News and updates.
Ricky Burns turns down Adrien Broner. Priced himself far too high on purpose to avoid the fight. Looks like he'll try and re-entertain the fight offer in spring around May'ish. Apparently he wants one more domestic payday before coming overseas to fight.
Peter Quillin has an opponent: Fernando Guerrero, 25-1 (19 KOs) Lots of rumors out there about Paulie fighting Shane Mosley. As I understand it, Richard Schaefer has got this pegged as the only fight out there for Paulie at the moment. They're looking at a late April show in Brooklyn for the bout. Bernard Hopkins vs. Tavoris Cloud a done deal for 3/9 in Brooklyn. Only thing waiting is the IBF approval of Hopkins as an opponent for Cloud. HBO is all over this as well. Lucas Matthysse vs. Hank Lundy will move to the feature spot on their own card. The undercard will have Selcuk Aydin vs. Jesus Soto-Karass and another fight GBP is working on. Date of the event will be 1/26. They're still working on the venue, which will be in LA or Las Vegas. Kell Brook vs. Devon Alexander has moved to Joe Louis Arena in Detroit on 2/23. Will have K9 vs. Ishe Smith as the undercard, and a 3rd title fight yet to be named. Better be a good fight too, because Brook/Devon and Ishe/K9 sounds just ****ing terrible for action. Rumor has it Julio Jr has fired Freddie Roach as his trainer. Can't wait to see how this unfolds and if true, who he snatches up. British HW prospect David Price has secured Tony Thompson as his next opponent. Fight will be at Echo Arena in Liverpool on 2/23. Nonito Donaire, fresh off his clubbing of Jorge Arce, is expected to take 6 weeks off to recover and recoup after a very hectic last few months of the year. Very well deserved I might add. Expect him back around April. Prospect Thomas Dulorme is expected back to the ring in February or March. No opponents yet, but rest assured it won't be a guy like Abregu again. Froch vs. Kessler is gaining a lot of steam. According to boxingscene, the deal is all but done. According to Twitter, and Calle Sauerland (Mikkel's promoter), the deal has a couple things that need to be done, but it's mighty close. Fight will be in England somewhere, which is one of the hangups. The WBA has ordered Alexander Povetkin to fight Wlad by March next year. We'll see what kind of excuse comes up from Povetkin to avoid it this time. WBO 175lb champ Nathan Cleverly has secured a fight with his mandatory, Robin Krasniqi via purse bid, with the fight scheduled to take place March 16th. Details will be announced before long. Richard Abril is out as Adrien Broner's next opponent. He dropped from that fight to take on his mandatory, Sharif Bogere, for the WBA LW title. Last, but not least, in the wake of Manny's KO loss, his prospective opponent, Brandon Rios will have to seek green pastures elsewhere for the time being, and it looks like they're going back to the Mile High well as a rematch with Mike Alvarado is just about secured. They're looking at March at Staples Center in LA.

Alrighty, here is your weekend preview for NBCs Fight Night in Bethlehem PA.
-Tomasz Adamek (47-2, 29 KOs) vs. Steve Cunningham (25-4, 12 KOs) II - 12 rounds, heavyweights -Tor Hamer (19-1, 12 KOs) vs. Vyacheslav Glazkov (13-0, 9 KOs) - 8 rounds, heavyweights *Adamek vs. Cunningham* This was a fight of the year candidate years ago, and these two finally meet up again after 4 years with Adamek taking the first fight via split nod. They've kinda went in opposite directions since then. Cunningham became CW champ again, but really started to show his age while winning a cuts stoppage over Troy Ross where he was lucky the fight was stopped, and then having current champ YPH take him apart for 12 rounds. Adamek, went up to HW, and aside from his one shot at Vitali, has been one of the best HWs going. USS stated he was not himself and looked to blow Adamek out of the water last time out, and it led to him not boxing well. IMO, if you go to destroy a guy, and land as many clean shots as Cunningham did and don't take a guy out - you've got issues. Adamek, showed no issues taking his shots, delivered some knee buckling shots and has since rattled off KO wins in the big division. He's also showing even more advancement in his boxing skills while USS has stalled out. I'll take Adamek again, via UD. *Hamer vs. Glazkov* Lots of people are high on Hamer, but I'm thinking it's just that desire for an American HW. After the shocking loss to Kelvin Price a few years back, he seemed to re-dedicate himself to the gym, went to the UK and won the Prizefighter tourny, then has returned to continue the comeback path. His assignment, Vyacheslav Glazkov, the bronze medal winner in 2008, silver medalist in the world amateurs, and a hell of a complete fighter. I've watched a bit of his fights on Youtube, and he you can see the typical Eastern Euro style, but he's got a hell of a lot more power behind it. This is really a toss up fight. In the upset, I'm taking Glazkov via decision. He's fought tougher opposition and has a style that should be very tough for Hamer to match with.

Quick recap..
Glazkov RTD4 over Hamer. It was never close. Glazkov simply hammered Hamer over 4, and was clearly a step and punch ahead of him at every turn. Tor, sensing it was over, and not having a chance, simply quit on his stool and didn't take the ring for the 5th. Might as well call it a career now, or go back to the UK and take part in another Prize Fighter. Adamek SD12 over Cunningham USS won this fight. It's as simple as that. I had it 116-112 for Adamek, and not a single boxing person I follow or converse with on Twitter had the fight even a draw. Cunningham outboxed Adamek and did it rather easily. Adamek came on late knowing he needed the KO, but came up empty. The beating Vitali gave him has clearly wrecked Adamek. He has been brutal in every fight since, and this is another notch. I really hope he doesn't get in front of Kubrat Pulev for another title shot, because Wlad will retire him on the spot.

As we close out the year, here are 50 things we learned from 2012.
50. Chad Dawson isn't "Bad," anymore. 49. Deontay Wilder can hit hard... like really hard. 48. Robert Guerrero has a hell of a set of whiskers, even while moving up 2 weight classes. 47. Vanes and Lara are both not marquee fighters. 46. It is possible to have awful decisions outside of Texas, coughManny-Timmycough. 45. Lucian Bute was all hype. 44. The Klitschko's are good, no matter the opponent in this day and age. 43. Freddie Roach may not be as good a trainer as we thought. 42. Knocking Sergio Martinez down usually results in a lot of pain for you. 41. Erik Morales is old. 40. Abner Mares is scary good at a scary young age. 39. Seth Mitchell has a lot of work to do. 38. It is possible to win a decision in Germany against Felix Sturm - thanks Daniel Geale. 37. Gennady Golovkin punches hard, very hard. 36. Against a certain opponent, Hopkins can still win fights at nearly 50. 35. Chris John is still a *****. 34. Gabriel Rosado is the real deal. 33. Bryant Jennings is the real deal. 32. Antonio Tarver is a cheater... for how long, we don't know. 31. Leo Santa Cruz is a monster. 30. Nonito Donaire has a devastating left hook, like the best in the business. 29. Julio Jr can break down most middle weights. 28. Tomasz Adamek is damaged goods thanks to Vitali. 27. Victor Ortiz and Andre Berto will be fun against anyone they fight. 26. Danny Garcia has arrived. 25. Peter Quillin has arrived. 24. Adrien Broner is going to be a god damn force. 23. Lucas Matthysse is a machine. 22. Canelo can get a pass against any opponent, even one two divisions south. 21. Alexander Povetkin is a farce. 20. Brandon Rios and Mike Alvarado are crazy. 19. Erik Morales is so old it's not funny anymore to see him in the ring. 18. Barclays is a sick venue for boxing. 17. The difference in world class level and regional level is big. Ask Ajose Olusegun, Grzegorz Proksa and Vyacheslav Senchenko. 16. Eric Morel is old. 15. Zab Judah can still win... just not on the grand level. 14. Mikey Garcia has a very bright future. 13. You can circumvent prospect status if you have a Al Haymon as a manager, just ask Keith Thurman. 12. Ricky Hatton is old. 11. Mikkel Kessler is back. 10. Alfredo Angulo is back, and can still be hit with every punch imaginable. 9. Randall Bailey can and cannot land a single punch to win a fight. 8. Sergio Martinez is the best MW in the world. 7. Gabriel Campillo gets robbed on an anual basis in title fights. 6. Dereck Chisora is a joke. 5. The RING has sold themselves out completely. 4. Kelly Pavlik is back... until he gets in the ring with Andre Ward. 3. Austin Trout has arrived. 2. Floyd Mayweather is the best P4P. 1. Marquez has Manny's number, and finally got his redemption. Tomorrow we'll go over the fighter of the year candidates, then round of the year, and KO of the year.

Alrighty... fighter of the year candidates.
1. Nonito Donaire Body of work: -SD 12 over Wilfredo Vazquez Jr -UD 12 over Jeffrey Mathebula -TKO 9 over Toshiaki Nishioka -KO3 over Jorge Arce Donaire simply dominated his opposition. He knocked all 4 opponents down, stopped two of them, and aside from a Texas scoring against Vazquez, was simply dominant against all comers. He proved his dominance against top level opposition as each one of his opponents was ranked in the top 10 by Boxrec, the Ring or ESPN. 2. Danny Garcia Body of work: -UD 12 over Erik Morales -TKO 4 over Amir Khan -KO 4 over Erik Morales Danny exploded on the scene not with the first win over Morales, but when he took the Khan fight on short notice, was a massive underdog, got busted up early, and then landed one punch that shook the boxing world - and sent Khan's career into rebuild mode again. He didn't stop there, letting El Terrible have his rematch, only to retire the Mexican legend with a massive left hook. 3. Leo Santa Cruz Body of work: -RTD 4 over Alejandro Hernandez -Shut out UD 12 over Vusi Malinga -RTD 5 over Eric Morel -TKO 9 over Victor Zaleta -UD 12 over Alberto Guevara No other titlist fought as much as Leo. No other boxer through as many punches either. Averaging well over a 1000 each time out, this little whirl wind of lefts and rights snagged a vacant title against the favored Vusi Malinga by systematically wearing him down with body punching. He then retired the veteran war horse Eric Morel with a punishing display, and capped the year by going to war with two Mexican contenders. HM: Robert Guerrero, Juan Manuel Marquez, and Brian Viloria The winner: Nonito Donaire. The body of work, against top level opposition each time out, and the results he created are just far greater than anyone else this year. Tomorrow, we'll dig into everyone's favorite.. KO of the year.

Worse yet... the shoulder requires surgery for Ward. He has scrapped the Pavlik fight entirely. Expect him out until May/June.

Quote:
I watched your boy Troy Ross this year in his 2nd career title shot against one of the best in the world, and I was rooting for him the entire way (and thought he was jobbed). If you see Troy, tell him to get back in the ring and get a working towards another shot. He's too good to not have a belt before he hangs his gloves up.

I'll get KO of the year done a little later today. We're having issues with YT and our work filter, again.
In other news, a deal has been reached for Adrien Broner's next opponent, it'll be Gavin Rees (37-1-1, 18 KOs) from the UK. Rees has been a titlist before, but then lost his belt in his first defense via KO to light punching Andriy Kotelnyk. He's since rebuilt winning the Prize Fighter tourny, and some regional titles in the UK. Sorry to say, but I don't give Gavin a whole lot of a chance. He's good as a regional fighter, but stepping up to the big level is something he won't be able to do. I'll take Broner via KO around round 5. It could be competitive if Rees stays far beyond discipline and stays on the outside, but, I think we'll see Broner find a way to get to him. **UPDATED NEWS** Hank Lundy has dropped from the fight with Lucas Matthysse. He's having a managerial split take place, and his managers will not allow him to fight until its settled. Stepping in, ESPN FNF regular Mike Dallas Jr (19-2-1, 8 KOs). Dallas has been on a roll this year, after everyone thought 2011 was going to be a banner year... until Josesito Lopez derailed that with a thrilling KO. It's great to see him get a shot. But, he's picked the wrong guy at the wrong time. I'll take the Argentine bomber in the middle rounds.
