Either way, per boxingnews and BoxRec, its all set for Mitchell/Banks on 9/15 on the Canelo card. Strangely, I haven't seen **** in regards to undercard bouts for the Sergio/Julio card. Sampson Lewkowicz has said he has a "major announcement" coming later today in regards to the card... wonder what he's got a cooking? Good article at BS that helps clear this mess up, as far as HBO, Showtime and GB: http://www.boxingscene.com/schaefer-...ionship--54915

Good morning fellas.
Here's the weekend preview to what should be a great weekend of boxing, starting with tonight's wonderful ESPN FNF card in Chicago. I was hoping to road trip to this, but work said no when I asked for the day off... ****ers. ESPN FNF: -Glen Johnson vs. Andrej Fonfara The Road Warrior takes step down in competition and pay to get a win, build some confidence, and see if he's still got it. Fonfara, I've seen in person one time, stopping a gym rival in Phil Williams. He looked pretty solid, never stops coming forward, but lacks true power. He relies on breaking guys down over one shot power, which is great and fun for club fighters... but this is Glen Johnson who doesn't wear down and doesn't stop. Hell, dropping Glen is hard enough, actually stopping him seems damn near impossible. I'll take Johnson via TKO in the mid later rounds. They both come forward, but Glen throws with more power and can put his punches together better. -Jose Louis Castillo vs. Ivan Popoca The biggest shocker was seeing JLC weigh in below the limit. First time he's made weight in **** if I know. This has war, fight of the year written all over it. Do NOT miss this fight. Popoca has been in there with decent talent, both Jesus Soto Karass who he stopped in 5 and losing an 8 round war to Ruslan Provodnikov via TKO on ESPN. At age 38, how much does Castillo have left in the tank? That's the biggest question. And while Popoca is tailor made for him, he's also tailor made to prove he doesn't got enough left. I'll take 30 year old Popoca over the 38 year old via TKO on cuts late in the fight. Saturday: England (EPIX.com) -David Haye vs. Derek Chisora The grudge match that has sold 30K tickets in the UK for the fight, that's not even technically sanctioned. Love it. Haye weighed in at 210lbs, showing he's not been inactive in retirement. While Chisora weighed in VERY heavy at over 245. With Chisora coming straight ahead, and Haye's skills, I'll take Haye in this fight. I don't think it'll be nearly as action packed as most think. I think Haye will box Chisora and pot shot him quite easily. So, in the end, Haye via UD. HBO at Las Vegas: -Amir Khan vs. Danny Garcia This has now been billed as a unification bout, as the WBA has reestablished Amir Khan as it's champ at 140. And justly so given Lamont Peterson testing positive for roids. Also on the line, will be the RING title. The best title there is available, IMO. Amir Khan has had a hell of a training camp for this one, training over 5 months given he was supposed to fight Peterson. Garcia, coming off a very good performance against faded Erik Morales, will be tested like no other time in his career with the hand speed, power and boxing abilities of Khan. I like the fight, I think it'll be action packed, I see Khan winning rounds 1-4, and if he doesn't get Garcia out of there in that time, may take the next few off to re-energize, and then finish off strong for a change. I'll take Khan via UD.

I'll recap things officially on Monday, but here's the end to the Haye/Chisora grudge match in England.
This was the best I've ever seen David Haye look, in a 5 round thrashing of Chisora.

I had Haye 39 - Chisora 37, before the fifth. I did think that Chisora may outfight Haye, but Haye outclassed him.. good win in the end and I think Chisora knew it.
Interesting to see if Haye goes back into retirement with them belts or whether he continues on. My last buck goes on the latter..

Garcia pulled out a spectacular upset last night catching Khan in the 4th round with a huge left hook dropping him and hurting him badly then finishing him off in the next round. Khan was very aggressive and was giving Garcia a whooping up until the third round. In the third Garcia was doing better still losing the round but changed the course of the fight by destroying Khan with a big left hook, dropping him to the canvas. Garcia came out in the 4th and put Khan down again early in the round. Khan got up and with stood some good bombs from Garcia and came back landing some good shots of his own even though he looked to be all but out on his feet providing very high drama. But Garcia caught him with thirty seconds left in the round and put him down again. Khan got up and was clearly hurt but I believe the fight should've been aloud to continue though the referee decided to stop it. I know fighter safety is the top priority in boxing but I miss the days when a guy had to be completely finished for the fight to be stopped. Not to say Khan would've likely been able to comeback in the fight but you never know in boxing and I believe fights being stopped early takes away from the drama of certain fights and I've noticed over the passed few years they seemed to stop fights a lot quicker then before. Sometimes when I'm watching some of the classic fights I think wow, this fight would've been stopped about 10 times if it was now and days. None the less a great upset victory for Garcia and a crushing defeat for Khan.

For those that missed Garcia vs. Khan, here's the full, explosive, action packed 4 rounds:

Great fight between Khan/Garcia.A star is born and a promising career is now a little sidetracked.I want to say one thing.Thank goodness for Manny Stewart for being at the announcers table.Because if Khan would have went up to the ropes and pulled his sausage out.Lampley and Kellerman would have fought over who got it first. If it wasn't for Manny no one would have known Garcia was even fighting until he dropped the hammer with a nice left that landed on the upper jaw/ear area, and changed the fight in a snap.Khan once again threw the game plan out the window and decides to slug it out.Garcia was more than happy to oblige.Even though Khan got the better of Garcia early.Garcia was still countering. He went to the body, and basically did his thing.Khan didn't hurt him,but drew blood which I thought was a headbutt, but not sure if they made an official ruling. But that punch took Khan's legs and he never got them back.I thought Kenny Bayless stopped it a little early. That really wasn't that hard of a knockdown like the first one.I mean it looked like Khan was more with it than the first one.Anyways.great showing by Garcia who has now opened many doors for himself.Good for him.He seems like a good kid who puts on good fights..can't wait to watch him fight again...

First and foremost, a shout out and a well wish for one of boxing's classiest, throw back kind of fighters, Glen Johnson. The Road Warrior has called it a career. He's fought everyone relevant in the last 15 years, held some titles, but above all, was a class act that fought anyone-anywhere and was the victim of a lot of bad decisions. But, he never bitched to the media about scandal or anything. He just fought again. Lots of guys have come out and said he's the toughest guy (or one of the toughest) they've ever fought - Tavoris Cloud, Bernard Hopkins, Antonio Tarver and Clinton Woods. One thing is for sure, when you had Glen Johnson as an opponent, you were going to be in for the fight of your life. After 19 years, the Road Warrior has called it a career.
The recap: ESPN FNF- Jose Luis Castillo RTD8 over Ivan Popoca Castillo weighed in at 146, making weight for the first time for a fight in seemingly ever. He then proceeded to batter youngster Ivan Popoca to the point where both eyes were horrendously cut, and it forced a referee stoppage. This was a ****ing war, up until Castillo broke his left hand. Popoca was so gun shy from the bombs he ate through 3 rounds, that he simply wouldn't stay orthodox and remained lefty to stay away from the left hook - while effective in that regard, nobody told him that Castillo broke his left after 4 and he could switch back with no issues. In the end, the ref stops it after 8 rounds, not allowing Popoca to come out for 9. I knew this would be a cuts stoppage, just the wrong guy. Andrzej Fonfara UD10 over Glen Johnson This was yet another action packed, give take affair. Both guys battered each other with monster power shots, both to the body and the head. The best part, it was give take with combo punching. It wasn't just a right here and there, it was a 1-2-3-4 give - take 1-2-3. Just a great fight. Fonfara got the win of his career, and showed that Johnson, while game for a fight, just doesn't have the top notch sauce anymore, taking down the former champ via UD over 10 rounds. License to Thrill - UK HW Spectacle David Haye TKO 5 over Dereck Chisora I said it before, this was the best I've ever seen David Haye as a HW. He came in only 10lbs above the cruiserweight limit, giving up nearly 40lbs to DelBoy. The result, he boxed Chisora masterfully. He was in and out, landing hard combos, tied up when he had to, and easily picked apart Chisora. I knew Haye would box him very well, and very easily, I didn't think it'd be "that" easy though, as Chisora only landed 5 or 6 flush-noteworthy punches on Haye in the fight. In the end, Haye blasted away, dropping Chisora hard in the 5th, and then finishing him - with a masterful combo as posted earlier. A side note: Chisora is a game fighter. But, lets be frank and real, he's not a good one and isn't remotely near the top 10 in any sanctioning body, boxrec, or the RING. He has very little boxing skills, can't throw a straight punch to save his life, and the only reason he has any sort of following - or press - is that he didn't get KO'ed against a one armed Vitali. Haye, IMO, did something he should have done, and that's beat this soup can into oblivion. The thought of Vitali or Wlad ducking him because he knocked out a robotic, come forward with no straight punches-overhand punching can is a joke. Remember, Haye had nothing but time to make the fight with Vitali, but grossly overstated his value and backed out of his fight with both Klitschko's years ago. I don't like Manuel Charr as Vitali's possible swan song opponent, but I also understand the guy has a contract signed for the fight, and that's Vitali's next opponent. What was Vitali supposed to do with Haye constantly saying no and avoiding the fight? Just retire or look for another opponent while the "best"available keeps saying no? Don't let the media try and swoon you with this Vitali ducking nonsense. HBO at Mandalay: Danny Garcia TKO4 over Amir Khan 140lb division - meet Danny Garcia. World, meet Danny Garcia. Danny picked up the RING title, which is more prestigious than winning the WBA and having the WBC. Why? Because either body can strip him, or make him a champion of something else at the snap of a finger. Rest assured, if a Mexican - say Juan Manuel Marquez or Antonio DeMarco - want to fight for it, Jose Suliaman will do what he did to Sergio Martinez and Tim Bradley, and strip Garcia for no reason. Anyway, back to the fight, Garcia in those exchanges did what he had to... punch when Khan punches. The result, Khan goes for a hooker-cut, and is caught hard just below the ear. Great patience by Garcia to not punch himself out, pick his shots, and dig to the body and head to get Khan out of there. Amir, to his credit, fought with such heart in the 4th it's amazing. No legs at all, and a few times, landed some bombs on Garcia to momentarily stop him, but in the end Danny just kept coming and forced Kenny Bayless to stop the fight. Wadubbin - you are correct. The cock lapping going on by Max and Lampley for Khan was just awful. Garcia was landing good, solid, shots through those exchanges and only Manny caught them. I get it, Khan is a great young talent and everything, but lets bia a little objective about who's fighting. Ya know, that professional thing.

Quite a bit of news and notes to hit:
-Marcos Maidana is done with the Jr Welter division, moving up to 147. His first opponent, Jesus Soto Karass. Fight will be on the Lopez/Canelo fight in September. -There is still no word from the IBF on what they plan to do with Lamont Peterson and his drug issues. Their title has sat idle for 7 months now, and Zab Judah, their #1, is going to push for Danny Garcia at the Barclays opener in Brooklyn. They'd better make a ruling quick... -Gennady Golovkin will fight either Grzegorz Proksa or Vanes Martirosyan in August. I'm leaning towards it being Proksa, because Vanes would be going up in weight, and well, who can trust Vanes for a fight? -Danny Garcia now has 7 days to decide what title to keep between the WBA or the WBC. Because the WBC is a piece of **** and doesn't want their title unified, they will not allow their champion to hold their title and another. So, Danny must choose which he wants. Hopefully, he keeps the WBA and drops the retarded WBC. -Abner Mares appears destined for the Canelo/Lopez card as well. GB is really going after this date hard. While their headliner is a joke, the card is becoming stacked! -Keith Thurman, who was supposed to fight Maidana come this weekend, will now get Orlando Lora. This is a big exposure fight for Thurman, considering he has Al Haymon backing him... so expect to hear this name a lot. -Thomas Oosthuizen is back in action 8/2 at the Roseland Ballroom for the vacant IBO super middie title, against Rowland Bryant. A good solid fight. -Amir Khan has said the move up to 147 is yet again on hold, looks like he might pursue a rematch with Danny first at 140.

Jkidd,
Paulie, was promised the opener at Barclays as the headliner. A possible Judah vs. Garcia fight is no second act. Judah was all over twitter begging for a Garcia fight in A.C. From what Richard Schaffer has been saying, expect Danny to fight a GBP fighter. Possibly getting Ajose O. vs. Mathysse and the winner fighting Garcia. I think Lucas is the best in the division, but I will never doubt Danny G. again. Being from Philly I knew about Garcia about 6-7 years ago when I was training in NE Philly. His gym is Harrowgates which is in a rough part Kensington. Harrowgates has one of those proud Philly fighters gym persona. There are no easy days and you earn everything you get. Garcia basically fights the same way he has always faught. Nothing spectacular looking, but continues to get the job done and wins. For as young as he is, he is very composed in the ring. His dad may be a mouth peice, but he gave him some perfect advise after the second round of the Khan fight. He told Danny to step to the left and throw the hook. It worked. Danny does nothing spectacular but everything well, with one exception. He has an uncanny ability to punch with opponents and land hard. Thats how KO's happen. Its hard to KO someone when their guard is up, but Garcia throws with his opponents. He also has a solid chin. There are still a lot of opponents that would be favored, but I'd be surprise if he ever was a 7-1 dog again. Garcia's father beleives that Danny's true weight is 147 and that he would do fine there as well. Who knows? He looks good and solid at 140 and should defend his ring belt there for a little. The 147 though comes from the Pennsylvania Commission's rule of same day weigh in's. It's one of the biggest reason's why Philly's (a great Boxing City) ability to get big time fights, when all surrounding states have a pre-day weigh-in rule. Garcia had the task of weighing and fighting at the same weight throughout amatuers. Judah - Garcia at Boardwalk hall would be nice and the one thats availible. Other fighters in the division are either unavailible or are with TR, but don't sleep on Robert Guerrero's name if he wins his fight on July 28th. He could always come back down to 140.

Like you, I'll never doubt Danny again.
I may see him as an underdog or I may not favor him to win a fight all the time, in the future, but the kid is no joke. I'll say this as well, as you allude to, his timing to punch is incredible. His ability to exchange is absolutely perfect. He has a solid chin, and showed it taking Khan's best, Morales's best, and Holt's best. But the timing is what really got me in this fight. Even in rounds 1-2, he was landing inside the exchanges. And as the 3rd opened, Manny made comment that he was sitting down and really getting his rhythm, and moments later - Khan is on his ass. The division is loaded. And whether he stays at 140 or goes to 147, he's got unbelievably tough fights. Especially at 140 where he is now THE TARGET of everyone else. -Ajose Olusegun is his mandatory from the WBC. -The IBF title is the strange one, that I can see him fighting Judah for. Remember, when Danny beat Kendall Holt, that was an IBF eliminator fight. And when Zab beat Vernon Paris (as comical as it is that Paris would be in an eliminator), that was an eliminator. The IBF needs to sort out it's mess in a hurry, because the time is ripe for Judah vs. Garcia. -The WBA is all messed up. Maidana holds one of it's titles, but is moving up again, so he should be removed. Johan Perez is the #1 contender and their interim champ (whatever that means considering they've got 3 champs already), yet hasn't beaten anyone of note but has Pablo Cano this coming weekend in Mexico. -Zab Judah will likely supplant Amir Khan in the RING ratings to be the new #1 there. A lot will depend on what he does with the titles. Vacate the WBC or the WBA, either way, I'm all game for a fight against Zab, Matthysse or Ajose - anywhere.

And one thing just revealed, Victor Ortiz has dropped Danny Garcia as trainer.
No word on a replacement, nor do I expect one anytime soon given Victor needing another couple months to recover. But, that's a huge story in itself given everything they've done and been through together.
