2006-07 McPhee Award: Best Middleweight/Light Heavyweight

An award for the undersized:

Nominees

Arron Asham
Josh Gratton
Cam Janssen
Travis Moen
Chris Neil
Shawn Thornton

My Pick

Really tough choices here but I still think Janssen gets my vote for his ability to control and wear down even super-heavyweights

Past Winners

03-04: -
05-06: Cam Janssen

This one is hard for me to choose. I don't consider "Light Heavyweight" to be a category of it's own. That being said because the term middleweight is involved I want to vote for Asham. However I'd rank several of those guys (Janssen, Thornton, Gratton and Neil) ahead of Asham as far as fighting ability goes.

Thornton is my choice, but I would have liked to see Tootoo and Clowe on this list as well. Thornton was a monster all year and pounded on nearly all his opponents. Koci was even scared of him.

I don't know if I'd personally rank all those guys in the same class, but I think Janssen takes down the award. He may have a unique style of just taking punches in the beginning, but like he says, he's a real strong finisher. He had some pretty good bouts this year.

Probably a homer pick, but Asham hasn't lost a fight in over three years.

I thought Travis Moen had a great year this past year... From what I recall, he had one loss all season, to Matt Walker - after Walker delivered a huge hip check.

Otherwise, I think he won every fight this year... he'll get my vote.

I don't know if I agree with the selections, but out of all listed the best fighter is Shawn Thornton.

Because Chris Neil is easily about five times the fighter Eager is.

Shawn Thornton gets my vote. He's kinda small, but he's tough as nails. He's the best fighter on that list, and he can hang in there with anyone. I like this guy and he's exciting to watch. I would even consider him a real heavyweight (because size doesn't always matter - this isn't boxing...)

My vote goes to Cam Janssen. He can tear apart any of these guys, and he can hold his own against super heavyweights. (Sorry if I sounded like a homer )

I wouldn't even classify Janssen with these guys, he's a heavyweight. Size doesn't matter...

This category is tough to put into perspective because guyss are all over the place as class goes. I would go with Asham straight up but I believe Shawn Thornton is a better fighter at this point. Now if they were to go at it...thats another story.
