2006-07 Kocur Award: TKO or KO of the Year
Nominees
Derek Boogaard TKOs Todd Fedoruk Oct 27, 2006 Boogaard broke his face with a monsterous right forcing the Fridge to undergo major reconstructive surgery. Boogaard vs Fedoruk Oct 27, 2006 Eric Godard TKOs Derek Boogaard Jan 9, 2007 A highly anticipated matchup that resulted in a highly unanticipated thrashing from Godard. Godard vs Boogaard Jan 9, 2007 Travis Moen KOs Shea Weber Feb 3, 2007 Weber had Moen in trouble with his jersey up over his head until Moen landed a right out of Wichita, Kansas to KO Weber. Moen was as surprised as the rest of us. Moen vs Weber Feb 3, 2007 Ron Petrovicky KOs Kris Newbury Feb 10, 2007 This began a busy month for the stretcher in the NHL. Petrovicky floored Newbury with some right blasters and gave him a bad concussion & a free medical escort from the ice. Petrovicky vs Newbury Feb 10, 2007 Jordin Tootoo KOs Stephane Robidas Mar 17, 2007 Since this was not a sucker punch it gets a nomination here. As Robidas came over to the aid of his teammate, Tootoo wound up and landed a wicked gloved punch that had Robidas out cold. Tootoo vs Robidas Mar 17, 2007 (see 'additional video') Colton Orr KOs Todd Fedoruk Mar 21, 2007 Everyone has seen Colton Orr's wicked right hand that may have put the Fridge out of comission for good. What makes this better is that Orr was sending a message dating back a month, and the protection the Rangers felt with him on the ice led to a 5-0 victory. Orr vs Fedoruk Mar 21, 2007 My Pick Rarely do you have four KOs to choose from in a season. This is called the Kocur award, and I literally had flashbacks to Kocur-Kyte while watching Orr-Fedoruk. Thats my winner. PS, Get well Fridge (if its any consolation, we can give him the Aaron Downey award for most KOs in a season!) Previous Winners 2003-04: Matt Johnson KOs Andrew Peters 2005-06: Derek Boogaard KOs Trevor Gillies Last edited by Merlin401; 04-10-2007 at 12:13 PM. |

Great choices in there...
Obvious homer pick, is the Boogaard-Fridge destruction. But - I will not go that route and go for that incredible Orr-Fedoruk fight. I still cant believe how "out" Fridge went. There are face breaking punches, then there are KO punches like that - and personally, that KO punch from Orr was as grizzly and viscious (sp) as it gets. |

It was a tough choice between Fedoruk-Boogaard and Fedoruk-Orr. They were both great KO's... it's just too bad for Fedoruk that he was on the recieving end of both of them. At the beginning of the year, who would have thought he would be on the receiving end of the top two KO's this year?
However, I voted for Boogaard's KO on Fedoruk. It was the most destructive KO of the year, and that is what changed the Fridge's whole season - not Orr's. After the Boogaard fight, Fedoruk was never the same, and I don't think he ever will be. He's just not a great fighter anymore, and it could have changed his whole career in fighting. It's a shame, but that's what happens sometimes when you're a fighter. You risk having that happen to you every year. Boogaard's KO had the greatest effect out of all of these, and he did the most damage (he broke the guys whole face!) so that's why I voted for it.

I know its a homer pick, but Petro on Newbury.. I think its a bit more impressive to send a guy out a stretcher who HASNT had his face broken twice before. Orr on Fridge was good, but come on now, who really expected Ronald Petrovicky to knock someone out the way he did? That was the highlight of the fighting season for me.

If the award is for the BEST TKO or KO, then it's gotta be Boogard. Not trying to be a homer, but lets face it (no pun intended) Boogard got Fedoruk first. The guy had to have surgery to put it back together. I remember reading an interview with Fedoruk after Orr knocked him and he said something like he was tenative or still shakey from the Boogard fight. Had Orr got him first, then he should win. In my book, anyway.
