley Cote alone. But using voting records, these are the cream of the crop. I also added Laraque-Brashear because, although a notch below the others in terms of punch count, this fight was the most debated, controversial, and important fight of the year. It still didn't settle who is the king, but it gave BOTH sides a lot more ammunition in their debates! That being said, my runner up would be Laraque-Brashear because there's nothing better than a super-controversial fight between the two best in the world. Actually there's one thing better: Cote vs. Thornton. I swear I almost thought I saw Kordic and McRae on the back of the jersey's for a second. Previous Winners 2003-04: Chris Simon vs Grant McNeill (Simon vs McNeill Nov 26, 2003) 2005-06: Todd Fedoruk vs Brian McGrattan (Fedoruk vs McGrattan Jan 19, 2006) 2006-07: Eric Godard vs. Derek Boogaard I (Godard vs Boogaard I Jan 9, 2007) Last edited by Merlin401; 04-15-2008 at 08:44 PM. |

My pick will be unpopular but I am a big fan of the heavies throwing bombs. King - Godard was sick and I was going to vote it but then I watched Orr - Mcgrattan again. That was a fXcking mean fight right there. These guys were throwing with a hatred that could be fealt while watching. Going with this one even though I think my favorite player got edged. Thornton - Cote was sick of course and I can't say one bad thing about it.

I gotta give this one to Brad May vs. Krys Barch III. Great toe to toe scrap and neither combatant held anything back, just like all of their great fights this season. Well done guys!

I went with Ruutu/Tucker 'cause that fight just cracked me up. I thought it entertaining on so many different levels.

Wow, those are all VERY good fights.
But I'm going to vote for Riley Cote vs. Shawn Thornton. Wow, that was one heck of a fight! Toe-to-toe all the way. They didn't stop throwing punches. Just unbelievable. And as Smerri mentioned, it happened EARLY in the season, so it really got everyone pumped up about fighting for the whole year, and nobody could stop talking about it. It was that good. Don't forget that round 2 between them was pretty good also. They've had a great "feud" this season, and hopefully it carries into the next. The rest of those fights were very good too. Barch and May had an amazing fighter feud - probably the best in the league, along with Cote/Thornton. Here's how I would rank those 6 fights: 1.) Cote vs. Thornton 2.) Barch vs. May III 3.) Tucker vs. Ruutu 4.) Godard vs. King 5.) McGrattan vs. Orr 6.) Laraque vs. Brashear

You could have had Krys Barch vs. Brad May 3 times in this thread.
Gotta give "Kyle" Barch and May-Day the win.
