Demo Impressions:

Pros:
Menu is Clean and easy to use.
Music isnt bad.
AI is improved somewhat. Still stupid as hell but not as bad as 12
Much easier to play a neutral zone game. (I love this)
Hitting is more balanced. Still over the top. Much harder to line up open ice hits.
Net battles are less awkward.
Goalies are improved. Less desperation.
Ratings are much better than 12. Toughguys are not rated in 70s. (Hated manually bumping them down.)
Faces are better.
Arenas are better.
Running goalies aint out of control after the whistle.

Mehs:
Presentation "improvements."
Same commentary.
"New" Lighting is wtf. The players are getting more shadowy every season.

Horrible:
That dubsteb rock hybrid song.
Skating. It looks more realistic but my god is it sluggish and unresponsive. Needs some major tweaking. Hard to get a flow going.
They took away the defense strategies on the D-pad.
Fighting is the same stupid first person crap.
Online is going to be figure skater galore.

Final verdict:
Better than 12, not greatly, but some. I know I will be getting it after trading in 12 after a month.

Not only is the fighting engine the exact same but so are the commentators comments. Good lord. The skating is weird at first but will hopefully get easier with practice. I'm gonna wait and hear about any improvements to Be a Pro/GM before I commit to a buy.

Now thats bad news, that fighting engine is horrible:

-suddenly all the players except the two guys are gone from the ice
-goalies shedding the gloves with actually no gloves on in the process
-the punch blocking is just lame
-the antics after the fight are the worst wtf mainly the hand wave saying the opponent was a punching bag

do these people who create it watch the fuking game?

Anyone else considering not getting this game if there's a lockout? My will to play hockey when no hockey is on is very low. I think I might sit this one out if there's no season.

I might. I skipped NHL 2005 afterall.

i feel the opposite, actually. while i'll undoubtedly get it anyway, the lock out would probably make me want it more.

I won't be getting it, I didn't get NHL12 either...it took me a long time to get into NHL11 and I've not touched that for over a year.

I skip every other year, anyway. I'm not paying EA for a roster update. Waiting for NHL 14.

If not for EASHL, I probably would have passed on this year's game as well as last year's.

Last lockout, I didn't get NHL 2005, but that was because I got NHL 2K5 (better game and it was only $20 brand new).
