New York Islanders Official 2008-2009 Thread

Even though its a new thread, Im not expecting to much of the talk to be different. Prove me wrong Garth!

Updated after FA:

So with our current roster, Id say were looking at:

Tamby-Weight-Guerin
Comeau-Comrie-Okposo
Sim-Silli-Hunter
Bergenheim/Jackman- Park-Neilsen or Enforcer (the good option)

Witt-Martinek
Sutton-Streit
Campoli-Meyer

Boy, oh boy, we have alot of work to do...

Tavares, start shopping for a nice house or appt out here!

This team kills me. Good work on the new thread. I'm sure we'll have another year to complain about.

Logans view on the draft.

Good news at the bottom though:

CORRECTION: A headline in Sunday’s Sports section about the possibility of Alexei Yashin returning to the Islanders was incorrect. No Islanders official was quoted in the story about the team’s recent talks with Yashin’s agent.

Well that's a relief.

Looks like we may have McCabe sooner than we thought. Well probably use a guy like Tambellini as trade bait and a d-man like Johnson or Berard.

I agree with you in the other thread IFL, Id rather have Redden also.

According to the Ottawa Sun, the Isles are trying to get Olli Jokinen too.

Hmm. I kinda wanna keep the 5th pick, I don't know how I'd feel about moving down to 7. I think the top 6 is where the real talent is in this draft. Also, Berard is a UFA, and I'm not sure, but I think Johnson is an RFA who I wouldn't be opposed to letting walk.

We definitely cannot afford Jokinen at his current asking price. We'd be left with a team with him and DP, and that's about it. We had the guy when he wasn't good, dealt him, and now he's an impact player. We should be used to that feeling. I'd rather just cut our losses and not f*ck over the team by going after Jokinen.

One of the things I heard was the 5th pick, Johnson and Tamby for McCabe and the 7th pick but i dont know. It really makes no sense either way being that Snow raves about a youth movement then gets a past prime McCabe, either way, I wouldnt complain if we got em. If we got the 7th pick theres still two decent defensemen expected to go 6-8th, Tyler Myers and Colin Teubert. If they dont get McCabe then they go for either Luke Schenn or Filatov, who knows. Filatov already said he wouldnt mind going to the Isles and the guy probably would be a good replacement for Satan in time. Who knows, Filatov/Schenn could be a dud and McCabe could end up being terrible, with the Isles luck Im sure either decision will backfire. I definetly agree on Jokinen.

As far as I understand it, Doughty and Bogosian will probably be the first 2 blueliners to go. But Schenn and Pieterangelo are also supposed to be in that top notch, blue chip prospect category. While Myers and Teubert are supposed to be decent prospects, I just don't think they've got as much to offer. Not worth it.

But you are 100% right with that sentence.

Yeah, from what Ive read, its really between Filatov and Schenn (Pieterangelo if the other sneak up). Being that were desperate for offense Id like Filatov, we lost a sniper in Satan so hed be a good replacement Im sure. If we go for offense in the draft, Snow should go after Redden, Im sure he wouldnt even have a chance at the other guys like Campbell, Stuart, Liles etc.

This is a little excerpt from the Newsday article:

"There's no doubt Tampa Bay is set to select Sarnia center Steve Stamkos No. 1. Three defensemen - Guelph's Drew Doughty, Peterborough's Zach Bogosian and Niagara's Alex Pietrangelo - are considered the consensus picks in the next three spots. But Russian winger Nikita Filatov and Kelowna defenseman Luke Schenn might sneak into the top four and drop Pietrangelo down.

If he stays put, Snow will have his choice of Filatov and either Pietrangelo or Schenn. Snow discounted any worries about Filatov deciding to remain in Russia. If he's not ready to play in the NHL at the age of 18, it's expected he will be drafted by an Ontario Hockey League team to play in major juniors. He's too young to play for an AHL minor-league affiliate"

Even though I totally expect any decision we make to go to the crapper, Filatov looks pretty legit. With our lack of offensive talent, Id expect Snow to go for him if he hangs around till that 5th spot.

Check out this video of him:

scenario 1: Filatov will be drafted by the islanders. will spend a season in b'port and have a decent season. then without warning be traded along with a future pick for someone who's overrated, overpriced and past their prime. that's the feeling i get whenever they have a pick like this, or situation occurs that can better this team.
scenario 2: Filatov is drafted and soon awarded a 10 year, $120 million deal. will be followed with a 5 under-20 goal seasons, that will end up with him getting traded. the next year he will have 40 goals and 50 assists.

is that a bad way to look at things?

While I am not against McCabe and the 7th for the Isles 5th and maybe Tamby, I think we would need something else. Either Toronto throws in another offensive player, or we sign a legit foward to put the puck in the net. We cannot lose Tamby and a shot to draft a sniper, and only have a broken down McCabe and a non blue-chip D prospect to show for it. The thought of Stamos, Lecalvier, and St. Louis together with Boyle is downright scary!
