Craig Coxe: In Depth

Craig Coxe: In Depth
Quote:
Craig Coxe's reputation as being a great guy to interview stands up real well. He doesn't mince words, is fair and self-critical, has great stories, and has a laugh for almost all of it.

Mike Kole: You only had 40+ NHL fights, unlike Bob Probert with nearly 300, and yet you have a lot of fans still, probably because of your open style. So, you didn't have Probert's fight totals or Joey Kocur's or Chris Nilan's, but you caught the imagination of hockey fight fans.

Craig Coxe: One thing I never did as a fighter was that I would never, ever jump somebody. The way I always felt was, if you're going to get into a fight, let's stand back and see who's tougher. I never agreed to jumping a guy or suckering a guy. I'm going to grab ahold of you, you grab ahold of me and let's see who can hit each other the hardest.

The majority of my fights weren't because I enjoyed it or I was just looking for something to do. It was to help the team. If one of their guys is taking liberties, it's my job to take care of that problem.

Whoa. Great job, Mike Kole and Craig Coxe (and to whoever else was involved in setting up this interview).

Again, like the Wade Belak Q&A, Coxe was brutally honest with his answers. I especially liked his comments regarding John Kordic.

Thanks for another great read.

This was a long term project for Mike. Well worth the wait, and everyone involved did a great job! Very informative.

Many thanks to VodkaFish for posting this transcript. Craig was an excellent interview subject- we talked for 90 minutes, and the time just flew by.

Here's Craig talking about Kordic:
YouTube - Coxe on John Kordic

The thing that struck me is that often when he spoke about his fights, he spoke in the present tense, as though they happened last week.

Interesting.

Probably he didnt know that Kordic seriously hurt guys like Tinordi (i think Tinordi had triple vision after the fight). Kordic wasnt a power puncher, but still he hurt his fair share of opponents.

Now i have to read the whole interview, it looks like it will be a good one.

I hear Coxes Sept 28, '84 preseason battle with Kyte was a great toe 2 toe scrap. I don't know anything more though.

Great interview! I have heard a few Coxe stories from guys who played with him and they all say what a great guy he is and to me that is how hockey players are measured.

Great interview. First goal in SJ history. Always traded 'em.
I'll always remember the Gary Thorne call: "Crowder against Coxe, Coxe has not fought in 2 years. Coxe was put in this line up to take on Crowder. and he's sorry he did"

Kordic probably damaged his fist on Craig's skull, he won that fight handily.....

No questioning Coxe's heart, in 1997 I attended the funeral of Scotty "Psycho" McMichael, who was one of the toughest guys to come out of the east end of Toronto, he was the "enforcer" for the Brooklin Redmen (pro Lacrosse team) for years and was once in the running to be the enforcer for the Flyers (Dave Brown had something to say about that), anyways Coxey and Psycho played in the WHL together and from all reports were great friends, McMichael passed away from cancer in his early 30's it was very sad.....

Anyway I recognized Craig but didnt approach him ( he looked in a fog), after the service I walked down the street to my car and could hear someone sobbing nearby, as I inspected further, there was Craig sitting alone on the step of a strangers house balling his eyes out, it almost brought me to tears and I really wanted to console him but I chose to just leave instead, I'll never forget that, showed me alot, seeing a tough guy cry like that, to me is heartbreaking.

Gotta love Coxey.

I loved Coxe here in Vancouver, win or lose. I remember how bad I felt for him after the Schofield beating. I couldn't believe nobody jumped in to help Coxe.
Outstanding interview!!!
