2006-07 hockeyfights.com Awards

With another regular season in the books, hockeyfights.com celebrates the fighters and teams that shined during the 2006-07 season. Although the second year of the "new-NHL" didn't have as much fighting as we might like, there still were ample outstanding achievements and defining moments during the year.

A few new wrinkles in our awards tradition have been added, such as the new awards for "Best Fighting Advocate of the Year" given to the member of the hockey community (players/management) that contributed most to the cause of getting the physical side back into the game. Also new is the "Most Under-rated" fighter to honor warriors who often fly under the radar but possess excellent fighting ability, and "Best Mid-Season Fighter Pick-Up."

Since hockey is a game of tradition, we also decided to name some key awards after fighters in history who exemplified the category they represent. For example, the NHL may have its "Hart Trophy" but we will celebrate the "Probert Award" for Best Fighter of the Year. Look for others who we celebrate along with current winners.

So be sure to vote on all winners and come discuss the choices in the forums as well. From toe-to-toe battles, to monsterous KOs, to brutal cheap shots, there was a lot to write home about in 2006-07.

[Note, since the awards do not take into account the playoffs, we will probably add an award at the end for Best Playoff Fight Moment]

How? He's not even really an NHL player yet. He was only a 9-game call-up... the only places he's really qualified enough to be a nominee is in fight of the year or old-school moment categories, and he's in both of those places.

And he had 7 fights in those 9 games, while boring, hacks like Belak only have 9 in the entire season. And don't get me started on McGrattan....

I would have put him in at Most Exciting, and also in the Player Feud poll, with his fights against Josh Gratton. Putting Asham's name in any of these award choices is really reaching IMO...

Don't worry, I'm sure David Koci will be in these awards for years to come.

Great work, as always, Merlin. Thanks for your efforts.

I have a suggestion:

I think, for next year, or this year - whatever you choose - that there should be an award for the best "fighting teammate" or basically a guy that deserves to get recognition for stepping up for teammates on a consistant basis.

Guys like Krys Barch, Matthew Barnaby, Ian Laperriere or Sheldon Souray.

Just a thought as these guys will get very little, if any, recognition for standing up for their teammates.

I would call that the McSorley, O'Reilly, or Semenko award.

Yeah, I'd be happy with any of those titles. I think its a great way to recognize the guys that fought for the right reasons, whether they wanted to or not, against anyone that deserved it.

As we all know, this is becoming very rare...

Not until the Cup is done, so there's still a good while left to vote.

It's a good suggestion. We were considering something like it, as well as a few other awards, but most were sort of shelved for not enough nominees. Still, I think we'll add this one to the list by next season.
