Current NHL Game PIM Record, Sens vs Flyers 3/5/04

I posted the mastered video of the game that held the NHL PIM record for 23 years, (Bruins-North Stars-2/26/81 –see here), so some members asked me to post the current NHL PIM record game, since the past posted clip links had expired. There’s a number of great fights in this mastered video. With the “New NHL” candyass rules, the current single game PIM record probably will never be broken.

Senators wanted to remain unbeaten against Flyers, in Philly. In the last game, Senators Martin Havalet high-sticked Flyers Mark Recchi hard in the face, receiving a 2 game suspension (his 2nd 2-game suspension for the season). In this game, Flyers wanted to settle the score, on the scoreboard and in the beatdowns department.

Markov scores 10,000th Flyers Goal at 16:10 in 1st period. Flyers join “Original Six”, becoming 7th team in NHL history to score 10,000 goals. Mark Recchi scored his 25th goal in the Flyers game win and also does a good job in the fighting department. Sens Martin Havalet was unfortunately in the penalty box when the brawls erupted.

Game breaks NHL PIM records set by Bruins-North Stars on Feb 26, 1981. There were four line brawls, and a 5th fight, in the last 1:45 mins of the game. After all fights, Flyers had only 7 team players left & Senators 6, with both teams starting goalies ejected.

1st brawl breaks out after Flyers Donald Brashear’s pounds & bloodies Sens Rob Ray’s face. Then all line players get into brawl, with Senators goalie Patrick Lalime skating length of ice to take on Flyers goalie Robert Esche who had joined the brawl in front of his net.

Every time the Officials would get things settled down, and/or have a face-off, another brawl would break out. Officials took almost 90 minutes after the game to sort out penalties, handing out 20 fighting majors, occurring during the final 1:45 mins.

After the game, Flyers GM Bob Clarke was furious and stormed towards Ottawa's dressing room, to confront their coach, Jacques Martin. He was restrained by Flyer officials. Clarke was very upset Martin sent some of his goons out against several non-fighting Flyers.

I definitely remember this brawl since I was there. I have the ticket and penalty breakdown framed in my basement. Brash destroyed Ray to start things off. The only thing noted incorrectly was that Lalime skated to Esche's end and then the goalies went at it. Lalime made a mistake going down there since Esche did him in pretty good. This was the best game I ever attended. It sounded like a playoff atmosphere crowd. Every time the puck dropped, so did gloves and to see Recchi go at was a treat too.

Thanks for the correction, typed it assbackwards.

>>Lalime made a mistake going down there since Esche did him in pretty good

Naw, Lalime did what he was suppose to do when Esche entered the brawl. Win or loss he did the right thing.....gotta stick to "the code".

Some really great fights in this mugfest. What was interesting was several players being thrown to the ice, hard.

Man-o-man did Fisher slam Handzus down on the ice (great 3 point "fireman's carry" wrestling takedown) when Handzus immediately got back up after Fisher knocking him down with a hard right. Good scrap

Thanks, I re-encoded it to take that audio trac clipping out, but still didn't get it out. Oh well, fix it the next time around, along with a couple of typos in it. I have a pretty good amateur video of these brawls, I need to master and put into the video, along with 2 news coverage vid clips.
