Rochester-Lake Erie in Buffalo

Unfortunately I was not able to make this game, but it looks like 19,000 + were able to make it. Pretty cool. Buffalo wants hockey!!!

Crowd of 19,070 is the eighth-largest crowd in American Hockey League history

The Rochester Americans have set a new franchise attendance record by playing in front of a crowd of 19,070 fans tonight at First Niagara Center in Buffalo, N.Y. versus the Lake Erie Monsters. The record-setting attendance also represents the eighth-largest crowd for a single game in American Hockey League history and the fourth-largest for an AHL game played indoors.

“The American Hockey League has a storied history in Western New York that dates back more than seven decades,” said David Andrews, AHL President and Chief Executive Officer. “Tonight’s turnout in Buffalo is the latest testament to the support that the region’s great fans have given to our league through the years.”

“This record is a result of the tremendous support from the fans throughout Western New York,” said Amerks President Ted Black. “Rochester and Buffalo are both great hockey cities, and the Amerks organization is extremely appreciative of the continuing support of the fans in both markets.”

The previous Amerks record for the largest crowd in the 57-year history of the franchise was 17,898, which was set on Dec. 28, 2004 when the Amerks defeated the Edmonton Roadrunners at the then-HSBC Arena in Buffalo.

What surprised me about the game was the attendance. For the longest time the max capacity of HSBC arena (now called First Niagara) was 18,690. Now it holds 19,070. That's a lot of new seats.

Great showing, shows how much Buffalo cares about their team. There was a recent article in the Buffalo news that said how few people canceled their season tickets for next year. Buffalo wants their real hockey back!
