Retro racing
What racing games, arcade & console, would you say were the great games prior to Gran Turismo? Pole Position and Bump N' Jump are pretty legendary.

The legendary arcade game Death Race. Based on the Roger Corman classic 1975 movie Death Race 2000 (David Carradine, Sylvester Stallone) you race around and fatally knock over pedestrians for points. Parents got the game banned in 1976.

Never played gran turismo because it looked boring.
But Rock N' Roll Racing and Super Mario Kart for the SNES were probably my favorite racing games of all time. To me a racing game isn't interesting unless you can physically attack other vehicles in ways besides just ramming them. The only 'racing simulator' that I played regularly was called F1 Race and it was for gameboy. I didn't have many gameboy games.

I agree RC. I'm not big on racing simulators either (I do like Gran Turismo and Project Gotham Racing though) but I like more of the arcade type ones like a Mario Kart.
Not a racing game, but Twisted Metal 2 is my favorite game where you drive a vehicle.

I like those type of vehicular combat games in general, BattleTanxs for N64 is one that I used to rent fairly often - in the future (2001 haha) a global virus has wiped out pretty much all the chicks on earth, and now there are roving gangs that drive tanks fighting for superiority.

I remember learning how to shoot the freeze stuff in Twisted Metal 2 which allowed the single player to become easier. Minion is still a pain in the ass to beat on the Amazon level though! That game in general just had some neat features like being able to knockdown the the Eiffel Tower and destroying that windmill in the Holland level. It's too bad the series started to get worse once 989 Studios took over the series. Twisted Metal 3 was alright but it didn't have the same feel that 1 and 2 had. I didn't like Twisted Metal 4 at all though. However, Twisted Metal Black on the PS2 was very good and more of a throwback to the first two games.

I loved Sega's attempt to cash in on the popularity of Happy Days with their arcade game The Fonz. Also, Namco's F1, distributed by Atari in America. This projector style game was very loud. Someone aptly described it as like having a UFO land on your head, true say! Both 1976 games. Sega The Fonz Atari/Namco F1 |

Playing as Olaf from the Lost Vikings after you used the 'secret code' was a cool feature, especially since he had 3 points instead of just 2.
