2006-07 Schultz Award: Most Old-School Moment
Here it is, the craziest things we witnessed during the 06-07 year that made us think back to the days when seeing anything on the ice at any time was a definite possability. A distinguished group of nominees presents itself:
Nominees Brashear/Capitals brawl against Atlanta Nov 22, 2006 Andy Sutton puts on a high hit late in a win. The Capitals respond. Donald Brashear bloodies Vitaly Vishnevski. John Erskine attacks Marian Hossa. Four straight skirmishes earn a year-best 176 penalty minutes, 5 games of suspension to three players, $40,000 worth of fines to coaches. Good times! Atlanta at Washington Nov 22, 2006 Scott Nichol sucker-punches Jaroslav Spacek Dec 21, 2006 After being ridden into the goal post late in the third period, Scott Nichol took exception and drilled Spacek from behind 'Domi-on-Ulf' style dropping the stunned Sabre. Nichol drew a 9 game suspension for his sneak attack KO. Spacek vs Nichol Dec 21, 2006 Washingon-NY Rangers Dec 30, 2006 This game was old-school throughout. The elder Brendan Shanahan challenges Donald Brashear to settle him down. Brashear thought he was joking but the old man holds his own. Brashear sucker punches Aaron Ward. Colton Orr cross-checks Alexander Ovechkin high to the head in retaliation. It was tit-for-tat warfare that isn't often seen anymore Washington vs NY Rangers Dec 30, 2006 Ray Emery fights twice in wild Buffalo-Ottawa brawl Feb 22, 2007 Chris Neil's high hit bloodies Chris Drury and mayhem ensues. Goons go after stars. The goalies fight. Andrew Peters comes over and fights the goalie for Ray Emery's second fight of the stoppage! The coaches are screaming at one another. Old-school brawling at its finest. Emery vs Biron & Peters Feb 22, 2007 Chris Simon face chops Ryan Hollweg Mar 8, 2007 This was beyond Schultz old-school. More the Rocket Richard, Maki-Green old-school. We've all seen the facial that brought a record-setting suspension and it will go down as one of the NHL's most publicized cheap shots. Rangers vs Islanders Mar 8, 2007 Koci’s 1st game: Mar 10, 2007 The statline will say it all: 2:31 ice time, 4 majors, 3 fights, 42 penalty minutes. Welcome to the NHL David Koci. Koci vs Phoenix Mar 10, 2007 George Parros' Mustache: (all year long!) That handle-bar mustache was just too much. What I wouldnt give to see this guy in Flyer Black and Orange like that. Nothing screamed 70s hockey like that facial hair. Need more old school? Between 11/21 and 2/7 he had fights in 13 of 16 games started. George Parros Mustache My Pick Many worthy entries here. Ray Emery has the heart of an old-schooler though. He could have been the heir to the lineage of Billy Smith-Ron Hextall-Dan Cloutier. Fighting the goalie is rare enough in the new-NHL. Fighting the team's enforcer 5 seconds later is gold. Past Winners 2003-04: - 2005-06: Parker climbs the glass |
I have a hard time labeling the Biron/Emery thing a "fight". It looked like a little kid trying to beat up his older brother. Emery was laughing the whole time, and you could see the fear in Marty's eyes. Biron is very lucky that Emery didn't beat him down. Then, when Biron tripped him while Emery let him up ... the look on Rayzors face is like WTF ? If it was "old school" they would've been throwing bombs like Roy & Osgood.

It feel that is was more old school for Peters to fight Emery than vice versa. That game was totally out of control with the coaches going nuts and all! Def the most old-school moment.

David Koci! When was the last time someone got ejected for 3 fights in one game? That doesn't happen anymore.

stache

I would like to make a write in vote:
When Eric Lindros was being punked by some guy on the Sharks on Barch came in out of nowhere to fight him...that was great :) |
deff going with the emery vs biron and emery vs peters. first of all when goalies fight no matter how many punches thrown its always the most exciting just watching a goalie skate from one ice to the other looking for a fight and then a player just skates over and starts beating down your goalie hahahah. this is deff getting my vote. the only difference between old school and new school is everyone on an old school sens team would have beat the snot outa peters for jumping there goalie

NYR vs Washington for me. From the leader of the team (Shanny) challenging the goon, to Brashear decking a non-fighter for talking trash (Ward), to Orr cheapshotting Ovechkin as retribution for Brash fighting Shanny, it was a game of retaliation and old school mentality.
|
Even though the 'stache was the gift that kept on giving all year, the winner is Koci's first game. I hope he's on the roster next season.
|
I went with the NYR-Washington brawls
|
I'd say Koci first game as you never see a guy having 3 fights in one game anymore. Though Emery's 2 fights and Ottawa vs Buffalo Brawl is a close second.
|
So hard to choose between NYR vs. Wahington and Emery fights 2x. Someone should've came after Biron for two things:
1. Peters went after Emery 2. Biron tripped up Emery after he got his hand handed to him. |
i voted for the brawl simply because we may never see anything like that again. Im glad i got to see it happen live!
|
Koci all the way. He was brought for a reason and exceeded all expectations.
